Mizz14176287ySurface Book 2
Its an 7th gen Processor with the 13.5 config. but do you REALLY need an 8th gen Processor? -
@Mizz141 I was looking at that one. It's nice, but yes, I really do need a quad core, hence the need for an 8th gen. I'm doing video editing on occasion, and even when on occasion, I could really use those extra 2 cores/4 threads to help lower rendering times.
Also doing some occasional OBS streaming with development work on it, so the added cores/threads helps to keep it looking smooth. -
@Mizz141 I have 2 desktops and a laptop that performs faster than most desktops...
The point of this was to get recommendations based on the specs I was looking for, not have a debate about laptops vs desktops or 7th vs 8th gen CPUs. -
@ArchLinux
Macs aren't my cup of tea, but I have no problem bootcamping windows or Linux on it. They just tend to be really expensive, even for older models. I hate the design, which I could get over if it wasn't so overpriced.
The carbon is really nice on specs, but quite a bit out of the budget range.
The T460P on the other hand is pretty solid, if a little thicker than the Yoga I got.
Great recommendation though! I'll take a look at some reviews for it and get an idea if that's the route I wanna go. Thanks! ♥️ -
@CodeMonkeyG though great on the form factor, it's a bit out of the price range. Really nice looking laptop though!
-
I love the yoga 720!
Fast and sleek (surprisingly outdoes it's specs) with a beautiful look and very portable (talking about the 13 inch). -
@reset--hard Yeah the 13 inch is the one I got.
I wasn't impressed by first use though. Seemed really sluggish for no reason. Did a full wipe and fresh Windows 10 install and it's performing great now though.
I'm just putting feelers out there before I'm fully committed in case there's anything better for the same price, but I wouldn't be unhappy with this for the long term. -
@ArchLinux Yeah the new MacBooks are just overpriced junk now. Far better off hackintoshing a compatible desktop/laptop than wasting a penny on Apple now. 😂
-
Take your $1000 dollars and buy 30 raspberry pi 3... Run them as a cluster and SSH in to that.
-
-
@Mizz141 Not a viable option because I travel often, hence the need of a laptop with the specs I stated. Remoting in isn't worth the hassle and lag.
The post was pretty clear with what I'm looking for... -
@ArchLinux ++ for ThinkPad, great laptop series. if you have the cash you can get some pretty beastly setups.
-
@Vip3rDev that Thinkpad carbon is really speaking to me, but just way out of budget. I might grab that later on in the year, but definitely need to stick around $1000 for now.
-
@Mizz141 Ehh, I don't use Reddit. Took me a minute to figure out what you were even referencing.

Freytag727yI love my Dell XPS15 upgraded to 16 gigs ram. Great weight, love the screen and good battery lifetime.
-
I'm eyeing a ThinkPad T480s now. If you can get student discount you might be able to squeeze it in your budget. Or the T480.
-
Forgot to say that Dell has a lot of juicy promotions on their website so you can get the XPS 15 for much less. Maybe try during Easter and keep an eye on promotions
-
Xonuss937yMan, sometimes I envy you americans, those prices are neat AF. The i7 13,3 inch 720 goes for $1200 on best buy. If you were to buy the exact same computer here, you'd have to cash up with what equals to $1900 🙃

Necronan107yI have the t460p with a quad i7, 16gb of ram and 512ssd. It has a 14in. Scheen with a UHD (2556) resolution. I love it so far although to be honest, the resolution is not necessary at this size screen, imo. I dual boot windows and ubuntu on it. I think the t460 is now the t480 as someone else mentioned.

An old samsung slim laptop with 3gb of ram and 2.7ghz of cpu. Its also missing 2 keycaps...
Also a dent on the back from the time where the couch I was sleeping toppled over on it.. with me
Damn I need a new one -
I'm using dell Inspiron 7560. Has i7 7th Gen processor, 128 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD. Comes with 8gb ram pre-installed which you can easily expand to 16gb by adding one more 8 gb stick. Total price will be around 1050$. I'd suggest you go for same

*sigh*
While I appreciate the comments, most aren't very productive. I mean, I laid out the specs I need as clearly as I could...
Big thanks to those who provided meaningful and applicable suggestions. I'm looking at the XPS 15 right now and might spring a few extra bucks to get it.

So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.
So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?
Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):
-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)
I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).
