Have you tried jetbrains products? They're incredibly powerful, albeit a bit expensive.
I haven't quite checked if it phones home, but that might be worth a try, I found them incredible coming from NetBeans -
donuts238486y@gruff wait what? So I can cancel and keep the software? How much is 12 months cost?
-
@billgates it does on e to validate it, and you can also just use the offline verification, so not sure if that is still a valid concern, but I'm no expert
-
@gruff it's pretty good, but still expensive as a student, but definitely worth every penny! (I have the education license which is free, but I'll be buying a licence as soon as I'm no longer eligible)
-
@billgates you pay for updates, so one year of licensing, and after that year you're allowed to keep the last version forever, and you can buy an update licence down the road whenever you want
-
yeah vs code is electron based.
So it's a chromium based webbrowser which checks for updates. -
@irene well, I mean, I'm not saying it's overly expensive, just that as a student, that more than my monthly take-home
-
@irene again, not saying it isn't manageable, I'm just stating that 1: it's more than people are used to (aka free) and 2: that 250 is nothing to scoff at.
Not arguing, just putting things into perspective -
donuts238486y@FrodoSwaggins true... Even I used GH Desktop to push... I forgot about local repos...
-
@billgates what about gitlab, bitbucket, Gitea and whatever other gui things people have.
-
I mean... You mentioned several big companies, but, how can you compare an IDE with an Editor (on steroids)...
I get the paranoia about the outbound communication with MS. But why from NetBeans to vscode?
I mean, if you don't like it just uninstall it and try Atom or Sublime or Emacs. -
Aight time to fork and pull out all the MS stuff.
Wait a minute... Do you think it could be checking for extension updates? Did you turn that off? -
@musician I'll be doing that with quite some software as soon as I've got time (signal being the first) but unfortunately, having 5 projects at the same time + a full-time job doesn't give me much room ;)
-
@linuxxx I know what you mean... Another side project when you already have too many is... daring. At best.
-
gruff5576y@billgates depends on ide, pycharm is 6.90 gbp at bottom end and rider 9.90 at the higher end or 19.90 for everything they do. If you have a student license they will give you another 25 percent off when you graduate. So all their products are equivalent to buying them 1 large coffee a week and maybe a bun at the end of the month. I justify my expenses in cups of coffee 🤣
-
@-Tor sublime is not open source. It uses the winrar model where it'll bug you to pay for it but still let you use it
-
@tbodt Very late but:
- their update checking domain (yes, disabled that)
- msecnd.com (if I remember correctly...)

Visual Studio Code.
I've tried you because of hearing a lot of good stuff about you. I'd switch back to netbeans regardless because I love netbeans and I always try to use as little as possible from companies like Google/microsoft/facebook (and others) but what you're pulling right now is un-fucking-believable.
I've disabled ANY AND EVERY form of calling home I could (find) in your settings. Crash reports, automatic updates, metrics, you name it. I've searched all the fucking settings but I can't find any other home calling thing that's enabled and yet:
I'm monitoring every goddamn DNS request (through my own DNS server) and I'm still seeing calls to a Microsoft owned domain. Closed all my browser sessions and you as well and it stopped. Started browser again but not you, nothing.
Started you again: BAM. Calls to that damned Microsoft owned domain again.
If you can't honour my decision for disabling any form of home calls, go fuck yourself.
Netbeans, I'm back, I've missed you 💜
