Fucking Apples hold my bananas! Collegue and me see our naïve thought refuted that a commercial vendor, most valuable company would create an OS that is not as split and fucked up as Linux distros.
It is hard even where to begin, so deep is the shitfest they are putting developers through with Mojave and Catalina.
Our testers weren't hardly able to install Catalina beta 6-7. Behavior of kernel extension and full disk access varying on a daily basis. Fixing these bugs is like nailing a pudding to the wall.
Makes me wanna quit software. Whom should you trust if even your OS is flaky as hell?

@torbuntu part of the problem is targeting too many distros. Like from RHEL 5 *cough* to the newest Fedora and Ubuntu. Fun trying to keep your binaries compatible.

Appimage was considered... But we need some daemon processes, too - and RHEL 5 shit

I can run 15 year old binaries on my Windows machine without a problem. Just saying

@12bitfloat but can you use your 15 year old machine as build machine or would you dare to?

It's actually similar to what we do when we build on a 12yr old OS who's still receiving its updates for OpenSSL 0.9.8.

(about a year ago was impressed I could still compile and run some 20 year old Delphi projects with Lazarus)

My machine is modern. It can run modern binaries and old binaries, because it's just windows

@12bitfloat same on Linux. glibc is usually upwards compatible. The hurdle begins if you wanted to compile a binary on your new system that still runs on the old OS (let's say Win7 or even XP - heard our Win guys had quite some hardships and are happy XP is finally off the list).

Newer macOS SDK's also for example only support as far back as MacOS 10.12 (3 years!).

I feel ya bro. The goofy ass file protection system that compounds the major problems with general unix file permissions and macOS stability... Ice cold gin martinis help ;-)
