My s-q-l is a full extra syllable than MySequel. I'm a programmer, I strive for conciseness and efficiency. I aint got time for that extra syllable

    Some googled stuff:

"There's actually historic precedent for this pronunciation as the original db query language _was_ called SEQUEL (Structured English QUEry Language) by the IBM System R group that created it, but it was changed to SQL (Structured Query Language) for legal reasons: SQL.

So, the MySQL data manager ends up being called "My Sequel"."

@monolithicblob that is just plain wrong. As I wrote as comments on some other rants, e.g. this one: https://devrant.io/rants/398953/...
the original name was SEQUEL, as you say. This was, due to legal issues, change to SQL, but as older devs were used to calling it sequel they continued to do so which lead to the confusion, but SQL, or Structured Query Language is officially pronounced S Q L. However, that refers to the language, not various instances like Microsofts SQL server which is pronounced sequel, same as Oracles SQL. However, MySQL is officially pronounced S Q L, not sequel, but they don't mind you calling it sequel, as it says in the official documentation: "The official way to pronounce “MySQL” is “My Ess Que Ell” (not “my sequel”), but we do not mind if you pronounce it as “my sequel” or in some other localized way.", https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/...

I always thought it was my in the same way everything got prefixed with my in the 90s, like My Documents and MySpace.

But the daughter of the creator is called My. Second child Maria, hence MariaDB as the new implementation.

Anyway I pronounce it Mysicle (like popsicle), or MyCycle, or MySqueal. I like pissing of my pedantic coworkers.
