While SSDs don't fail too often, they still fail. So I'm guessing Apple thought differently than what conventional wisdom says "not to solder SSDs to the logic board". What else is new?

Probably to make it thinner. Haven't you heard? Computers and phones are now fashion accessories.

@NateTDenlinger SSD's have write leveling. You can only write to them so many times before it's buggered.

flag020318yBefore the onboard storage, those MacBooks were actually quite good laptops for what it's worth. They were current gen and we're expandable. I still know people who are happy with their 2011 and 2012 models.
