So I'm building an app, donations get you a serial key. Once a month I want the app to verify the key with a server.
Recommendations for this? It's written in c++, if that matters.7
Ugh, fxk. I got a promotion, I'm now a team lead for 4 developers, and I fxking hate it.
They never asked me if I wanted the position, they just threw me into it this week. They ripped me away from the team I had great chemistry with and put me on this other team with people I have no connection with.
To make matters worse, I'm also responsible for production servers of the clients of this team, one has malware even.
On top of all of this, they made me move desks for a new developer to fill my spot.
How do you demote yourself? Why would a company want someone to perform poorly (on purpose, I don't care) than to just keep their employee happy?
I was part of a on-call rotation. We had ~800 microsites with decent traffic on this one box, because that's a good idea...
One day the box was experiencing kernel panics and causing core dumps. After exhausting every possiblity I decided it was time to restart the box:
sudo shutdown now
Missed the -r and the box was not accessible remotely. Had to wait for someone at the data center to terminal in.
Downtime was ~2 hours.
This was caused by a crontab that automatically ran apt-get update & apt-get upgrade... Also made by me... None of this should have worked or allowed to be done!
I have many stickers on my laptop, need some more to complete the selection. Would love to see devRant on here! Help me reach the goal? Suggestions as to what else to add?8
As a freelancer, I outsource every bit of work to other countries with cheaper labor and charge the client like a rollercoaster14
I absolutely hate click bait... But not type you're thinking of. The type of click bait of a stack overflow question and it's either totally not related or goes unanswered... Or even worse it's just a typo in their code.
But i have a solution! You won't believe what it is!
++ If you clicked read more 😂😂😂
(PS: I don't have a solution, I still hate it and struggle daily)1
@dfox and @trogus can we have the ability to make polls? Would be great to get the opinion visually instead of just comments. Just a thought3
So I've been working on a side project, it's intended to be sold as commercial software. I'm honestly making it because I love it's purpose, buts it's commercial because I have costs I endured while building and to keep the service aspect of it running.
Anyone have insight into issues I might have building cross-platform software, distribution, and support of a commercial product? I'm more or less worried about the "clueless" folks who don't read FAQs.2
