Alright people, let's make our own free, decentralized, p2p encrypted Internet.
How does that sound?21
So I dual booted my pc with Ubuntu a few weeks back. And I came to a conclusion today.
Um, windows needs to go.24
Initial steps of learning any new programming language :
*heck yeah I created a calculator. Guess I'll show my family that I actually can code! *
-hey mom, dad look I made a simple calculator using python B)
- uhm... That's great son but dont we already have one of those?
- yeah but like... this is completely different it uses a different programming language than what you and I have been using all this time.
- ah I see. Good for you then
*muttering to each other*
-are you sure he's got the aptitude to be a cse?
-at this point we can just hope.
Me:*stares blindly in my dark room contemplating why I'm alive*7

p2p working with people outside tech industry
WWDC was not about developers this year. It was a conference call with shareholders and investors. No bold moves, just several consecutive "this product will no longer suck" and "look at what you can do now, big companies" announcements.
watchOS will work now (it's too slow ATM). tvOS will just be less cumbersome. macOS still lagging behind (I mean, I already have great third party apps that clean my hard drive, but thank you for solving a problem I didn't need fixing). iOS 10 is simply about messages (it's not going to make me ditch Telegram, because it doesn't have an Android client, regardless of how large you make emoticons appear on screen). Apple Music will still suck, especially if you have more than one Apple ID. And Apple Maps will continue to be useless outside of the US.
Where did the bold moves go? Where's the "we're breaking up iTunes into several distinct apps that serve their purposes really well"? (Guess iTunes is too valuable a trademark...) Where is the "we will end the WKView vs UIView vs NSView nonsense"? (You know, OOP is about creating classes, which are abstractions and whose instances deal with the particularities of their environment; a View is a View, regardless of where they live; an instance of a View should care about being on a watch or on a phone, not the developer.) Where is the "we love indie developers and will help you"? They showed off a lot of integration with well established apps, that don't really need to stand out any more. They showed that video of "normal people" who have developed apps, but no one knows about them! And then they changed the AppStore so you can pay to advertise your app, but who has the means to do that? Indie devs are surely on a tight budget, so who's that helping again?
For me, this WWDC was sugar coated with a "we love you developers" BS, but was a business statement to large companies ("see what you can do now Uber, Lyft, WeChat, WhatsApp, Doordash, all the P2P payment apps, ESPN, WSJ and so on?"). It's already a known fact that the bulk of the AppStore revenue goes to the top 1% apps. And what's the point of having tvOS be open to developers if it is very unlikely I'll ever develop anything for it unless I work at CBS?
It's great that they want to make it easier for kids to learn Swift. But there's very little point in that, if those kids' apps aren't going to be used and are simply going to make the "we have 2 million apps on the AppStore" announcement look shinier for shareholders. Without a strong indie community, the Swift Playgrounds app for the iPad is just manufacturing workers for large corporations.
And without a strong indie community, things get tougher for indie clients as well. Who will have the money (and therefore the time) to implement all those integrations in order to even dream about competing with heavily funded apps?
Yeah... So thanks, Apple, but no thanks.16
First lecture of computer networks. Let's shove all of these abbreviations with their meaning, and possibly a associated port number in one 1.5 hour lecture:
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, SFTP, TCP, IP, UDP, ISP, DSL, DNS, LAN, WLAN, WDM, P2P, TELNET, PGP, TLS, SSL, SSH, MIME, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IANA, DHT, RTT, DHCP
I really feel sorry for students who didn't have previous knowledge about this stuff..5
Do you still store your music files locally?
I like owning my music files on my storage.
Time spent organising metadata
Savour the quality
I don't have an internet access all the time unless I'm home. I feel left behind seeing everyone just streaming music.21
I finally released source for the project i have been working on in school.
Its P2P system with LoRa based on Arduino.
I will slowly but surely start changing names over multiple sites from Haxk20 to DarkNeutrino as its much much more easy to pronouce. devRant will most likely stay as Haxk20 since most people here know me with that name but when you see DarkNeutrino somewhere on internet. Its me.14
Wtf bs is this? Can't governments just stop trying to control the internet?
