Confession: I am not a dev, I actually work on an IT helpdesk telling people how to turn on their PC's everyday.
It's soul destroying!!

My boyfriend is an Apple dev though, and I only joined DevRant to see if it would help me understand what he talks about 24/7...
I have very basic coding knowledge but still find this all so fascinating!
You guys are so smart, and can literally create anything in the blink of an eye.
Why are you guys generally so very under appreciated??
You also have a fantastic sense of humour! Haven't laughed at so many nerd-jokes in years!

Loving DevRant so far!
Keep up the great work! :)

    @Number0 splashing the ink on anybody's face is more fun than getting away from a fire cracker XD

    @Number0 No product = No bugs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Welcome! I don't actually work as a dev either but I do a lot of scripting and SQL admin tasks I only actually code in my free time but the people here are pretty cool!

    Oh, stop it

    I'm also IT Help desk, but I know the basics about a few languages. I hear you; helping people with minor problems every day is pretty bland, but my co-worker and some of my customers make it better.

    Thanks for letting me not be the only one!!

    @Number0 respect! 👊🏽

    Welcome to devRant!

    @thewalker wow you're welcoming yourself, nice

    @sam9669 lol, still figuring out how stuff works.

    @Number0 You do know that you can learn it to right?

    For some reason people always think you need to have a high affinity with it or have experience as a child or something. But just like with anything else, its just that you want to learn it.

    There are plenty of stories here on devrant that tell tales of people that have a job and don't like, then find coding and learn it and then get a job for coding. Im sure your bf would be thrilled to teach you.

    Also not a dev... Last progs I made was always to give away to the local community.. Still, I feel at home here...

    @RodrigoF
    that's all that counts imho.
    you don't need to be a dev to enjoy this kind of humor/ranting/whatever :)

    @velvetear Thanks :p Its hard when there's almost no nerds at my work place... Only things I can talk with them is sex, sex, sex, cars and football (socker)... Like... made a program for work that we all could use.... I actually use it almost everyday (I work with a CNC machine, its nice to have all the parameters at hand and calculators for weight and tool speeds), I tried to share it and was teased for making the program... like... WTF? Being teased for knowing something different... So sad.

    @RodrigoF
    i know exactly what you mean - almost nobody of my friends or family members has an affinity for dev stuff, or even basic computer knowledge (some gamers but... yeah).
    but that's what devrant is for so keep your head up!

    You may think we're clever but sometimes I'll spend like 20 mins trying and failing to print something and that's when people like your are a god send!!
  • 2
    Oh Mark I don't think I'm clever or smart... Just seams that almost everyone else is dumb and proud of it... Like... Trying to talk about something interesting else then sports or sex and I'm teased...

    I'm always treated as the "Family IT department" even though I clearly hate doing it, and didn't even go to school for the nonsense I'm asked to do. Could never work at a help desk in my life, props to you for surviving ;D

    @Number0 I don't think any of us were devs until we were, so you can learn too, and don't be shy of asking any questions we are here to help, whatever you decide I'm glad you joined welcome

    Welcome to devRant, where you can enlighten yourself with humorous intellectuals!

    P.S. I'm new here too, but it seems like it's kinda disliked to say something like "...can literally create anything in the blink of an eye.." because I mean a quality product usually takes time to make, no? Notwithstanding all those crazy client stories you hear where something is expected to "not take more than 5 minutes" ughhh sounds like hell everytime

    You. I like you.

    The reason why you joined is super sweet! Everyone that I've had the pleasure of interacting with on here is either hilarious, sweet, from an interesting point of view....etc. All good - enjoy and welcome 😃

    @furqaanshamsi yeah, I mean, it takes a long time to make things look pretty and debug it all, but tell devs that you need X product and they'll have the basics whipped up in an instant! Its brilliant.
    I tried and failed to learn it years ago so just have so much respect! :)

    @number0 @riderexmachina

    I'm IT Support too, though I've been secondered into Dev work for service now. Love it.

    "you all can create anything at the blink of an eye."

    Haaaa.....

    @DevMaterial lol!
    Yeah i worded that wrong.... But still, y'all are talented!

    The appreciation melts my heart 😂

    @number0 so yound and so naive. Us? Smart? Great humor? We disguise it well. It's despair. And working with stuff most people think they could also do easily, if they tried, but dont because they think they're smarter than us (mostly designers).

    Thank you so much. It is nice that someone nondev understands.
