xalez19377ysaying Visual Basic devs are not real devs is like saying serial killers are not humans.. you might wish it was true but you know it isn't
-
athlon173217y@xalez you can’t be human if you use VB for your job. It’s like surgeon using butter knife
-
athlon173217y@JS96 there is none. But I haven’t seen anyone saying “hey! Let’s do this great idea with VB”. It’s like calling yourself petrolhead while owning VW Golf. It’s like calling yourself a soldier while using pop gun.
I actually was programming in Visual Basic - it was my first programming language which I ever knew... And I was surprised how much I’ve been missing out until I’ve switched to C# -
JS96185347y@athlon this doesn’t make any sense. It’s like saying “why we’re not using PHP for developing apps?”... every language has its own purpose... VB.NET is very used to create management software.
-
JS96185347y@athlon VB.NET != VBA
Anyway, VB can be used to create UWP apps. Most of devs use C#, but it’s 100% equal. You can convert the entire code in just 1 click.
Why not to mention C# in your rant then? It’s the same.
Or any other language which is just not popular?
I just don’t understand how you can put VB at the same level of Batch and... HTML... -
athlon173217y@JS96 okay, I get it. I’m officially wrong (that’s a “suprise...”) about VB. But still - you need to be mad to use it for creating serious projects
-
JS96185347y@athlon someone could say the same about using JS for a Windows software, but electron is pretty popular.
In some cases it’s useful to use it, in others not. It depends what you need. For UWP apps it’s ok, for a big software, it isn’t. ;) -
@JS96 well said. I think it boils down to bandwaggon mentality really. There is nothing wrong with VB.NET other than the "eww vb" mentallity that comes from people just taking the opinions of others as their own which did the same. In no way shape or form have I ever seen c# as a viable alternative other than my familiarity with Java in which case I still shoot for VB just because it is so comfortable to code in. I want a language that lets me express solutions and it does the job well, so does c# but I much prefer vb
-
JS96185347y@athlon Do you need a very simple software to fetch data from a server and elaborate them quickly?
Good luck to do it in C++, you will lose 30 minutes just to set up the GUI.
In VB.NET I can create a very functional and stable software to do it in a few minutes.
There are a lot of examples on how VB.NET is good, because it makes very easy and fast the development process.
In many occasions I need to solve a very quick problem, and doing it in VB.NET requires just a few minutes.
The only reason to use C# over VB.NET, is if you don't want to learn a different (and very easy) syntax.
Of course it's still a .NET language, and for this reason if you need to create very complex software which uses particular OS capabilities, you require a more powerful language, like C++. But it's still a very legit and good object oriented language.
Try devRant unofficial UWP and let me know if it's bad just because I used VB.NET to develop it. -
JS96185347y@AleCx04 we can see the same problem when people talk about PHP... in theory the developer should be the "smarter" part of the society (they solve problems, etc., this applies also to other professions), but they still tend to believe stupid stereotypes.
-
athlon173217y@JS96 maybe it’s bloody preference, but I knew VB and I still prefer C#. I don’t say the program will run worse, but for me reading the code made with VB is painful. My eyes bleed, I wanna cut myself, I would prefer to drink bleach over that.
-
JS96185347y@athlon I understand it, but it's different saying "I don't like it" than "who likes it it's a noob/pseudo dev/wannabe dev". :P
You don't like it, a lot of people (and I) like it. :)
I also use C++, PHP, JS and Java, I'm not a "VB fanboy" and use it for everything.
You also said that Visual Basic developers is a "worse group" than "pseudo HTML devs"... it's a bit too much. -
athlon173217y@JS96 But.
I get it. You know, I use Gimp as my go to graphic tool. Some people argue that I should switch to Photoshop and using Gimp is a nonsense . But I love to stay with my stupidity 🙃
And I don’t really care what people say. If I did, I would never start coding -
athlon173217y@JS96 and hey! Everybody sometimes makes mistake and isn’t right. Am I right or am I right?
-
@JS96 nice, I expected the devrant UWP app to be C#. I like what you did with the fluent design implementation btw.

Someone posted a rant about pseudo HTML devs (I’m not gonna say who... @Alice). While she’s right I think there are two worse groups: Batch and Visual Basic wannabe devs
