(Not dev, not rant, although it might become one later on)

So as some of you may know, I am colorblind. I always avoid working with colors because of it. Yesterday I decided to do something I've always wanted, painting. And no I don't mean painting on a canvas but miniatures and other 3D models.

I love catan, I love 3D printing and I thought let's print a catan set and paint it myself, without depending on family to ask for colors.
I've got this German paint tubes and used the wikipedia color descriptions to decide what to paint which color.

The following is the result, its a wheat tile (and in the background a wood tile).
Feel free to give tips and suggestions. If I picked a wrong color please tell me so I can update my tactics.

Finally took this step. Yay

    Pretty accurate choice of color.
It makes me smile because I just bought a box of Warhammer 40k miniatures after not doing so for about 10 years, and although I'm not colour blind I have no idea what to paint then.

Just trying to do what your doing requires 1000 times more inner strength.
I know jack shit about Catan, other than that, I'm here to help you If I can.

@Hallelouia yay, the ground was worrying me the most since ochre yellow can vary from brownish yellow to yellowish brown. Wanted to make the ground a bit muddy/earth.

Do you have painting tips to reach the small things surrounded by a different color?

@Codex404 patience, a small brush, and something absorbing and thin enough to catch any spill.

Also you might wanna check out "dry brushing" if you want to do details on sharp angles.

Also diluting your paint a lot will help color inside "holes" and recesses

@Hallelouia there are a few terms I will look up. Thanks

Back when i was doing art, id download an app that displayed rgb values from the camera, that might help you too.

@Hallelouia I used some of your tips on the next three tiles.

The most difficult thing was the color for the ore and brick tile (the brick tile still to be made).

@Codex404 Are the sheep & forest tiles final form? Because the grass should be (imho) more stronger green & now it looks pastele greenblue-ish to me..

@sladuled its the photo and lighting. Will make a better photo later on.

    Awesome, keep it up ;)

Do you have the source files for these tiles? As in: can you share them / where did you get them?

@json-Bourne I don't have a favorite army, what I like is painting them. I'd like to think about what my favorite miniature is but they changed them so much in 10 years I can't really tell you like that...

Right now I got some Astra Militarum to make a miniature for a future character for a wh40k: dark heresy campaign.

Well... There's that fraction that has a armor rainbow colored... Or that race of orcs that have very flashy colors on their armor...
I know shit about 40k but I'm addicted to a YouTube channel about 40k lol

It looks just like a civ hex thing!

@sladuled took a picture with flash and this is a bit more like how it really is. (The color I used is called Emerald green)

In this one I've added the tile bases which will contain magnets to keep the tiles together.

Like the green ones :D Looks like grass with bushes on top.

@GyroGearloose the one on the top is a forest, the other one is sheep. The yellow one was shot before and that is more color accurate

@Codex404 The yellow one looks like a weet field :D I'm liking it.

@GyroGearloose do you mean weed or wheat?
    It is a wheat field.

    @Codex404 Wheat, sorry, bad Englishe.
    Btw what are you creating?

@GyroGearloose settlers of catan, its a famous board game.
Quick summary (not the complete rules):
    - Default game is 2-4 players, expansions for 5-6 available.
    - the first person to get ten points (default, can change with expansions) wins the game.
    - you get points by building villages (1p) and cities(2p)
    - you can build things using the resources on the island (brick, wood, grain, wool and ore)
    - each resource tile has a number between 2 and 12 on it (except 7). When its your turn you can throw to dice and everyone who has a village next to that tile gets one of its resource, when you have a city you will get two.
    - you can trade resources with other players or the bank (four resources for one of choice or a better deal when you have a settlement on harbors)

    A village costs: 1 wood, 1 brick, 1 wool and 1 wheat.
A city costs: 2 wheat and 3 ores.

A city can only be placed as an upgrade for an existing village.

@Codex404 Nice. It's like a settlers board game :D Know I get it, each tile gives one type of resource :D So you buy them unpainted, is that it?
  • 1
    @GyroGearloose I've printed it myself.

If you buy the game you get flat cardboard tiles
