How are we feeling about the new Ryzen lineup for workstations that can do a bit of gaming on the side?
I'm so looking to go back to team red, but I don't know how beneficial the no of cores Ryzen provides is for compiling, static analysis and other dev tasks.
Anyone have experience with Ryzen for dev'ing?4 -
!rant, but self flaggelation.
Been 3 weeks with my new company.
They are M$ shop, so got the Surface Book and top specced base.
And today I spilled coffee on it 😱
Granted, I had this coming. Over the years I've had many laptops, and put them in all sorts of dangerous situations. But of course it happens now to embarrass me at the new company.
Does anyone have any experience with surface service or returning, and cost? 💸4 -
People will always ask us to fix their computer :/
Had a meeting with IT-director of our client.
Me: Yes, with our solution you will be sure that the details of all your 17.500 employees will be stored and accessible for all required third party systems. We will have a 6 month preliminary schedule and it will cost..
Random: Excuse me!
Random employee interrupts and has actually stepped into the meeting room.
Random: Can you take a look at my computer? Something is wrong.
IT-director: Is there noone else who can look at this?
Random: But it was working a minute ago. It probably will be a quick fix?
IT-director looks at me like "what even is this?"
IT-director: Go down to the 12th and talk to IT there, we're having a meeting here.
Random: I thought you guys who are so good with computers could fix this in a jiffy!
Me: Burning inside
IT-director: Just leave us, please.
Random leaves.
IT-director looks at me and I look knowingly back. We are both sad for a moment. Then we continue.9 -
WHAT FUCKING PAYMENT PROVIDER SENDS ALL THEIR TECHNICAL STAFF ON VACATION?!?!?
Leaving customer service to tell me to "wait until they get back... In three weeks"
Unbelievable, I'm actually thinking there are laws and regulations about this if you are providing money handling services, but the sheer stupidity in itself!!2 -
A bit late for wk61 but here goes:
Does anyone have any advice for an older dev (just turned 50) during job hunting?
One of the devs on my current project was let go some years a go, and hasn't found a new job yet.
He keeps applying to positions, but keeps getting rejected and being told "we went with another candidate".
Choosing the young buck who will leave in a year over a older dev who still can contribute for ten years seems like the most common descicion.
I hired him on the current project I'm doing for a client, which is on iOS, and I've thought him swift and the general process of development on ios. And he's taking to it really well :)
I hope this will better his chances, but the current client won't have the resources to hire someone full time now.6 -
Always deliver the goods.
Even if who you work for are idiots, and the product is useless. You never know who will see what you've done.
- I did a six-month underpaid project for ShittyCompany.
- Strived to write it nice and clean with unit tests and good(barely) documentation.
- Got a call up a year later from a consultancy company who integrated with the application I wrote. Now I work for them, and it's as close to my dream job as I could hope for.1 -
Not a rant but shout out to Kirupa for his falling snow in JS.
