    A company where you should work and not watch videos!

    Youtube taught me how to code, music helps me.. so i need both to work x)
    @Mizz141 cmon, you'll almost never work for a full day

    Most of companies blocks those to gain "Productivity". But if u love music while coding, u can use your smartphone.

    @Jakuho thank you :')

    the most modern firewalls are just a linux box with iptables (routing between networks), apache (configuraion through webinterface and as http proxy) and an dns cache. and every consultant warns everyone that they must block everything except port 443 and 80 and its bad if the firewall responds icmp packets from the internet.

    Well it’s time to leave then. And having a stressed employee will have a greater toll for productivity

    My workplace blocks almost all media sites and social networking sites out there. Won't even allow me to use NPM. I feel sad.

    Tunnel a SOCKS5 proxy over SSH.

    Companies who want their bandwidth used for work and not for 10 different employees all steaming 4K music videos while the browser is minified.

    Download the music at home and play in offline mode, problem solved.

    What the fuck? Is that supposed to be college? Like with shit restrictions and all?
  • 1
    In our case, we're not prohibited to use these streaming sites but are not advised also to avoid connection issues.

    @kwilliams aye aye captain

    @py2js my college has no restrictions xD

    The concern is probably more focused on network quality, and not time micromanagement.

    @bahua @gr8d3v
    You guys might want to reconsider that. Based on company security policies, you might be putting your whole network at risk with the tunnel. Although, this may not actually create problems, you'll probably get into trouble if something goes down in the company network structure, a review of the network logs is performed and your systems are found to have invited traffic without passing through the firewall/proxy.

    often its just NTLM AUTH that fails. You can use local http proxy to overcome this problem

    Companies in India of course

    Banks, insurance, finanse.. anywhere where there's micromanagement really.
    Had this problem once in a company ages ages ago. Used some obscure vpn service from Poland and it worked like a charm. Called nk something... can't remember

    @OdeToCode long time man, how you doin?

    Where I work, the company document specifically says that they have a connection for work and a connection for the employee. However, management doesn't care and does not let employees use their connection.

    I simply use my phone's LTE.
  • 2
    All of the people suggesting use your phone... Ugh.
    The company is supposed to create a productive environment for work. Blocking resources like YouTube and Spotify works against that. If your employee is actively looking for ways to get the content he's distracted and pissed and not focusing on actual problems.
    (I also have this problem at work. It's worse in my case because they block even imgur. That means the pics on stack overflow or some other forum never open. I can't use giphy. Oh but someone found that some minigames site works. It's some flash games collection site. Twitter works too.)

    Also, Spotify web player is much better than app. You can change music faster without disturbing your flow.

    Welcome to the real world boy.

    @hugh-mungus music decreases productivity? In which world? Can't do shit without music to rock. I hate to hear my surroundings while I try to think about a problem. This none predictable noise is just annoying. Music is love!
  • 2
    @hugh-mungus in contrast to conversations in a big office my brain does not try to analyse/comprehend the music. Thats why it increases my productivity. Don't have to actively listen to music to enjoy it. But I assume it's not true for all human beeings :)
