The story of Hurd is a really sad one.

Microkernels would even downgrade a 0-day RCE in the network driver from "full pwnage" to "just a DoS". But the implicit security gain by moving most of the "kernel" and all the drivers to userland comes with the cost of decreased performance because of added communication overhead.
Performance was and still is way more important than security. So all modern mainstream kernels are monoliths.

And maybe some kind of BoatSimulator.

Oh, also instead of force-installing new features during shutdown, it should remove a random program during boot.
