The guy has the devRant sticker on his laptop, so likely people at his office have seen his laptop and the sticker, and know what his face looks like. Connecting that to a specific username is a completely different issue. No one in this thread knows what his username is and if he's using his real name as his username, he would be aware of the risks of publicly badmouthing his company.

I agree with @trogus. The privacy concern is being overblown here IMO.

If you have devRant stickers on your laptop and you're publicly speaking at an event then people might try to look you up by your name. The simple fact is you don't make your username your real name if you're worried about people finding you. That would be silly.

And there's also no evidence that he's even on devRant let alone confirming username.

@GigabyteDX No, why? It is MY choice to expose myself, not yours. This is a very serious difference. This is the reason why this is different from reddit and 4chan.
This is a moral question. People can loose their jobs, especially in US, when they get exposed here, and companies already started to notice devrant. It is absolutely crucial to not expose people who rant here, as their lives stability might depend on their income. And yes, ofcourse they could stop ranting, but this doesnt solve the basic problem. For the OP, what you have done is illegal in many countries, as the person in it has the right to decide for what his image can be used. I urge @dfox to react on this, and decide this on EULA level.

Literally right now this rant is "some guy had a devRant sticker displayed on his laptop and he may or may not even use devRant"

I'm all for defending people's privacy, but honestly, in this case I find it a bit belittling to the person in the photo. Ex. The assuming he's not smart enough to put two and two together that if he shows a devRant sticker on his laptop that people might think he uses devRant.

@vortexman100 you are complaining about something that isnt a problem. If he is using a name that cannot identify him then he cant be identified. Simple as that and its not hard to do. Its your responsibility to be careful in how conduct yourself online not others. If he can be identified, dont be mad at whoever did it. You are getting angry for the sake of getting angry. I would personally never post anything online that I wouldn't want anyone (employers family ect) to see and if I did i would make sure as hell I could be identified. Not just my display name but the information in my content as well.

@dfox Yes, i know that. But someone might someday compromise a fellow ranters anonymity, and therefore a rule has to be established, because many people here rant about their coworkers or jobs.

@vortexman100 and we wouldn't allow that. Posting someone's identity who hasn't made it publicly known wouldn't be acceptable.

We also wouldn't allow someone to say so-and-so user's real name is "whatever". The policy is don't try to post someone's identity or name if they aren't trying to make that info public. That's not OK.

This case simply isn't that. This is a case of someone advertising devRant in public in a public setting where the assumption should be if your username is identical to your name then someone might search it and find you. Extremely different from someone maliciously trying to expose another user who wanted to remain private.

Using a laptop with devrant sticker in public gives the chance of someone recognizing devrant and share it. If you dont want your boss to know about your devrant then dont show it in public.

No one here shared any private data. Just a picture of a guy who is doing a presentation in public.

Eh... This is a huge necrobump, I know but I would like to say that I understand (at)vortexman100 's concerns. If you get your face here on devRant and your employers finds it, he will know what your account is. And if he knows your account, he knows how you talk of him, and your position. You could even be reported to him by someone who recognizes you on here.

And I'll add that it's even more true if you speak on mic at an AI conference like this. People could all of a sudden link your real name, maybe location, face and username together. Saying "look another devRant user" is fine, responding "Hey I know this guy, he's johnDoe on here!" is, in my opinion, a violation of the right to have an online identity dissociated from your IRL one.
