It's an encrypted communications platform that allows you to chat, message, and transfer files without the fear of data collection or surveillance.

@lquessenberry that's a lie. If there's someone who is about 5-10 years ahead in tech, it's the secret services...

@lquessenberry that's what protonmail said, but you can now see the consequences.

@paradonym That's fine if you think that, but nevertheless, it's a solid alternative to Whatsapp and Telegram at the very least. It is a very good application. I suggest trying it out for yourselves and creating your own community hub with it. There's nothing to lose. It's a pretty solid app.

@sam9669 I suppose I have been under a rock. What were the consequences?

@iam13islucky @byte @TRiGGER80 do you know the mail service Edward Snowden used? Lavabit? It was shut down by the NSA using a national security letter after Snowden "blowed the whistle".
It's an email service trying to minimize metadata and is up and running again. In the meantime similar services have been created for users who don't trust Lavabit after the NSA got an eye on it. One of the services is Protonmail. Which uses OpenPGP where possible and gives the option to host the mails encrypted on their servers and sending the recipient only a link to that hosted text. This is for users who aren't familiar with OpenPGP.

Using your own pgp keys and teaching others how to encrypt mails independent of third party services is still better in my opinion, but especially for the users without the knowledge how sensitive private encryption keys are ProtonMail and lavabit are the best ones to still have a similar effective encryption.

I'll stick to "off the record" messaging (Google it)

for messaging and OpenPGP in mails as that is independent from the used service... After I taught my girlfriend how to use off the record messaging we usually chat completely encrypted still using Google Hangouts (okay, we had used it until Google disabled the XMPP version) or the old ICQ.

That's an idea for programs I still have. off the record messaging is still very sticked to using Pidgin as a chat client but is completely independent in the concept, so I thought about a kind of key-combo which encrypts text anywhere, no matter which messenger it is...

You guys could give Demonsaw a shot. It's pretty cool how it works. Think of it as telegram but with no established or registered usernames and the users are only known by the content of their messages over time unless of course they use the same username each time they connect and are public about their handle or name. The server software acts as a router and is free as in beer allowing you to set up your own hub where only people the know how to connect can connect

@-c-- having as many people try to use the best encryption for communication in general is the best way to obfuscate the secret services work goals. I mean try to think about you having the task to break an encryption just to see that its an "I love you" to the other person? And you were given the task because it could be harmful for the state....
