Didn't go to WWDC because of budget constraints. I spent entire week watching videos and reading about WWDC.
Server side swift will rule the internet one day!4 -
I have tried Facebook, plus, Twitter whatsapp and various other "social" platforms and they always end up being repetitive and boring. Unfortunately and with all due respect devrant has followed that trend and is becoming just as boring.
Nothing beats human interaction - it's just so much more enjoyable.5 -
Finally it was my turn to receive a call from the now infamous Indian "Windows Technical Support Department" from a spoofed out of service 1-888-425-6866 number. My wife and I are on vacation we had just gotten back from the beach and she was taking a shower so I had all the time in the world to play along with them. It is too long to type out but it was extremely entertaining especially the bits that happened after I finally informed them that I own a Mac. The final thing he told me on the phone before hanging up was to go fuck my sister and I felt I must have performed well to deserve that.6

I wish I had this guy as my calculus teacher in college. It was hell understanding the concepts because of language barriers.6

So I bought an expensive Bluetooth Arc mouse from Microsoft to use with my work pc which is an HP EliteBook running Windows 7 Pro. The HP installs the drivers but the mouse will not work come to find out later that model of HP pretty much does not work with any Bluetooth device. So to make sure the mouse is fine, I try it on my MacBook pro and in about 15 seconds it's up and running.
I have an Apple mouse already so I give the mouse to my wife and she has a Lenovo laptop running the latest Windows 10. Takes forever for the mouse to install and right after I get a driver error. To cut a long story short I had to install an app from the Windows store to make it work. 15 seconds on a Mac versus at least half an hour on Windows to install a Microsoft mouse.4 -
I need to run a cloud Linux vm. My need is limited to running tomcat and about 10 web services- that's it. What I would like is an easy to use Linux flavor with a nice UI.
I need to know what cloud service and what flavor of Linux. And please don't get snotty with me because I have run massive applications on Solaris, AIX and HPUX - I am over doing things in a shell.2 -
So today I inherited an iPhone app written for iPhones 3 & 4 in Objective-C.
I am facing two not so unique problems:
1. I hate Objective-C so I quickly converted it to Swift but as expected I created a tonne of errors and warnings that I am working through
2. The developer(s) didn't think it important enough to leave a solitary comment explaining what the hell they were doing.
So looking forward to a few weeks of swearing and getting myself all upset trying to get this app to work in a complete information black hole.3 -
Got a call last night at 2:37 am (Sunday morning) from an sap group that manages jobs informing me that some sap integration with our application was not working and I needed to look at it. At 4:00
Am I finally find out that all 47 sap production servers were undergoing maintenance and all jobs were disabled. So here was an sap group that had no idea all the servers they supported were being upgraded and I had to discover this for them. Took a lot of self control to remain professional and even keeled. -
So a typo brought down large swaths of S3. Programming is a merciless profession. No wonder I am stressed all the time.1

Just today I lost a lawsuit because my contract was written and signed in Nigeria and I sued them in the USA and I couldn't convince the judge it was fraud. I transformed the company implenting SAP and office365 and a WAN and many other projects. Worked nearly every single day 3 years in a row even during vacations, public holidays and holidays. Lost over 400k USD in lost benefits and wages that were in the contract but never paid. I feel absolutely devastated.
Unless you work for a US or European based company never ever work in Nigeria.5 -
SAP GUI developer interview
Questions:
1. Can you design sites for IE 6?
2. Do you hate HTML5?
3. Do you love website design from the 1990's?
If you answered yes to all 3, congratulations you are hired.3 -
So I do pay for all the software that I use if they request that I do. Cannot expect fellow devs to work their butts off to create good software that makes my job easier and not support their efforts. I paid $25 for Bootstrap Studio today and was more than happy to do so.
If you use software without supporting your fellow developers you should be ashamed of yourself.3 -
Just read through Chris Lattner's resume - made me depressed. Twenty years in IT and I have basically achieved naught.
If you wanna get depressed too please feel free.

Stephen Hawking has just under 70k followers on Twitter. Kim Kardashian has just under 50 million followers. This realization really pissed me off - most humans are just idiots.7

Had to do a change tonight - not once but twice my server secure login account was locked. And server security don't answer their pages. I couldn't even reverse my changes if my changes break something else.
My account has not been locked in over a year but happens twice in a 90 minute window. What are the chances? -
I learnt Swift in 2016. 2017 has to be the year I turn Swift pro.
Happy new year to all and may your code come to life and thrive. -
A very dear friend decided to teach his kids programming. He has six kids but he is only teaching 3 at the moment cause the other 3 are still too young. While I choose to start off my daughter with JavaScript he choose to start off his kids with C. His reasoning is its better to learn at that level to fully understand what is actually going on. And I find myself agreeing with him.13

Went to boarding school in England and our physics/maths teacher was a Cambridge graduate. Real bad sense of humor, probably took a bath once a month and wore the same suit all year. Skinny, glasses, clean shaven and ate Marmite and boiled eggs every day. Poster child for nerd world but boy did this guy help advance my math skills and love for physics.8

Weirdest coworker was at a tech support job I had when I just graduated from college. I was training this guy and he could listen in on my calls and my wife called and he heard the conversation (nothing there) and later he suggested I should encourage her to work in the phone sex industry cause she had a sexy voice. One time I saw pornography on his screen and with the supervisor's permission we did a search on his work desktop and found a lot of it - some that was really sick!2

I'm sorry but devrant is getting boring. People posting the same things over and over and now some product promos are creeping in. Please stop.3

Installed JDK 8 patch 111 in preparation for an upgrade to our application servers . The app installer requires patch 45 or above. Come to find out the app installer can only deal with a 2 digit patch number. Uninstalled JDK 8 patch 111 to install patch 92 only to find that patch 92 installer won't work because patch 111 has messed with the registry and didn't do a thorough cleanup during the uninstall.1
