I have nothing wrong with being frequently asked what I am majoring in. However, I am going for COMPUTER SCIENCE not FUCKING IT. Please for the love of fuck stop suggesting I try to get a job with some shitty company as an IT guy. I have no interest in being an IT guy. I want to fucking code shit, not fix your shit and help you do basic shit that you're too fucking incompetent to figure out.

    Omg so true, I am a webdeveloper. Whenever I am with friends who are not technical they are always saying that im in IT. Whenever I'm at a houseparty with them and the box stops working they call me "the IT guy" and after I literally turn it on and off again (this really happend) they start saying things like: "I knew you could do it because you are the IT guy".

    Thanks for this topic I never thought about buttrape-ingly (it literally makes my anus bleed) this shit is.

    @NoMaDhOoK I hate the thought of waking up every morning and having to fix what some highly incompetent people fuck up. It makes me sick to my stomach, honestly. (The only people I have sympathy towards are elderly people because they're just trying to keep up with the times).

    @japsel Omg πŸ˜‚ Why is it so fucking hard for people to think and try unplugging and plugging it back in? Like ffs it's the 21st century and people still can't comprehend this?
  • 2
    @jhh2450 I feel mostly sad because they actually started clapping there hands after. Society is going to shit:(

    @japsel Computer skills should be like a 6th sense at this point. Technology is rapidly growing, and it's time people adapt to it.

    I was talking to a friend about how I'd like to be a Web dev when I graduate college/university, and he asked me to help him with an assignment, which was to make a website. So I said sure, because I knew he wouldn't give a shit how I made it look. Turns out the assignment involved him using Google Sites. I was like "sorry dude can't help ya. I make sites with code." Like come on dude. I was making sites using Weebly and those type of sites when I was like 10. (The school blocked all the good game sites, so I made one with all the flash games on it.) The "I'm not good with computers" doesn't cut it anymore, especially since there's a lot of help to learn computers from the most basic of levels.

    Preach brother. I've noticed that there are two outcomes to telling someone you have/are pursuing a CS education. The IT guy bullshit and or the complete cessation of the conversation.
  • 1
    @ctmalloy I'd say there's a third option of "Can you hack *social media account*" or "I've got the next *generic billion dollar app/site*, can you code it?" But those definitely quality as cessation of the conversation.

    πŸ˜‚ I think we covered the if then else if else of the CS degree convo @jhh2450
  • 2
    @ctmalloy True πŸ˜‚.

    I think I'm going to get a shirt made that says "Yes, I'm a computer science major. No, I can't hack your Facebook, fix your computer, or code you an app." And in a small print maybe have "Please just fuck off."
  • 2
    @jhh2450 Or a shirt with: Yes I'll hack facebook, fix a computer and build your app. But for $x/h.

    Your freelance hourprice will honestly scare people the fuck off. Atleast my friends always poop their pants when I tell then my hourly rate.

    @japsel Ooh that's a good one. Maybe I'll get both
  • 1
    @jhh2450 wear your idea over mine, when they ask you if you really wont help take off the top shirt. They be running:)
  • 1
    @japsel Or have some business cards made with your idea. It gets hotter than the pits of hell where I live, so two shirts is dreadful.
  • 1
    @jhh2450 Suck it up!

    No honestly, business cards are probably a bit more comfy.

    @jhh2450 one shirt in this hell is too much

    Best rant. When you go into programming as a career, especially the more complicated side that you can't explain to 'normies', you become Mr. IT
  • 1
    @TheVariant When asked what my career is, I'll just say I make software, apps, games, websites (whatever it is at the time). Make as dumbed down as possible.

    Though not all non-IT/CS people are completely ignorant to the subject. Actually met a pharmacy student who knows knows JavaScript and uses Linux as his main OS. 10/10 dude lol

    @jhh2450 Couldn't agree more. It's very quickly approaching the point where being computer literate is going to be analogous to how being literate was 200 years ago.

    As a currently unemployed game designer/developer with experience from AAA game development and indie game development both, I can relate. My relatives keep giving me "helpful" tips and encouragement to apply for random IT jobs. Not only am I not technically qualified for many of these IT jobs, I don't WANT a fucking IT job, I want to make games. If you want to be helpful and forward me info on job openings, then forward me fucking job openings in the game development industry, k? Thx. 😠

    My dad was against me studying computer engineering because he thought the only job I was going to be able to get was installing antivirus and formatting pcs...

    @japsel Just refuse to do anything, for example while I was a teen I got into Linux and my parents constantly asked me how to do even the simplest stuff, so O just started saying "I know Linux not windows"

    And this here is a real problem I have as a programmer and doing cs.its almost like any one of my family members want to call me useless if I don't know how to fix their printer and question my going to university for a cs degree ,(even distant ones now) start calling me because they can't print anymore or Google Chrome isn't opening on their fucking computer running Windows xp.i don't know if i like helping people.but if you make an effort to fix your problem yourself first,i won't mind as much helping.but it seems that they have lost their damn ability to help themselves before they call me to fix their shitty problems.

    @jhh2450 I want that shirt so badly

    @zmzmuazzam98 I dare someone to question my degree. I'll flip shit on them and show them why I don't fix their crappy ass hardware.
