    100% agnostic

I‘m an atheist. Agnostics may be technically more correct but by the logic of agnostics, they can‘t claim that Santa Clause or unicorns do not exist. For me, the god of most religions is not less rediculous than Santa or unicorns, so I am not agnostic about that. I am an atheist. I could talk about that the whole day 😁

I pray to God, Allah, the Universe, the holy virgin, guardian angels, guiding spirits and Jesus Christ, almost on a daily basis. And for some reason, there have been situations that give the impression that some of my prayers have in fact been answered. I don't know if it was answered by a god, spirit or it was just the universe rearranging its energy on quantum level, but sometimes I truly got what I asked for.

I also had some very scary and strange experiences, of which one was witnessed by an ex girlfriend. For me, this was THE confirmation I needed to know that there's more between heaven and earth. What that actually is, I don't know and probably never will know, so I address anything that works for me in my prayers or wishes.

I don't see a point in the major religions and since I was a kid the bible seemed like a fairytale book to me just as any other. I'm annoyed at the religious people standing everywhere in the city next to homeless people promoting their views.
I like the Ideas behind wicca. I am not babtised and happy about it. I don't think I would ever be comfortable practising any religion.
I'm not against it, you do you as long as it is not pushed on others and as long as you do not harm anyone in the name of religion.

I do like the idea of ghosts, spirits and other creatures alike. And magic in general. I just have an issue what humans have made out of religion by now.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the one true God.

The northern part of my country which has about 90% Muslim. The southern part is divided into 3. The SE and SS is like 98% Christian and the SW is mixed by roughly 60-40 Muslim-Christian. Except the North that seems to be quite extreme, the other part of the country has one of the best religious tolerance in the world. But then we have LOTs of tribal issues..lol

Atheist. Baptised and all, but never saw the point, then when I grew up, I decided "fuck this shit". In science we trust, physics is my only "religion".

Show me peer reviewed papers, etc. I could change my opinion after that, but at that point it would no longer be a religion, but science, so it's all good.

Fuck organized religion in their holy books.

I am ok with belief or disbelief, just refrain from asking me to pick an allegiance. Started out an atheist, but finding a respect for what some religions have contributed to our species. It's not a perfect record, for sure.

Still having trouble with: in the beginning there was nothing, and then nothing exploded. Every origin story, religious or science based, seems to end up as a "turtles all the way down" type explanation.
  • 2
@funkyboss in scientific exploration, there is no "there was nothing". We don't know what was then. I mean, there, because time is not a primary value, it flows differently depending on local speed. The faster you move, the slower the time flow is, ultimately with speed of light, the time doesn't flow.
One of the theories is that the matter was condensed as in a black hole. So condensed, that intramolecular forces kicked in overcoming gravity and caused the expansion, the big bang.

Children are born without religion or belief structure. They are brainwashed as children into believing a certain way just as there parents were. The child is fully convinced in the specific religions book of rules and backward philosophies. The child grows to adult and does not question their beliefs as the child abuse was so powerful. A number however manage to break free and seek answers beyond the respective holy books. Religion can only survive by the brainwashing of innocent minds. It is like a peodo grooming their victims. Religious indoctrination should be seen as a crime. Unfortunately there are few support groups for victims of religious indoctrination. Knowledge is freedom.

    @Floydian what how?
  • 2
@helloworld exactly. It‘s funny how many religious people claiming the truth of their religion referring to the amazing number of members as a "proof" (millions of people can't be wrong, right?). But failing to understand that the numbers are mostly explained by parents brainwashing their children. And if it's not the parents, then it's the society. This explains why religions are separated into or related to geographic regions.

I believe religions are the ancient idealogy just like today idealogy, Democracy, Communism and etc. I would say they were necessary and still plays important roles to keep ppl together.

We, humans always have to believe something in common to be united. Religion filled that role before, now side by side with nationalism.

Sometimes I wonder if ppl in the future would also worship today idealogy structures like most of us are worshipping to ancient structures now.

If you love to read those kind of things, I highly recommend reading Homo Sepians book.

@mt3o I have heard and often read many of the theories. I have yet to hear or read one that is satisfactory to the question, what was the primary mover/creator. Often, they get to A starting point and not THE starting point, to my untrained sensibilities. I am not a theist, and I would ask for the same proof for a creation story...where did God come from?

In your example, there was a black hole. Black holes are made of matter which has mass. Perhaps the black hole pinched itself off from another universe, but that only gets us so far toward an answer.

Unless there is a flaw in effects having causes, we have much work to do.
  • 2
@funkyboss scientific approach doesn't have all the answers. It's not about having the answers.
I wrote "as in black hole" to express similarities, but not that they're was a black hole. Science doesn't know. Yet. Contrary to religion having all the answers.
Science is about right to ask questions while religion is about having the answers.
To show you a nice example, Einstein and other physicists responsible for quantum physics had problem in 'believing' in the quantum physics. Einstein said that God don't play dice. But what they did - was kicking the old model and replacing it with new one, like replacing one religion with another.
Science allows to ask questions "what if the world is different than we think it is", with religion is otherwise. You are not allowed to ask "what was before God". God was always there, end of story.
    ---
There is such thing like atheistic religion, for example buddhism rejects ideas of gods, so it's ateistic, but it's still a religion.

@mt3o good points. I think we agree.

Here is the big however: pop science kinda acts like they have it all figured out, and pop culture eats it up, to the point that folks can be irrationally caustic to those who remain unaffiliated. This goes both ways, of course.

I think that scientist have become less scientific in the last few decades. The peer review process seems to have a few holes in it, no? Funding influences outcomes, and that cannot be good if truth is a desired outcome. Maybe I am being pessimistic. As an untrained but interested party, I find that it is required to be a bit more critical these days. Perhaps I always should have been.

@funkyboss you clearly see the flaws, but you skip mechanisms that with against the flaws. Look at the broader picture. Even if a dozen of researches were funded, after some time the funding will end. The same stuff is researched over and over and finally it will be debunked.
Regarding sponsored material, look at the research approach at stem cell research funded by catholic church. They try to take results but noone can replicate their results, in fact debunking it.

I remember having a presentation about atheism in school as part of religion class. We showed a video of Richard Dawkins. He said in that interview that forcing a religion onto children is in a way mentally abuse. Since you take the right away from them to freely choose a religion and that being baptised might be against what they choose later on and therefore negatively impact them.
Ofc this is highly debateable but it lit up some interesting discussions within the class. For like, 4hours.
Teacher came to us after and said he never thought the class can be so active. Lol. Fun times.

Oh and once the teacher invited a priest over for us to dicuss stuff. Priest and atheists had more common world views then priest and the religious kids. Also fun times.xD
