Guys can you please explain why there are some nophp rants being posted? I don't know much about PHP but I'm currently learning it...

everyone has a language they love and they hate, the most used ones are often the target for both, if you want to learn a language, just learn it, and make your own opinions later
  • 3
It's becomming obsolete in the next 10 years.
  • 4
I feel like punching everyone who's bashing php... U got nothing better to do? Go code something in your beloved java.
  • 3
@heyheni thats what they said about bash 10 years ago
  • 0
@DarkMukke come on bash is just dead. Legacy code doesn't count
  • 0
Did you decide to learn php on your own? Was it a fair choice after you compared several languages?
  • 8
@DarkMukke it doesn't even matter if it'll die in 10 years.. why open endless rants and saying bad things about a language that is paying for people's homes and puts our food on the table? a language that allows young people to find that first job that is their way into the dev world.. a language with which so many sites you are using daily were built.

Screw this, it's just plain insulting, i thought this community was about supporting each other, not making you feel bad about the language you are working with.

Try to learn three languages in parallel, implementing the same tasks in all of them.
  • 2
@lig1 i used it on a daily basis, only 30% of my time..
    doesnt seem dead at all

btw do you know that if you do something on a linux server, in commandline, you are most likely using bash (or zsh wich is technacally still bash), not sure if you are just ignorant or plainly didn't know

@vortex some people pay for their homes selling drugs. Is it OK then?
They thing is a peace of shit like meth. Millions do it and we need to deal with that code after they decided to switch to Ruby.
  • 1
@lig1 some people do not have a choice in the language they use as @vortex already pointed out
  • 0
@DarkMukke hmmm... I use it a lot. But this is not programming. And that is just bash emulating sh. Most of the time you do not use specific bash commands.
  • 0
@DarkMukke bullshit. There is always a choice.
  • 0
@DarkMukke where is 90% came from?
  • 2
@lig1 so because 90% of the internet uses php or bash, but you don't see it, it is obsolete ?

yeh, that it indeed a fine example of ignorance
  • 1
@lig1 where does your 10 years come from ?
  • 2
Guys. There are a lot of technologies that made good or bad by their nature.
If you think everything is good you need to get some experience by looking into languages source.
Just read their code and than come back and say what do you think. Or at least you really should choose wisely the technology you are going to deal with next several years.
  • 1
    @DarkMukke that wasn't me
  • 2
i bet you've never used php for longer then 6 months on a daily basis..

regardless, i still think you fail to see @vortex point and for whatever reason have a deep hate for php, which is perfectly fine, but you should let people have their own choices and own opinions
  • 11
@DarkMukke well.. my eyes are open now to all my options, I'm going to stop programming in php and go sell drugs...why not.

Btw last time i checked (about a month ago) there were 5 jobs offers for ruby and hundreds in php (in my country).. so looks like i win.. at least for the next 10 years.

@vortex here have a cookie, because a ++ is just not enough for this comment xD
  • 1
@lig1 true! And mine is to tell you STFU!
  • 6
don't listen to the hate, php is pretty solid since 5.6 and with v7 it's here to stay for years to come. besides laravel is very fun too.

it's true that there is a lot of bad code out there, but with something with such a huge user base this is expected.

i'm not saying don't learn anything else, but it's a good skill to have.

@lig1 there is not a choice if the company you work for has all of its projects in one given language and you have to work with it.
  • 1
@leewilson86 why do you have to? You are a developer! You are free to code in any language for any company.
  • 6
@lig1 but what if the project I have been assigned is already written in PHP and I have to develop a new feature?

What happens if the project is regulated and I have limited scope in terms of languages to use due to regulations which I have I follow?

What happens if the server Architecture does not support the language I would prefer to use? Am I going to tell clients I need to rebuild their entire app to support this other infrastructure just because "I" want to develop in another language?

Yes I am a developer, and therefore my role is to "develop" solutions. It is also my role to follow rules and guidelines and to give appropriate advice as often as possible. Maybe if I had the luxury of writing every project from scratch I would choose a different language for each. However clients have budgets, companies have employees to pay, and businesses need to make a profit to keep people like us in jobs.

Think of the big picture before saying "oh just do it in whatever language"

Php used to suck, with version 4, that's 10 years ago, it's now a fully fledged language with a decent tooling and is nice to begin with, makes so many things easy. sure it has some quirks but nothing that outweighs its benefits
  • 2
@elgamine except the function consistency, but that's why we have IDE's xD
  • 1
To topic starter. Remember that anyone who advice you something could be yesterday graduated intern failing his current project because he is just dumb. Make important decisions in your life on your own.
  • 3
@lig1 developing cool shit is cool. Developing yourself is paramount, and you my friend are full of bugs. Stop being so insulting to fellow members..
  • 1
    @koukou don't take it personally:)

It's because people are sheep. They hear someone say it so then that is enough reason for them to hate it. Then they spew the same thing to other people in an endless cycle. There is nothing wrong with php which is why a vast majority of the web runs on it.

@itsmill3rtime as the saying goes: A bad workman blames his tools ;-)

PHP is fine! And only getting better in my opinion.
  • 1
@divil I wish PHP was a little more strict, maybe not as strict as Swift.
  • 1
@lig1 It is not that I'm trying to make a decision, I am just trying to understand the reason to the hate

Imagine you are a carpenter you have your favourite tool kit..and you get a job where you have to use some other toolkit, you know its a very popular toolkit but dont know much about it..you start working with it anyway..
Later you find its not same as your toolkit and you miss things and are annoyed by many..but it still has what you need to do your job..you just want to finish the job and start using your toolkit and dont want to work again with it..
but alas every other project has it..you start to hate it...and tell other carpenters you rather not work with it...
The toolkit will change no brand will sit still but your opinions dont...

At the end of the day if you are a good carpenter you can work with any toolkit if you know good carpenting..

Now change carpenter to developer and carpenting to development

    You have you answer..

@lig1 bash is not dead, in fact it was a rather large deal that bash shell is coming to Windows 10. it's still useful for piping outputs between programs.
  • 0
@jiraTicket bash is dead as a programming language. No one makes that monstrous installer scripts like Sun used to like to do in bash.
    Bash is powerful like shell:)
