"Fauna's free plan has been adjusted from 5GB to 1GB going forward"

huh? I thought "tech was eating the world" "cloud is everything" "things are getting more efficient"

so why the hell do all these cloud providers keep DECREASING the free tier. annoying as all hell

where's all the storage and compute going? fucking crypto?

each day the 🤡🌎🎪 grows stronger

It's going into the fucking big data.

Because everyone and their mother wants to have metric tons of tracking (despite many bring completely unable to do anything meaningful with it) because

    - mah targeted advertising!!1!
    - hoping some bigger ad company will pay them for it

Companies don't owe you free services. They keep the free tier as a way of converting customers into paid customers.

When they have enough conversions, they limit it down knowing that the customers will convert given their products are good.

@CoreFusionX i really hope this phase is starting to die

most corporates are too incompetant to understand or act on the data correctly anyway 🤷‍♂️

    It's more like:
    "money is eating the world"
    "money is everything"
    "things are getting more expensive"

Free tiers are only ever a buy in. They're not done for the good of the community or anything like that. You can bet your bottom dollar as soon as it's costing more revenue than its generating, it'll get cut.

Friendly reminder not to rely on freebies that don't follow standards. If EC2 or RDS free tier gets killed or reduced, I can just switch to GCP, Azure or whatever. Literally every hosting provider supports Linux machines and SQL. If Fauna free tier gets killed you get to either rewrite everything for a different query language or pay up.

All these things have never been sustainable in the first place and are finally getting the reality check. On top of that, while the price-per-unit has gone down, the demand has grown way faster (take YouTube: full HD videos consume ~4GB per hour of content which was $0.24 in 2010, 4k videos consume ~28GB per hour of content which is $0.45 today). The gap is even greater for network transfer: not only does the same content consume several times more data, there are also way more users requesting that content. And of course while cloud infrastructure for start-ups and small services is way cheaper than on-prem, it quickly outgrows the costs of on-prem infrastructure as the business grows and the hardware requirements become more sustained and predictable.

A lot of those businesses were funded by investment funds and shareholders who never gave a fuck about the actual product and business model as long as they got the money, and now they're desperately trying to "fix" their ignorance.

The current Explosion of data captures create a giant need for more storage, Disk can only store somuch data while being realtime access, and sooner than later new datacenters have to be build.

Most of it is redundant anyway. Deduplication would save the majority of the storage requirement.

IMHO all free tiers should die or be reduced to the bare minimum functionality.

Simple reason: Someone pays the price of "free".

Most of the time those who are no in the upper echelon of decision making like devs.

"We need to keep the free features to attract customers, but profit margin shrinks. Let's fire 10 % so profit margin is good". Yep. That's how it usually rolls.

Well, with more people getting access to internet, we gotta store the porn somewhere right

    @IntrusionCM

I'm awfully familiar with that situation.

In the end, it all comes down to the same thing.

Endless corporate greed. It's never enough.

I understand that responsibility must be paid. But not in a 100000:1 ratio.

So free tiers are, in concept, useful for landing clients, but it should never be an excuse to fire ("blue collar" workers) over margins.

    As adoption increases, incentive decreases

    its in the cloud!

    obviously the clouds are evaporating.
