C0D4669016yIf my poor mans laptop would boot into a Linux build without crashing, over heating or freezing, I would. But I can’t so Windows it is 😎
Now to go open up my steam collection.
Welcome to devRant -
devJs13266yI play games on linux(works on mac too), so no biggie there. about development and OSs... doesn't really matter, it all comes down to personal preferences.
try everything and then decide what is best experience for YOU. I liked sublime and atom, code not so much, now using only webstorm. preferences can change -
endor56666yHow the fuck can people think a mac laptop would be a better dev machine? The hardware is abismal and outdated, the only good thing about it is the screen.
How am I supposed to run editors, IDEs, tools, browsers, and VMs on a crappy cpu with 2 cores and less cycles than a car's engine? -
@C0D4 how does a laptop manage Windows but not Linux?? What distro have you tried?
-
C0D4669016y@DucksCanCode no idea
Ubuntu, Linux mint, Antergos, Manjaro all ended badly.
Either they don’t boot into the installer, install and freeze at the login, or hang at splash screen causing it to overheat quickly.
I gave up and sticking to Windows until I get a new laptop. -
devJs13266y@endor - I agree with you on poor hardware in luxury item called mac. my dell laptop has decent hardware and runs smooth whatever i throw at it.

The argument of Mac people, that "it just works", while not always true, is only due to the fact that Mac OS is by choice developed to run on Apple-sold hardware, thus removing the diffuculty of having to support basically any hardware in any combination.
Apple is just like a dev who says to everyone "it worxxx on mah machine" - a useless statement. -
endor56666y@PonySlaystation "It just works*"
*: except for stuff which we don't officially support, in which case welcome to hell -

I’m thinking it’s purely a lack of Acer support with Unix, but as for specs
AMD A6-3400 (1.4-2.3 Quad Core)
8Gb ram
750Gb SATA HDD
Radeon HD 6480
Everything else:

@C0D4 that's definitely capable of Windows and Linux. Probably h/w damage, either that or issues with the drive setup (Maybe try getting a drive backup of Windows and getting to a terminal on a live disk, then wipe the drive and start again with best settings?)
Have a look at your BIOS setup too, just peek at the settings and have a look to see if there's anything that shouldn't be there. -

Yea It should be capable of a distro install. Bios seems fine and is flashed to Acer’s latest bios, even if it’s limited in settings.
The HDD was a second hdd instead of a dual boot so I don’t inadvertently delete a lot of things.
The HDD could potentially be the problem but it does pass health checks.

My favorite thing about developing on a windows machine is hearing that it would be "so" much better if I was a using a Mac... at least I can play games on my system. *single tear*
