I hate it when people dislike things because it’s cool.

“PHP is terrible,” they say.

Yeah! If it was any good then most websites on the Internet would be coded in it... oh wait.

“Nickelback suck,” they say.

Of course. That’s why they’ve never been able to make any money off their “terrible” music. Oops. Wrong again.

What other things are “cool” to hate just because people say so?

I think there was a time when PHP bashing brought traffic to blogs. The coders on the PHP chatrooms like freenode bore the brunt of the tsunami of backlash. Fun times. PHP bashing is down to sporadic fits of rage by "professionals". I think it's out of fashion now.

    PHP is horrible
    It’s nasty
    It’s bloated
    It doesn’t work
    It’s stupid as all hell

    - - -
Now please excuse me while I let my little PHP based HTML parsing scraper run through GitHub downloading PDFs from massive ebook collections and fill up a folder of saved books.

    Afternoon well spent 😁

Wait you stole my name @coda 😂

Nobody is dissing php because it's cool. You really need to get you hear out of your ass my friend
  • 4
@inaba they’re dissing because (I’m saying it again and again) they don’t know how to use it and mostly their knowledge about php ends on web side only
  • 2
Just because nickleback made money off their music doesn't mean they are good. They are one of the few bands worse than smashmouth.
  • 3
    "Javascript is horrible"
  • 9
If a hundred flies like shit, it doesn't mean it's good.
  • 0
    @electrineer || woah. that's deep. that's real deep.
  • 1
@mlask bloody hell, then you better go listen to some critics then. It would be good for you.

Or listen to nickleback and live in your own little bubble. Whatever floats your boat

My problem with X, Y, Z bashing is that a lot of developers (using this term loosely) bandwagon from stuff they read on random message boards to sound smarter than most other people. “PHP sucks” “why exactly does it suck?” “Because it...” and back to the message boards to find more opinions to regurgitate
  • 1
@ryanmhoffman wow. How dare you diss two of my favourite bands? Let me guess, you probably dislike ICP too, huh. smh
  • 14
    Popularity != quality

I don't think that it's a good comparison, money rarely means good. The richest artists nowadays are not the best ones.

So, the comparison with PHP, which is free, is not good at all. IMO.
  • 2
@Root that’s very true and I think my examples weren’t the best to illustrate my point. I was just trying to write the rant a little more interestingly :-)

The point I was trying to get across is that because PHP isn’t perfect experienced developers have pointed out the bad parts and rookies who want to sound cool turn this into “lol php sux”.

    @coda ... experienced developers ... and rookies ...

Just stop, trying to appear superior is just sad as hell
  • 1
@inaba once again you show yours ignorance and totally no knowledge of php (and probably every other lang). Only rookies and kiddos are trying to prove that one language is better than other. Experienced programmers just know, that best language is the one they know the best and which is most natural for them.
  • -1
@mlask There you go again, acting condescending just because you can't take any criticism of your favourite language. Just stop, it's sad
  • 0
@inaba no, the sad thing is that you’re kiddo with no knowledge, no creativity and no job and you think you know things better than someone who live from coding. In php, of course.
  • 1
@mlask By all means call me all the name that you want,, doesn't change the fact that you can't handle your favourite language being criticised. Acting childish about it doesn't help you
  • 0
@mlask I know this site is called devRant but damn that guy above is hostile. We’re defending the underdog here. We’re not trying to act “superior”.
  • 2
Nickelback are my favourite band and I’m a php developer.

Did we just become best friends?
  • 0
Well Php is as bad as you want it to be:
Most complaints are because of some badly written code and php allows that but if you want it can also be great; i admit some old design implementation were bad but with time it got more refined and if properly used it can be a great tool

    @SSDD high five! ✋
  • 1
@xprnio haha sorry not sorry. I'll stick with Dave Matthews Band and let you enjoy all the Nickelback and Smashmouth you want as long as you never make me listen to them. You can enjoy php if you want too, I'll stick with Java!
  • 1
*reels @ryanmhoffman in* oh boy, it's a big one!

Also, I used to do Java for 5 years, it's what I started out with. I hate php, and the bands were the clearest type of bait I could imagine, but somehow it wasn't clear enough for you
  • 1
@xprnio sarcasm not found before 🤣
  • 1
@xprnio lol yep I took that bait. I should have known no human can actually like those bands and live!
  • 2
@coda in a master's hands, tools are irrelevant.

Skilled developers can make wonderful things with PHP despite its many flaws, just as Michelangelo could paint with a stick.
  • 2
    PHP is garbage
  • 2
I just don't get why you have to hate something just because you don't know how to use it nor need it. I don't hate other spoken languages just because I don't use them.

I use .NET (C#&VB) Java, Python, Js, Ruby, Php,C++ and a bunch of others in monthly or at least yearly basis. All have their flaws, you just have to know them.
  • 0
@Senior Because, and I'm gonna blow your mind, most people that don't like PHP have a reason to not like PHP
  • 0
  • 1
@inaba Usually those are because of improper use and knowledge rather than the language/platform itself
  • 0
@inaba and here he goes again... If you doesn't like it, just don't use it. It's that simple! I don't like Python, but I'm not saying that "it's a shit" and "why anyone uses it?"...
  • 1
@Senior No, no really. You should learn to listen to people

@mlask Because, just like you I'm allowed to express my opinion on something that I don't like that people keep bringing up ;)
If someone asked why people would dislike Python, then you surely would be in your right to comment on it.
  • 0
@inaba I listen to people all the time, it's just that most of the younger and/or less experienced devs tend to have a need to hate technologies to show off, while they are actually doing the opposite
  • 0
@Senior or maybe you ought to stop dismissing people based off of your own idea of experience, and learn to accept peoples opinions ;)
  • 2
@inaba I think you missed the original point. The difference between experienced and rookie isn’t that the former is neutral to everything and the later only hates, but that the former can actually formulate coherent arguments as to why they dislike X, Y, Z. The latter however, read like some Reddit post where someone shits on X , others agree, and they bandwagon.

Like I do have some dislike to PHP, because the documentation is vague to me, the community on it seems more hostile than some other ones, and there are some inconsistencies with how naming and some other parts go. But then again I love java, and yet I’ve read books (like the Josh Bloch one) that go into detail about the many fuck ups of the language. Nothing is perfect and has flaws, it’s about being able to see the errors not just bandwagoning

Wait, is it "cool" to hate people who hate things because it's "cool"?
