Welp, learning PHP for work now. Have to use an Open source thing built in Drupal for a Professor's research, but that means I need to learn PHP and how to style the site to match our existing style that we use on our ASP.NET sites. I'd be more excited if I was sure I could use PHP7, but it's at the mercy of how backwards compatible it is with 5.5.
I'm less than thrilled.2 -
Had to switch to Linux mint from Solus cause I needed to use Coq and I didn't feel like compiling it from scratch when it's easy to get in mint. Anyone used Coq before? My teacher loves it for discrete math, and I like functional languages so I'm a bit intrigued4

For you freelancers out there, I've been working on trying to make some income with it locally, making single page static sites for some local businesses and restaurants so that I can get a couple hundred for making the site and a little over the cost of hosting each month residually, offering like one free menu change per month, but all redesigns and support being hourly.
I want it to be accessible pricing cause like 5 of my favorite places to eat have defunct sites that I think weren't worth the cost anymore, and I'd love to be able to see up to date menus and hours and I'm certain others would too.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out what hosting would be best for this and if I'm being realistic enough with pricing. I like the idea of surge.sh, but I feel like 12/mo for a custom domain SSL, which is good for SSL, is higher than some of the other alternatives for a lightweight one sing page site.
Any help would be great, Have a great new year guys!3 -
Am I the only one who isn't really that bothered by Mozilla's mistake with Firefox and that Mr robot thing?
They made a big fuck-up, yes, but do you think they'll do it again? I don't.
They aren't a perfect company, but neither is anyone fucking else! They're still helping the web, giving grant money to open source, and have the best docs I've found, so I think this is just a misstep, not a red flag.2 -
Goddamned apple. "Just works" my ass.
My girlfriend's 2014 MBP told her an update had already downloaded and she had no choice but to install it, which doesn't bother me. Now, though, it tries to update, then fails, and tells you to run diagnostics. Diagnostics says nothing is wrong, and says to contact support and it boots a minimal version of the OS that only runs a minimal version of safari. You try to access the chat feature and it never fully loads the chat interface. I can probably restore it, but I wanna know what was wrong. It's a really expensive brick right now.3 -
Fuck me. 5 installation attempts later, still can't get arch to boot after removing the live usb. Do I have the wrong fucking kernel, cause it can't find it during boot now. Fucking hell, I just want this shit to run.30
-
Fuck me. I was installing arch after giving up on manjaro not working, and after fighting to get it connected to the wifi, I forgot to plug it in and it died 30 minutes or so into pacstrap.
Goddamned idiot, that's what I fucking am. -
Fuck me, I've been trying to install manjaro since last night. The XFCE version fails to not to usb, saying that the usb didn't respond. The architect version takes forever and I'm not sure what kernel is best for a fucking Thinkpad T61. Any help here?
-
Working on installing manjaro with i3 on an old Thinkpad T61 I got for 50 dollars. It's taking forever cause the internet speeds suck here and I've never installed anything but Ubuntu and mint so I'm hoping it goes well.
Anyone have any tips got this device?
Also slightly drunk, so that's a thing I guess.3 -
Fuck, is it worth learning PHP and WordPress to actually get freelance jobs? Everything I find is in fucking WordPress and I just need to make some fucking money6
-
So, I'm about to be up shit's Creek. I need a new source of income, ideally either a new job or becoming a freelancer. I have been making intranet sites with ASP.NET for a while now, and I can tell two things:
1. It's too corporate minded, so I'll need a fucking degree
2. It's too corporate minded, so I'll be stuck with people like my boss, who still use tables to align content despite the project having bootstrap.
I need to do something more fulfilling, but I probably will have to leave my job by December anyway due to some major fuck ups in my life, do I need to get something lined up. I have been brushing up on my HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills, but when it comes down to it, I suck at design so my "portfolio" is blatant clones to learn CSS and shitty Spartan things.
Basically, I'm anxious, terrified, and unable to figure out what comes next. Do I keep sending job applications and praying to whatever deity will listen, it do I start figuring out this freelance thing? If freelance, then how do I get into it? I'm terrified and desperate.1 -
Any nexus 6p users are out there? I'm thinking of flashing a new rom because the performance is taking a big hit and battery life is becoming abysmal. Any recommendations for this particular phone?20
-
Ugh, fuck man. I had planned an extremely general function for printing a truth table for a given proposition for a course, with a little functional programming thrown in. Instead, we are just supposed to show all 2^8 possible truth tables for 3 variables. That's eight nested loops with a hardcoded string that you inject the 8 values in.
I feel so disappointed1 -
For you front end developer out there:
How do you recommend a back end guy learn how to make something presentable? I can write HTML and CSS, but I can't seem to make anything that looks nice8 -
For those of you .Net people out there (".Net sucks" Stallman fellators need not apply), what would a few practice .net core web apis and MVC projects cost to host on Azure? They wouldn't be touched except by me and any people who want to see my portfolio projects directly, so I think that doesn't count as time for cost, but I'll be honest and say I don't entirely get their pricing.1
-
What places do you guys recommend for the job search?
I'm currently using Indeed and StackOverflow Jobs, but I'm not having any special luck there.2 -
I'm highly interested in starting freelancing with C# and ASP.NET, and toptal seems like a nice deal.
Anyone have any experience with them? Any tips/info that you could tell me? I've been burned by other sites, wanna make sure this is legit, and that I actually make this work3 -
Something that provides for my SO and I, pushes me to learn more, has realistic deadlines, and uses modern technologies with good standards.
Plus, the standards use tabs, not spaces 😜2 -
Fuck off with the zo pictures. We get it, the ai is funny, but it's all been posted, and she only says it so you'll post it. It got old fast, and all she regurgitates is shitty old memes.

