My dad said, every real software engineer uses Linux. What's your opinion?

    This is childish

    So true. Don't let anyone make you believe otherwise. If they are advocating for Windows they're brainwashed into liking a monopolistic system.

    Every person that uses the internet uses Linux

    Depends on what you are working on, I'm of the opinion that you should know Linux/Unix to be a better developer because it gives you the chance to expand your knowledge on things like OS fundamentals, servers, etc. Because it gives you more control over the system.

    Sounds like he wanted to say he uses arch or gentoo

    True unless soft engineer uses apple or MS tech.

    Real software engineers see 0,255,0 instead of leafs and transport 01 directly to cpu without peripheral devices.

    Depends on the employer.

    I think he has an OS stuck up his ass.

    Any real software developer can utilise any OS to do their job, granted Linux makes some things easier but good luck building software for windows or Mac specifically while only using Linux.

    On that note, back to my Linux mint vm on Windows I go, or maybe I’ll use the hackintosh vm today 🤷‍♂️

    You know how a horse sees? You know how we put blinders on them in effectively blocking their sight?

    This statement of his, is a great example of that. Though true for most of the industry, it's not that Apple or Microsoft doesn't exist in the same areas...

    @mundo03 Except MS Tech includes Linux these days (They have their own Linux distro, parts of the azure infrastructure and things like AKS runs on Linux. It is pretty darn hard to avoid using Linux these days. (Unless you only count running it on your own desktop/laptop as "using it")

    @ItsNotMyFault
    What if you code for windows?
  • 1
    @mundo03 As long as you only code desktop applications you might be able to only use linux indirectly.

    @ItsNotMyFault sounds windows is evolving.
    Thanks for sharing. Still use it for games only.