It's literally the closest thing we have to a free and fair society on the planet and that's with all the tracking and abuse of information going on. I think we need to start applying our minds to creating a decentralised network with p2p discovery routed through our phones if we want to keep any semblance of freedom of speech or privacy around for our kids. Routing traffic wouldnt use more than 50-100mb of ram and would probably use a lot less battery than Google does listening to our conversations or transmiting our location data so we wouldn't even notice. If only we could find a cable free decentalized way to get data across the ocean no one would be able to control it again, I doubt we would be able to shut it down either.10
You probably dont know if you dont know me but i have created that stupid school project.
Now that i finally released source code for it. (Finally took me fucking time)
Im starting to polish it up a little bit and also make the code just better.
I probably havent explained what it is even.
Well its Arduino Based P2P network using LoRa as the main communication device and Bluetooth so you can use Smartphone to send data to it.
Really simple indeed but really powerful.
The project got turned down in competition as it didnt have "modules" they said. They wanted to make it device you could use in home to boil your coffee or some shit. Like IoT isnt enough now.
Kind of glad that it didnt win because that idea was horrible.
OK now thats out of the way.
If you want to contribute to it you can do so here: https://gitlab.com/Haxk20/...
Schematics, PCB design and boards used will be on there in few days. School is taking some time so i dont have much time to do it now.
Oh yeah and it also needs better name but well im terrible at naming things as you can see by the name of that project.1
Hello fellas! 👋
I recently told you that I’m planning to pull out Chaaat – a fully open source messenger that doesn’t track you and doesn’t share your data: https://devrant.com/rants/1549251/....
The project is also mentioned here: https://devrant.com/rants/1570178/...
So, I’m here to tell you good news – a great developer, @not-a-muggle, decided to join me, and now we made a team!
I also made some conversations and acquired “chaaat” name from another team on Heroku, so now we have consistent domain name on both Heroku and GitHub Pages.
We have Trello board with very well described tasks almost anyone can do. We also have Slack to have both business and free conversations.
If you’re seeking a place to contribute and gain some NodeJS / React / PWA / WebRTC experience with detailed code review from experienced developer, just mention me here or shoot me an email on email@example.com. Provide your email so I’ll be able to contact you.
Our main goals are:
1. Have fun and some experience
2. Make it to Chrome Experiments mention
Marketing/advertising help is much appreciated.
Feel free to email me anytime!9
One night, after one very stressful week of production code fixes (I was working on a game with some friends and I created the network infrastructure for P2P and database communication from scratch), I was at my gf's house. After we fell asleep, I stood up and screamed right at her something like "I fucking already told you how X works and how to communicate with Y. Learn to write code properly and after double checking yours then you shall ask me for a non-existing 'bug' fix. Learn how to properly write event based code and use polling you moron!". After that I turned to the other side and fell asleep immediately.
When I saw her the next morning sleeping in the couch, I could not understand why... Only after she described to me the whole incident I started laughing.
After that I just took two weeks off the project and after that period I never actually worked the same way (so hard) in my free time with them.1
Worst code I ever had to touch: a React application, createClass era, before redux was a thing, that had everything in one fucking component.
Every fucking thing.
This was a simple video chat application, but still. The component's code included:
- Views (contact list and video call screen) and logic to switch between them;
- All application state;
- API calls;
- Websocket message handling;
- WebRTC logic (getUserMedia and p2p streaming).
This app was built by one person in one month for a demo. That person left the company after the demo and I had to maintain that mess without zero React knowledge (I was doing angular at that time). On his last day he gave me a crash course and an overview of how the app worked.
Around that time I attended a few meetups and a conference with talks about React. That, my curiosity and ability to learn by refactoring helped me a lot when I had to add new features and fix bugs in that app.5
I have an exam in 4 hours. I've been studying all night and now I can't seem to retain anything.
I'm fuckin screwed.9
when you think about it.. Moses was the first guy ever to download data from The Cloud and distribute it via p2p protocol [torrent]. The first it pirate ever.
Not a dev!rant,/but certainly a rant. Long post ahead.
First of all I MISSED YOU ALL
Had my fair issues of shit these months. And for that, FUCK EVERYTHING. End of rant for now. I am still managing somehow to do - slowly as fuck, but who cares at this point - like finally going to uni, finding a psychologist and not a psycho, unraveling a fuckton of previous trauma (hi abuse) and ~drums~ buying my new desktop! Not exactly a nasa server but a middish level workstation/gaming place. I am shopping right now. The previous days have been shaky with all the flashback business and emotional rollercoaster of death, but I feel like going the right way somehow. Is it true? Who knows! But after enduring several issues of suicide planning and luckily only one serious-bugged attempt epically hilariously failed, the slightest hope is a victory. I like p2p, so feel free to torrent and seed this little joy. If it is mine it can be yours. Take it!
