Woke up this morning to Amazon charging me over $100 bucks for the web services I used at my Hackathon last month. What the hell, I thought the free tier covered that?

Clearly. I have no idea where these numbers are coming from...

My Google Cloud bill just hit me and I have never been this broke

Did you turn off the machine?? I know Azure will charge you an eye if you leave that shit running..

Nope, just did. But it wasn't being used. I thought AWS charged based on usage rather than server status...

Azure does as well, BUT it depends on what service. If you're using the ML studio for example, you're ok, because it only charges per executions. However, if you're using a virtual env and you leave that shit running (even if you're not using it) they'll drill you. So, yes, it depends on usage and depending on the service, make sure you turn it off. I don't use AWS much, but I'm sure it works the same.

@mantekillah It's cool. At least I got DevRant to blow off steam.

Maybe start a GoFundMe titled: "I screwed up on AWS and need a new laptop". Never know ;)

Email them and see if they will reduce the bill. I know someone that did something similar in Azure, he emailed MS and said he accidentally left it on and they let him off with it because they could see it wasn't actually used.

It was cool when I deactivated the EC2 instance and never looked at it again, after 2 months crazy bill arrives o.O It turns out that I had beanstalk configured to redeploy stuff when it went down... This time finished the EC2 instance and killed the beanstalk app :)

If you tell them you didn't use it and didn't know that you had to unsubscribe they might refund you. It happened to me and I got the refund. Amazon is pretty generous

They charged me $1 last month after I re-opened my account... there apparently was some old EBS on it and it can't be removed.... I opened a ticket but they were completely useless (maybe you can give that a try though, they may offer you a refund).

Well luckily my credit card was expired and I ain't giving them a new one.... at least for now...
