How can a person not have a surname?

Null?

@HitWRight judging by the name it looks like an indian name.. Some of us dont have surnames. Not sure about this case, but some south indians shun surnames because it usually indicates our caste etc..

People from Iceland also don’t have official surnames.

tl;dr: there's a good reason why many sites just ask for your email as user name. Everything else is incorrect in some way, and if you have a non-optional, fixed name field it'll fuck up someone's day.

Your tags are probably way off. Most likely this is a NULL stored in database column. It's not a Java null pointer exception.
Java it's one of the languages that does print actual "null" but saying it's Java is just an assumption, and as you have just proven assumptions are dangerous.