Also, you know how much autistic I am, but I'd really like to make some friends. I make attempts but honestly I am awkward errrr.... I don't know how many dude/ttes I can count on. For friend I mean simply someone that honestly likes me somehow, is loyal, and has interest in sharing they like to do or think! (And if they want to give me tips on security/sysadmin/dev stuff, even better, but not required obviously).
Also, I may have some projects in mind. Will publish in the projects section when the roughest idea is finished.
Maybe I deserve an updoot. In real life.
(Which is also here....)
FUCKING CHINESE SUPOSED IP CAMERAS...
First, they aren't Ip cameras, they are p2p cameras with different settings and more limited...
then took me 3 days to open 5 ports for 2 cameras, config the cameras, till they work.
YEY they finally work, can see them over the Internet (no default settings, even changed the Alias), have my Ip camera viewer on the Phone... but one doesn't activate on moviment.. in this 3 days only took 2 pictures with motion detection on and people passing in front of them... the other was working for like 5 minutes... giving black and white 7kb jpgs... after a few teeks... can't make it work again.
Now I have two cameras that I can see if my house is being robbed but no motion detection to warm me, or at least save some pictures on the server to serve as evidence (and maby finally get the team that is robbing one house a day, If they try to rob my house again...).
The cameras are very good as baby monitors or to play around, for 14$ and 20$... (love the 360º ball) , but as security cameras... Unless you have them connected to a security station and with a repeater close by... worthless...
Oh, and they may give me 1 good frame a second or lag to 10+seconds a frame...6
Do you, guys, have any VPN suggestions? I'm mostly looking for a VPN that doesn't throttle your speed, allows and encrypts P2P connections and is secure and reliable. I'm not quite sure what other more specific requirements I'm looking for, since I'm not too knowledgeable in this domain, but I'm nonetheless thanking you in advance :D8
Just a thought: wouldn't P2P greatly reduce server expenses and be much faster for people not in the US?5
"You basically need a iOS and Android app, with access to the driver and also to the final client with an administrative environment and integration to pay online via the app"
- Uber like app request from a friend
Have you seen beaker browser? It’s literally so cool - it’s a peer-to-peer browser and also you can host sites off it. Like, it actually has a “new site” button.
Just started using ZeroNet(https://zeronet.io/) and it's a nice technology, well thought, but it seems like it can't expand itself or find it's way in the end. That's sad. I don't know if this will improve over years or be forgotten.
So... I Have a question / rant / frustrated commenting to do...
WHY THA FUCK DO FIRMWARE TAKE SO LONG TO UPDATE!!!
been configuring my webserver and 2 p2p cameras to access from the outside, and for each click or change can take 1 to 5 minutes to implement...
And then, like 6 or 7 hours latter I notice that everytime the port wasn't associated, a small label in like size8 text shows that port is already in use...
And... Da FUCK??
I'm associating the ports myself... how can port 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, ... be In use?
I have my server in 80, WebDav e another non relevant port, and trying to find open ports for the p2p cams...
Fuck I'll just delete all that services that no one uses and are pre configured, like, emule? napster? FifaPC? WTF? I never played Fifa, don't like socker. KaZaA SERVER? WTF why does this shit comes pre-configured?
Btw I'm writing this while I wait for the router to finish every time :p7
Trying to implement WebRTC for Voice chat in the company app in Unity.
- it's super fucking fast
- it kinda is peer to peer
- WebRTC comes in very different ways and therefore you either need to properly config the server or change the way the app works
- Each signaling server might have different config so you can't even connect to different servers like you do for http, ftp and so on
- You need to use a server to know each peer
- You need to use another server to make the actual messages go through
- None of it seems to actually be p2p except the fact that you will need to make a different connection to each and every other client in the conference
So basically it was engineered to be as compatible as possible and therefore no server-side default was defined in the protocol, which means it won't ever be actually very compatible with anything at all since everyone will make its configuration.
Fuck me, fuck WebRTC and fuck this whole shit1
Imagine an online, public service, that allows you to communicate with others (for example a simple chat, game, whatever ).
