@J4s0n if I gave someone a windows install DVD and a Linux install DVD. I'm willing to bet that the windows install would complete first.

@monolithicblob it could be said that your average Linux install is made for people who never go outside.
I mean no offence by the above statement as I am an sys admin as well as developer so I personally use which ever suits my needs -

@fitzsuperuser I agree with the op I gave a couple of users Linux mint to run VMware workstation host on so it had a smaller memory foot print. VMware weren't supporting the latest version of mint so I had to go back a couple of versions. Then my users had problems with laptops not suspending and restoring correctly, this even overheated on laptop as it was still running when the user put it into his laptop bag like he always does and Linux didn't suspend properly. Not to mention having to use the command line to change stuff because no GUI exists for the application. Linux has its uses but generally I don't have the time to fuck about. Also the two laptops I put Linux despite configuring the same behaved differently, graphics drivers behaving differently, mount points being different for extra drives. Quite like windows if I'm honest.

Honestly if you think that's 'cheating' or a bad thing, you're mental. I want to be able to turn my PC on and work.
Don't talk to me about your drivers not working because you use Linux and decided to change to X flavour of Linux because you were told it was 'better' than Windows. I see a lot of people on here who jumped on the 'Linux is better' bandwagon, and now they're all coming back. -

You turn away so many people when you do and that's just what Linux has done with the huge amount of distros not one can get it right ?
With windows the learning curve is... Oh that the internet button, oh that opens the apps menu
That's it... same with android is just as simple. iOS is simpler still
But nearly all variations involve command line and when it doesn't you still want to download skins and add ons because you don't get what you need from the start -

@drRoss please tell me you are kidding. It does not download drivers for you and it never did. The only thing it has is drivers for major hardware inside the installation. And it ends there.
Linux actually downloads needed drivers on some distros. Even as plug'n' play. Plus all the software you need. -
@sage I don't have an issue with the steep learning curve. My point(not issue) is that John who's 60 isn't going to want to learn Linux.
If Linux had not become so diverse with the flavours of OS offered and a more concerted effort to make a very decent offering instead of mediocre offerings Linux would be awesome
People would complain then that it's not diverse enough I know, but how many spin offs of Ubuntu are there when if everyone concentrated the fork efforts into making Ubuntu awesome. But you could argue that canonical should have sunk time into Debian instead of Ubuntu but I kind of like the divide that Ubuntu is more user friendly than Debian.
I run a few web servers on Debian so I'm not anti Linux. But seriously it's just a tool and the wrong tool being implemented is just as bad as having no tool
I know I'm using Linux generically and it's the kernel not the OS. -

Because nowadays major Linux distros are basically like Windows in those exact points.
I admit it is hard to choose from the plethora the right one, but in Fedora or Ubuntu you do not need command line ever if you are a basic user. -
@FitzSuperUser my point was that there is no learning curve for day-to-day tasks. Because it handles more or less like Windows.

@philcr I think a average computer user could complete a Ubuntu installation. And since a Ubuntu install needs half the time... Nope I don't think so. Also afterwards everything except windows office is ready to use... So nope.

@J4s0n just based on the user group I support I would suspect many of them couldn't install either. The group ranges from savvy home user to the guy who didn't know alt+tab changed applications.

I use debian for 95% of what I do, as it's the best tool for the job. On my laptop, running the same tasks on linux vs window, i'm at 20% cpu and 6-7gb memory. Windows gave me constant out of memory warnings and just closed my running apps. Windows has its uses, but for development for anything outside of Windows apps, linux is better.
Fuck, just to build with node-gyp on windows I need Visual Studio. Why the fuck is their c-compiler bundled with VS? I hate the interface, and it takes up such retarded amounts of disk space.
Also fucking IE, I will never forgive Microsoft for IE! -

@FitzSuperUser What i meant was that you should compare Windows to a Linux based distro, otherwise Linux is a kernel as is NT to Windows .

@yusijs actually you can install MS build tools as standalone version without installing VS, so this shouldn't be something to complain about
As being mainly a C/C++ developer, what makes Unix better? I can use GCC and clang as well and have the option to use the (IMO) best ide to develop, debug and with the great integration of Intel parallel studio also to profile my application in one single Ide

@benoliver999 that's great to hear, are your desktops part of an active directory domain? Just curious how samba works out for you guys on scale! I had issues setting up a member server running Ubuntu server, admittedly it's is now the least rebooted server but n our business and when I do need to takes less than 20 seconds to bounce

Just my personal opinion. I'm exactly the other way around. Windows never worked out for me. My parents and some friends also switched to Linux and since then they don't need help with computers anymore. No driver issues etc, it just works. Personally I freaking hate closed source software so that's why I'll never switch back and it just works for me but hey, if you like windows, everyone their own preferences, right!

@philcr We are admittedly a small team, so there's no DC. File server is a freenas box, email etc a Debian box.

@benoliver999 it's fine for a small team, but when you have real world legacy stuff to support, exchange server etc Linux doesn't integrate so well with minimal input
Linux OS's do work with the legacy stuff but I can ill afford the time to maintain -

Linux... Is shitty... Ok it just is. I've tried all kinds of variations and they all just... Urgh
Now I know... I know devs are meant to love it ... But compare it to windows
(Yes windows fucks up more) but when it works it works.
... Windows isn't perfect... But it doesn't try to be.
Linux has that feel of... Clearly made by a dev... It works consistently but doesn't take into account how people want to use something...
Linux is something you have to learn to love. And I'm sure I could.
But with windows it's intuitive it's straight forward
I feel like if I was to pick up windows having never used it... I would know how it works. I could at least use it go online and watch videos do the basics... In Linux ... No it's not as easy, sometimes not possible
An os you should just know how to do everything you want to do, and not have to download tonnes of shit to get it that way
