@Yeah69 don't forget that Microsoft is the company that followed the "embrace, extend, and exterminate" strategy (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/...)
-
Yeah6916298y@NathanDoesDev probably the whole Linux Foundation forgot that, too. So they didn't investigate and check the conditions before accepting Microsoft in.
-
@Yeah69 you expect there to be a clause that says "Microsoft promises not to embrace, extend and exterminate Linux?"
I mean I'm not saying that they for sure will do that. But it is a bit odd of them to join the foundation for a directly competing OS.
I agree they won't try to exterminate Linux but I bet they will use their position to keep Linux as a server-only OS and slow it's growth to mainstream computer usage. -
Yeah6916298y@NathanDoesDev but they could like just reject the membership. If they wouldn't trust Microsoft, why should they accept? And I assume the people at the Linux Foundation are cautious about Microsoft, especially because of the past. I think the Linux people are not that naive to just invite the wolf into their house. Or do I have the wrong impression?
Also the best thing about Linux being open source is that anybody can watch the contributions. This makes it difficult to do mean stuff. -
skonteam9828yMicrosoft's server market is shrinking by the day, so they decided a change was needed and started porting it's dev environment to Linux ( SQL Server,.Net...) In an attempt to keep some market share, also they are ranked first in open source contributions because they are way past selling Windows for profit , as most big companies are, now it's cloud services and Data gathering.Welcome to the Data era .

Microsoft is now a member of the Linux Foundation.
While the dev community makes OS wars, the company and the foundation is making love. Take them as role models.
