Yeah, my company I'm interning in has a ban on listening to music too. It's mentioned in the corporate guidelines that was handed over to me on the first day and I decided "There's one guideline I'm going to break". :D
I asked my manager first thing when I saw her next and she said it's okay as long as I don't zone out completely. Sure thing. ๐ -
Do it anyway. What are they going to do, fire you?
Fine. Get a job elsewhere if that happens. You're a developer. It's fine. -
Keylan546yI spent many years without music when I worked in retail (not at a desk) I was very thankful when I got my hardware admin job at a desk that they allow music. I tend to listen to video game music, brings back great memories on some of those games. I sometimes even listen through my speakers, and the other IT guys enjoy many of the songs too.
Hopefully enough people complain, and the ban gets repealed. -
@karma if they ban the drinking of tea as will I'll just give in and hang myself...
-
@wateringdisease I'm in the UK, where the good old fashioned style of management never dies... Sigh
-
@Christine sadly, I'm too old to get another job, so I guess I'll just have to put up with the corporate BS!
-
bahua129046yWithout headphones, I wouldn't be able to get on any calls. Also, that's such a fundamental quality of life aspect of my work that if my employer adopted such a policy, I would switch to 100% work from home. Or I would find a new job.
-
gruff5576yYeah same shit rule at my place although it’s ok as only in office for 5 hours. Not company wide either just my boss which makes it even worse. I constantly forward him articles about how listening music is beneficial but apparently I tap if I listen to music, like yeah obviously it’s not like I will the keyboard to put characters on the screen to turn into dollars for them. Pricks
-
@teadrinker I'm worried now. It's there such a thing? I mean, could you literally not find another job or another job that pays as much as your current job?
My I ask how old you are? -
@polaroidkidd Almost 65... I was very lucky to get this job when I was made redundant from the previous one at age 61. I would love to retire - I've had 45 years of the corporate world and that's more than enough for anyone! I still have bills to pay though :-(

In 'clean coder' book it clearly states that listening to music while programming helps focus. But what do managers know, they never heard of 'the zone'. Please find that book and show it to your manager

fbarrella216y> Buy a pair of gloves
> Buy a bluetooth headphone
> Insert it into the gloves and glue it
(I'll leave it the gluing method to you)
> Lay your head over the hand that's wearing the glove
> Profit $$$ -
You could get your hands on one of those speakers that send sound through your skull rather than through your ears (don't remember what it's called). They're not headphones so technically you're not breaking the rule. Plus, with some careful plan you might be able to hide it too. :D
-
Music is distracting to me but I do need headphones for noise cancelling the yackety yak of the people around me.
-
Pickman6566yJust do what a coworker of mine did. Start singing in the office. Keep your voice low and your songs civil. People will start to backpedal on that decision soon.
-
@Pickman I can't do that unfortunately. The only people I'd be annoying are my fellow Devs... We're closeted away in a tiny office, three Devs and two QA folks. And the rest of the team are just as pissed off as I am!

tommy15Right now someone at Google is coding something useless for us to laugh at on April Fools.
Company wide ban on headphones at desks, because how can people be working if they're listening to music? Never felt so miserable in my life.
Fuck fuckitty fuck, with a side order of bollocks. May the senior management of this tight arsed tin pot cowboy outfit of a company all sleep soundly at their desks until Doomsday while the rest of us keep them in business. See, I'm not bitter...
