@AleCx04 that's funny ^^
and sad and true at the same time.. I would like to believe people are not that superficial, but titles really help a first impression in business and as this post suggests, even for potential love interests. -
@Godisalie I don't think pushing students so they get better results equals embarassing them in front of their peers. There are other ways to motivate without being guilty of coddling anyone.
One reason her rant jumped out at me is that I used to teach at uni. I've caught plenty of cheaters and seen students trying to scrape by doing the bare minimum, but there was never a need to treat them like this. If there was reason to suspect someone of cheating, then that should be handled discretely. If someone's work was subpar, they should be confronted with their impending failure in private. -
@DivByZero true, when you put it that way.. ^^

A FEMALE IT prof playing the 'girls-can't-code' card? That's... pretty rough! 😕
Now, I'm not one to jump in the face of every discriminatory remark against female coders that I've had to deal with while working in this field, but still, other women joining right in is like them hitting the self destruct button just because it's nice, red and shiny.. (Hope that makes sense XD)
I hope she didn't actually say something along those lines, did she? Telling you you must have cheated 'because girl!' ? -
Subscribing for updates as well.
I also got lucky and got assigned a great mentor from day one when I started out as new employee. He left the company less than a year after, but left me with a solid base to build on. Years later, I get to mentor interns in turn, and still, for me, the learning never stops!
With an I-know-everything attitude, all you're really hurting is yourself.. -
Really? It looks pretty packed from where I'm sitting.
Maybe it's coz they moved all the fun stuff to gamescom.. -
... don't certain parts get...uhm.. well, cold? After a while? I dunno.. XD
-
In short, no.
We use Balsamiq, maaaaybe photoshop now that we have a colleague who makes goodlooking mocks within a reasonable timeframe (hour tops), and that's it.
I sometimes jot down concepts by hand on paper or board, then take a quick picture to upload to knowledge base if its worth it. Everything else just takes too much time, specially if clients change their minds.
But then, maybe other companies, other projects, work differently..? -
And then there's places like devrant. Cheer up, there's hope for us yet ;)

I'm not sure about when to call someone a 'fake' dev, or if I've ever even encountered one? I imagine someone pretending to be a dev would be quickly found out through conversation or by looking at their code?
As for your html5 example, isn't that normal starting out? I've had plenty of students who thought themselves programmers/hackers barely having printed their first 'hello world', but that's ok (they discovered they were oh so wrong very quickly..^^). Doesn't mean someone is fake when they're just starting out, or not very familiar with deeper concepts yet... -
Hm.. We use jira (issue tracker) and bitbucket (version control) for this. Management can see exactly how much work time the team has put into each issue and commits are automatically linked to, no matter what branch they are in.

Death Note.

This. I would absolutely love using this answer in an interview.^^
I've yet to encounter the question though. Somehow, interviewers only ever seem to ask what I do to maintain a "healthy life-work balance". -
Errrr...
Dictionary definition of computer, electronic device (box) capable of accepting input (typed text, swipe, click, picture) processing (doing something invisible with) that input, running programs (apps) and producing output (more text, pictures and pokemon)...? Dunno..?^^ -
@BassClefBuddha not at all. Eat as you like. Wear what you like. I just don't get paid enough to listen to someone proclaim their dietary habits and what not all day long.. ^^
-
@theImposter really? Admittedly I've thought about that myself sometimes, but it just seems so much work going through all that time again.
Plus I really look forward to the incredulous faces of future grandchildren when I tell them yes, I am older than google, no, I did not have facebook or smartphones growing up and imagine this: there was a time when "e-books" were just called books and you did not need a charger to read them.. -
Tea drinker here! :D Grammar looks fine to me.
-
Sadly, just because a new year starts doesn't mean the dying ends..
-
++ for batman duckie!
-
Casual is fine as long as there aren't any clients coming in. Devs are seen as an eccentric bunch anyway (note I didn't use the word 'weird' here ;)), so it doesn't bother most colleagues if we show up in jeans and hoodies..
-
Francis! ;)
-
@sylar hmm, tldr, it depends on the applicant. If the demo projects work but code isn't clean, well documented, best practice etc., then I would assume it's easier to mould someone fresh out of college (who also has proven they can persevere in pursuing a goal) into a good programmer, than someone who has experience but has been doing things 'wrong' for years.
-
No, though it usually doesn't hurt if you do.
The company I work at cares about how I work and learn, not about my degree (though they pay me more than some of my colleagues who don't have one..).
I've also interviewed once with a company who didn't accept my degree as good enough, but I knew very quickly that they were not a fit for me either. -
Good luck, don't stress ;)
-
@h3ll @Charmgoggles thanks!^^
-
... that... actually works.. so sad *longface*.
-
I would love that! "Here, create something for us, just go crazy! The words 'costs' and 'budget' do not reside in our vocabulary.."
^^ -
I did this one time when I had to refactor some legacy code to visualize the impact it had on number of lines. Took days, but ended up with a class consisting of 300 lines code, and 1200+ lines commented out below. That moment I got to delete them and commit the clean file was rather satisfying..

@d4ng3r0u5 yes, there is..
-
Well done and congrats!