The ability to find a cushy job with comfortable pay, benefits, and security. I don't want much, I just want to not have to need much ever again.

Historian who fucks up history stories every time I try to talk about them.
I love history, but I'll be damned if I can actually remember the details correctlyor articulate them1 -
Maybe it's just cause I fucking hate the elitism in the engineering college and every engineer I've met, but why do devs want to be called engineers? I'm a programmer, a developer, a coder, fucking anything rather than an engineer.
I associate that word with know-nothing "book-smart" fuckwads who think they're better than everyone, even someone doing the same thing without their useless degree.7 -
Sometimes I feel like a freak. So many rants are about things that just never seen to happen to me.
I've been using Windows 10 since release, never had an update while I was working.
I've never gotten a virus from an ad, abs don't use AdBlock.
I've never had a crash that lost my work, I save neurotically or the program automatically saved.
I've never had trouble with typing in any language, static or dynamic.
I've never had issues with semicolons, IDEs or compilers tell me the issue explicitly.
I guess I'm just weird or something :/15 -
FUCK OFF WITH THE ALGORITHM PICTURES!
I know that it might be funny that yadda was followed by yadda, but It isn't a rant, it isn't interesting, and FFS it isn't even funny.6 -
Okay, we fucking get it guys, you wish that you'd get changelogs with every app update and they'd tell you everything and blah blah blah.
Fuck off
We're the only people who even check, it's not worth the effort. Unless a major feature was added or a well known bug was fixed, the "fixed bugs" is more than enough for the general public.3 -
According to people here, ternary operators. I don't care what I'm doing, if I can use a ternary operator instead of an if, get ready for it!
I guess implicit brackets on conditionals and for loops if it's a single line. Anything that saves me typing boilerplate, but it's still readable, I'm gonna do it.1 -
So, we've finally finished our ASP.NET Webforms application, and we're looking onto MVC. We've decided against core just because it isn't as stable yet, and there are fewer libraries, which I'm cool with. However, we still have some baggage from webforms left in our way of approaching the problems. Since the college at large has a custom bootstrap release, we already have bootstrap and jQuery included in the project. What is the best way of going about implementing an equivalent of ComboBoxes, gridviews with paging, and anything else included in the default asp elements and AJAX toolkit ones? My boss is very much against taking in anything but large, well supported libraries like Angular & Angular-UI, so no jQuery plugins unless super stable and supported. I'm trying to save us from having to buy DevExpress for like 3000 across our team. Sorry for the long bullshit, and thanks if you even read it!

Jesus fucking christ people, stop resurrecting dead rants!
"Oh, look a rant from 30 days ago! Guess I'll leave a comment that is an exact duplicate of one from the middle of the thread!"
>:( Please stop, I don't want to have to unfollow posts every single fucking time!4 -
I fucking hate asp.net web forms. Today we implemented listboxes, so we expected them to just be a wrapper for HTML listboxes. NOPE! They are simply selects. Why they decided to hijack the name and do this, I don't know. That does explain why they don't have multiple columns like true listboxes.
So glad that for the next project, which we should start by the end of May, we'll be moving to MVC and .Net core. This shit is so stupid!3
