Who are the people who are pushing for phones, laptops and desktops to be even thinner? Do they actually exist?! Or are that mythical creatures invented by Apple engineers so they can get paid to invent new stuff?

"Yeah, we need to invent a new keyboard design as customers are complaining how fat our pro laptops are."

I don't think I've looked at a laptop built in the last decade and wondered how I'll carry it with my tiny frame.

Just give me a Mac Pro that is a solid chunk of aluminum with a removable drive and access to the RAM. It'll look fine and it's going to sit quietly on my desk. I promise not to move it without hiring at least two men with appropriate safety equipment.

I want someone to stand up at an Apple keynote and say, "We made this thicker---you're welcome."

Imagine the space that has been removed thelast 5 years not to be removed but replaced with battery...

Only charging once a week :D

On the plus side, they might remove the touch bar as excess girth.

@Alice. Do these videos explain the presenter's reasoning? Are they really, really small people---e.g. toddlers? Or are they interior designers who find the size aesthetically offensive?

@platypus the touchbar implements more functionality in a smaller space, they would replace the keyboard with the touchboard to have more space.

@codex404 You know they'll end up removing the whole keyboard and using Siri. Oh, wait, iPad. But then they'll remove the screen and speakers and we'll have a little cube---no wafer---that we talk to with headphones (BT) on. Some people will think that's too fat though, so it'll become a pinhead that we lose all the time and have to buy AppleCare to replace.

When my office unboxed our test macbook pro 2017 model my coworkers actually complained about the weight. It was fine to me, i have never bitched about weight. And this is coming from someone that had to march with 60 pounds in a big ass rucksack plus 30 lbs of combat gear not including the weapon(which due to my glorious luck was a m240g which weighed approx 25 lbs)

Did they say what it was about the weight that upset them. Or was it just "Fuck gravity and all it represents"?

I just bought a new laptop. It's only 10" or so, only 1or 2 lbs. It's totally weak (1.1ghz, 2gb non upgradeable ram, 32 gb flash), and in general it sucks. But it's small, and especially when. I'm traveling, that's THE most important thing.

So I guess I'm one of those people? To the point where I bought an outdated and low powered PC for no other reason than it's thin and small and travel ready.

@deadPix3l If the laptop came in a version that was identical, including price, but one was 0.5kg heavier, but with better processor/RAM would you have bought the lighter one?
  • 1
@platypus that processor must weighmore then 0.5kg then xD

I'm assuming 0.4kg for the additional RAM. 😄

I just have one thing to say.
I have the best cellphone in the market (xiaomi Mi a1), and It will be the first one with android pistachio.
It's so good that xiaomi Mi a2 has the same hardware (plus a more expensive version with 6gb ram). The 4gb is exactly the same...
Resuming, all turns arround money, even the best cell phone (features VS price) is released again exactly with other name just to get a little more money...
What sells its what is made, and fuking dumb shits who pay 1000 €/$ for the brand, who could pay 250$ for the same or better are the ones fuking the market.
If companies doesn't need to spend more to sell hight, why would they?

@platypus honestly, I probably wouldn't have. I bought it for defcon, where I'm going to be walking around with it all day, for several days. So most importantly, it's small and light. And if that means it's a bit slower (within reason) then that's how it's gotta be.

Of course the caveat is I don't need it to be powerful in this instance. I really just need vim, git, python, and curl to run decently. Probably won't even use X11. So speed is not a concern for this one at least.
