Windows should not exist.

Imagine what the world would look like if everyone were only using *nix like Os's everywhere.
How much technology could be more refined and advanced.

    Not that easy to say.
    Without windows and only *nix Os's a lot of general development would not have existed.
    Windows did/does things linux doesn't and vice versa. If the ideas were good, then they have copied it in their own kernel/OS.

    So really, what I mean is that competition drives innovation.

    @Geoxion
    They would just develop better stuff on unix like systems

    On the same note, it would be so much better if we banned olives because I don't like them so it must be that no one does, why do they even exist at this point

    @amrit

    In an alternate universe where Windows never existed, they would develop a very uaer friendly Unix-like OS.
    Everything could be so much better.

    @azuredivay
    Please elaborate. How is Windows any better than any existing, potential or a Unix-like OS in a universe where Windows never existed?

    >Inb4 nuh games and user friendliness
    If unix-like was the norm among end users there would be much more superior games and user-friendlieness than any Windows system in existence nowadays.

    @clovisIrex do you have any idea about what you just said. The whole fucking industry would crash. There would be no web development at all, considering the most major goal of the web is to have one universal application across all os's, but without it, everyone would go native, and websites are out of the picture. Without web development, native development is all that's left. Only few of the millions of programmers out there would have jobs, because not only are there less jobs to go around due to only one available platform, also because everyone knows one universal language, which means anyone where native development is not their choice, is screwed for life and should start applying for jobs in the fast food industry. Few platforms means little jobs, meaning that society (or at least programmers) would become just like Hollywood, where everyone either makes a lot of money or none at all.

    You seem not to ubderstand my statement.
    I didn't talk about Windows going down tommorow and replaced by Unix like os's. I talk about a 'what if' scenario where Windows never existed in the first place.

    I believe Windows has both good and bad things, but ultimately it is inferior in technological terns and engineering to unix like os's, and in my opinion the world would have been a better place without it.

    And web development will still exist, it will just be different. The web is firstly a platform to share information quickly and efficiently between people. It was never meant to host replacements for native applications accross platforms. Javascript is a great language which I like, but frankly it became too monstrous and out of control in recent times.

    If windows didn’t exist. You would not have the same drive behind the FOSS community, so who knows where Os’s would have ended up today.

    Windows for all it faults drove the tech industry forward. Not by itself but because people decided they wanted an alternative. If a non windows world existed... then windows would become the *nix of today and all the hate would be on *nix and Windows would be our dark lord and saviour.

    Imagine how fun it would be to get simple things like wifi and sound cards to work! Oh boy!

    You really underestimate Windows and it's developers. If Linux was this big on the Desktop there would much stuff that would embarrassing the community.
    Microsoft did many bad things and did many mistakes but you really need to overthink it. Unix is not per se a better system.

    Please take off your rose colored glasses.

    Please share with me the evidence to your claim that *nix systems are objectely better.

    @clovisIrex web development would not exist, it's meant as something that can be made once and used on all platforms, if you can do that with a more interactive, better looking and faster native app, and it still works on all platforms, then they'll chose than. Name me a website that was intended to only be used on one browser, on one os, on one type of computer.

    Erm...
    I think it would not change as much as for instance absence of x86 and RISC ARM's everywhere

    I think that if it's like you said and windows never existed in the first place, the only thing that would've happened is that someone else would've made the same thing with a different name.

    Windows became so popular because it filled a gap in the market, had it not done that, something else would have.

    @Fydrenak or would mac take over
  • 1
    @calmyourtities most likely not, Apple's strategy of only releasing software for their own hardware has repeatedly failed them in the long run in both the case of macOS and iOS, both of which have very small market shares when compared to Windows and Android respectively. In all likelyhood there would just be another proprietary piece of software to fill the need of hardware makers who didn't want to make their own OS as @Fydrenak said.