The users connect to each others via p2p. Based on this, you can easily get the ip address of any user directly connected to you. P2p is used to reduce server load, but information is still verified (for example using RACS), so let's assume the data is always safe.
(please remember, this is just a imagined Szenario)
Now the question: AFAIK, the IP address is a sensitive information. Would p2p in this scenario still be 'legal' in the EU given the latest changes in the laws?7
Why can't the entire internet be a encrypted peer-peer network ?
Not a fan of centralised server system :(13
Anyone know private/encrypted p2p network drive app (best would be opensource) between devices in the internet, with multiple user support, invite only ?
It should work behind nat so need use some 3rd party hole punching server for handshakes.
Let’s say I got a movie I want to share with my friend but instead of him downloading it, I would stream it directly from my device and my friend would open it using ex vlc.
Same with other files, on computer can be mounted as network drive.
Or small app with drag drop or cli to add / remove shared directories.
Can be raspberry pi device.
Thinking more, it should work like vpn network but with tunnels between computers.
Can it be done using ipfs ?1
The Web 3 has coming and I really love that. The descentralized web is a new way for the devs. Some projects was started, like: Patchwork built on SSB protocol (Secure Scuttlebutt), Dat Project wich create the dat protocol for share files in P2P network. Someone has started same project into the new web?
Create a p2p version of Google Maps / OpenStreetMap that uses people's browsers to store the map tiles of "their region".
Started already by building a proof-of-concept called p2p-fetch (uses GunDB under the hood) and mixing it with the awesome Leaflet library.
spent all day with a new project, maybe you guys can help.
I have two p2p cameras that I want to setup and access when my family goes on vacation.
Cameras are working (with mildly success) , now, what Is the best option to access them from the Internet?
I can send e-mails, but can't config the SMTP server (don't know why always gives connection error, but guessing that maby this kind of products are blocked from sending e-mails), tried Gmail, mail, and Hotmail.
ftp-server.. don't have any online (have a VPS with 200 mb free ram...)
While trying to fall asleep, I came to the conclusion that a solution to privacy would be an encrypted p2p messenger. You'd need a dns-like system that can tell the peers how to contact their communication partners. Then I searched for one, and there was a good looking one, but it wasn't open source. looks secure otherwise, but perfection looks different.
Can anyone recommend something similar to kripter/tell me why it would be secure/insecure to use their service instead of, say, signal? Not that I truly NEED this, but I at least want to try it :)5
Dont want anything, maybe an alternative main stream social network which I actually own my data and I can define who accesses it and who doesnt. Its my info not the company that it is being held on.
Smart p2p and encrypted which somehow only those I allow can view it.3
Our current assignment in class is a group project, where we develop a p2p chat client that works within the same network. The whole class needs to use a common protocol, so that the different groups can communicate, so the leaders have to choose/create one. I got Democratically elected. I also defined most of the protocol until now and kinda managed my group.
Since GUI-guy had the least stuff to I told him to copy a Persona 5 theme😆
Need Help ...
I want to use the RTSP from my p2p cameras to view the images from outside... how can I do this?
I can't find any good information online... Fk6
Has anyone built a p2p data/video-stream application between a native java peer and a web application? I walked through some really promising webrtc tutorials, but it seems that webrtc is for browsers only.2
How possible is it to have a decentralised internet?
Because currently we have an almost centralised net... Where the major players are Google, Amazon, Alibaba and the likes acting as data holders.
This really bothers me and it's fair to say that the original dream of an internet for the people, by the people, is long gone.
Can we foresee a p2p in place of this monopolitic centralised internet?4
I'm starting an app open-source. Consists of an emergency "sonar", which you will publish notices and reply too with your connected peers. And I need suggestions and collabs. Can see on my GitHub: github.com/roqueando/konarium.io
Who is interested in helping in backend or frontend I started a workgroup on slack too, so here is the room: todevmore.slack.com
If you have a question, comment below I will reply.
$cash me outside, how 'bout that?
What do people use (I'm specifically interested in UK, but all answers welcome!) for P2P payments?
I like square cash, just so that I can say that. Monzo next, and the I guess direct bank transfer but only with a handful of people I really know. You wouldn't want to give it to stranger, and its a cumbersome process.4
Is there any way I can push a service to internet via something like p2p? My current internet is in a ip pool thus I cannot open a port to world.
Also I'm searching through internet too. Keep lmgtfy away now.10
