Guys... This is ... Actually currently a massive issue like huge.
They fucked up the usb c let me be clear... Engineering wise
If I remember correctly some on the new Mac book give out different amps 5 and 10? Weird... Right
But if you don't use the official apple cable you are likely to damage your device!
The specs of them are currently all over the place , it's actually really fucked up
I mean it's very likely people are going to damage their devices or damage the ports over a few months
Possible in certain circumstances the apple ports won't be a good idea with none apple devices
It's not the same as usb 2/3 era were you know your device will be fine if you use that port
Plus apple cables are a fortune
If needed I can provide links but it's not to hard to find yourself engadget talk about it -
@FitzSuperUser if you use cheap cables yes you can damage your devices. Apple implements the USB c spec correctly. This issue came up when Google came out with their USB c pixel Chromebook. You have to make sure you get cables that implement the spec correctly.

@DoctorDalek yes they have... But the spec on usb c is fucked up to be honest
I mean it's right... But the variations are crazy, the point being most won't know that the port they are putting it in with that cable could break that device because it can't handle that power
At the moment ... Usb c is a mess will be until the next generation
I mean apple have been replacing and brought the price down of their cables cause they were shocking people
It's all... A bit of a disaster -
@FitzSuperUser it's literally designed to allow for variable currents. Compare that to last gen where you had some ports supplying 800ma or 1a or 1.5a. USB C is designed to allow for multiple currents to account for all devices so it's, well, universal. I don't get your complaints saying the spec is a mess, while only giving one example where out of spec hardware could wreck a device (hint, it happens with USB B also)
-
@DoctorDalek @FitzSuperUser also on top of that, most devices will be okay as long as they are designed to only draw their maximum current. It's not like they're bumping up the supplied voltage or anything.

Everything should eventually be USB c- all devices and all phone chargers including the iPhone. I have so many connectors and convertors and chargers its stupid

Guys, why is everybody complaining about apple usb-c ports? Isn't that the future?
Wait four/five years and it will all be usb-c
I mean, 100% chances of inserting the drive in the computer at first attempt. Fucking rad!

usb-c
looking forward
