Interviewer called me useless for reason that I am a self taught programmer and don't have a degree. She told me that I will have no future. Because self taught are just useless who who try to fit in the club.

This personally offend me so much. Yes, I'm self taught. At least I have a heart of learning rather than being arrogant ....

    @Frederick She is HR manager.
  • 4
    @rutee07 idk. If I'm not qualified they can just notify me instead of video call me just to tell me these.
  • 2
    @rutee07 Yea... I decided to review the company .. is bad... Really
  • 2
    Broooo! Next time hit back! You got nothing to lose!

    Or do you? Any seniors care to comment?
  • 1
    @Cyanide hit back? They will call the grasshopper on me....
  • 1
  • 1
    @Cyanide oh ... I misunderstood... I thought you want me to hit her physically. 😂
  • 3
    @johnmelodyme sheesh you have horrible luck! You had a shitty manager, asshole interviewers, especially this one who called you useless. She could’ve simply refused to interview you if the bottom line to her is having a degree. HR stands for human retards
  • 2
    She should go on a date with your former boss. I’m sure they’ll get along just fine. It would be the ultimate alliance of villains
  • 2
    @d-fanelli yea...I know right?

    * a self taught senior Dev walks into the room *

    Listen here you failure of a person, just because this wrench didn't finish school, didn't get the grades to sit at your desk and complain like a little bitch all day because someone made you fill in another form today, just remeber this wrenches job is to make you redundant, now who's not qualified to do their job around here?

    Oi @johnmelodyme let's go get a coffee and talk about that application she'll be filing in soon for you.

    No formal computing qualifications, senior developer in SMB with 10 years experience.

    Tell her to to stick her recruitment requirements up her arse.
  • 1
    Sounds like a real fun person to be around

    No but seriously, maintaining composure in those situations is key, because it didn't give them the satisfaction of feeling like they got to you, which is what they want. Fuck people like that, but never to their face, because they love that shit.

    @C0D4 He today is so weird...

    Interest and passion for programming is worth more than any educational degree. Fuck this person and that company. 🤬

    @Lensflare they also told me that their company is the best and top in Europe. (Usually in my country European country will not act this way , they have more strict procedure instead of insulting me.)
  • 3
    They don't teach anything in a comp sci degree that you can't learn on the internet. If she knew what she was talking about she'd know that.

    But hey, it's not like it's any great loss to you. If that's how they're hiring developers they have no idea what they're doing. You don't want to deal with that inevitable mess.
  • 0
    @M3m35terJ05h Wait~ they don't teach in college? I mean most people learn from online? with or without a degree?
  • 3
    @johnmelodyme They do teach. They're just not the only source for any information they teach. They're arguably not even the best source. It's like 50/50. Depends on your personal preference.

    And yeah most people have to supplement uni with their own study anyway. Uni doesn't cover everything and it would be impractical for them to try.

    @johnmelodyme 🤣🤣🤣OMG BEST COMPANY IN EUROPE! LMAO wtf you can’t fool a goat with that obvious bullshit! I’m sure the best company in Europe whatever the hell it is would afford better people than this trashy reptile
  • 1
    @d-fanelli I strongly agreed.
  • 2
    @iiii You confused "Is A" with "Has A" relationship. It's important to our Perls.
  • 2
    @johnmelodyme She learned nothing from Good Will Hunting. Ability to learn is what prevails not the method or papers.

    @hjk101 no, I don't think I had 🤔
  • 1
    I have a degree in Software Engineering and personally I feel like it was a waste of time.
    I mean it's nice to have it for better pay and chances in the job, but practically it's pretty much useless. The vast majority of what I have "learned" by studying was completely theoretical and could not be applied in practice. Or it was outdated within a year.
    Devs need to constantly learn new things anyway.
  • 1
    @Lensflare I see, I think I have wrong perception of people with degree must be smart.
  • 1
    A few examples of useless stuff done in uni:

    * "Coding" on paper.
    * Learning advanced math and proves
    * business and financial stuff (may be useful if you want to freelance)
    * complex algorithm theory
    * formal languages and grammars

    Some of that stuff may be useful for a specific kind of dev job but definitely not for regular devs.
  • 1
    @Lensflare Wait.. coding on paper , that sounds ancient where the card have to slot into the machine to punch the card?
  • 1
    @johnmelodyme that has nothing to do with punch cards.
    I did my degree long ago but coding on paper appears to be the practice even today.
    Some users have reported that here on devrant.
    It is as idiotic as it sounds: You are writing the code with a pen on a piece of paper. For example Java code.
  • 1
    @Lensflare write code on paper? Wait... What?
  • 0
    @Lensflare yes I'm the most technical person on my team... Everyone else has CS degrees...
  • 1
    @Lensflare I think that's interview practice or at least when they used to use whiteboards...

    Now we use online notepad
  • 2
    That recruiter is stupid and has no future, recruiters with that attitude are useless and get fired as soon as their are caught.

    Reality is you don't want to work in a company that hires people like that.
    So good riddance.
  • 2
    @mundo03 Yea, I agree to that.

    "i'm gonna stop you right there honey and ask you: who contacted who, begging them to take one of their job offers?"
