I really hate it when people say "the codes are not working" ....no its simply code!!!!!!

I tend to agree with you that it makes no sense to pluralize code (as in source code) as it is a mass noun.

Then again, I eat language purists for breakfast and might just use it to annoy you :>

@hero-rant but the promo codes really aren't working!!!

I'd say non Devs don't understand the difference between codes (as in nuclear launch codes 🙃) and code. It's all the same to those muggles.

    Hence, "codes" 😬
  • 2
It's a mass noun. Like "water".

No, you can't write two code.
But you can learn how two code...
    ...sorry. :D
  • 2
But there is a plural of water, like differend waters from differend places, or if you have 2 bottles than its 2 waters.

Um so if i have 2 nuclear bomp activation things than its codes? And if i have 2 files with sourcrcode then its a non entity thing of "the code"?

    Well i just say souce.

@Salmakis so if we are talking about multiple projects and their in different repos... than "give me the source codes" would actually work.... assuming they will send each to you separately...

@Salmakis it's like how you have a lot of furniture and never furnitures.
  • 1
@Salmakis some people argue that you're really saying two (bottles of) water when you say two water.

But honestly, I'm a linguist and literally do not give a flying shit about what people think good grammar is, everybody please just keep on talking weird and "incorrectly" so that I have cool things to think about.

@shaji "I have furnitures for sale"?

    Guess English is just confusing....

@cleveloper so you teach computers how to speak? So how do you program this stuff?
  • 1
@billgates that's the goal! I'm super interested in speech production and I specialized in phonology but right now I work in natural language processing and chat bot building.
  • 0
@billgates you can only have furniture for sale. Never furnitures. Like Never ever.

    @cleveloper And "data".

    ...*ducks*

@demiko True, but outside of pointing out that fact, I don't think I've ever seen it actually used anywhere...
