Wack61957yWhat we (people working at it department) got a call from some marketing whatsoever trying to sell us some stupid software for the company where I first worked at, we had a game of throwing them out of their concept by asking "hard" questions about what the software can or can't do (while googeling that stuff in colective) and school them when they where wrong. You basically got a point for a wrong answer and one for every 5 min keeping them busy.
So when that happens to you the next time, try to stay calm and ask innocently questions and then all of a suddent ask them aubout "transactional" memmory, or what SSD m.2 standart they suport and such stuff. -
I know that I would be slightly taken back if I were in that scenario, but I usually try to avoid it asking people what their use case is before showing them any of the (2) laptops my store carries.
It sucks that you had to deal with that though... -
@MissDirection How about play the game with him and then call him a cock sucking presumptuous cockbag? It's a win-win in my books lol
-
@MissDirection Get the rapid fire questions immediately then 😂😂
Ask several hard questions back to back without time for him to answer and then call him a cock sucking presumptuous cockbag! Still a win win just without a gams. -
Wack61957y@MissDirection I once got a call of a "Microsoft tecnical suport" guy, strong indish accent, telling me my computer has a virus and they need to fix it. Was in a hurry as I had to leave in 10minutes. So told him, we only had linux and wished him good luck with his next call. Wish I had more time and a VM ready to burn.
-
@Wack I sit there and pretend to be an absolute idiot and then I end up yelling at that top of my lungs to try and create an ear rape scenario. Or I'll sit there and cuss them out to make them cuss back 😂😂
-
Wack61957yOr you could school that guy on women's role when it comes to computers. Thinking about https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/... or https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/... (or all the others see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/... )
If it wasn't for them, computers as we know them today wouldn't exist! -
Wack61957y@theScientist that's why I said, as we know them today. Sure there would be "similar" constructs. But probably implemented in a different way.
-
@MissDirection this breaks my heart as i *still* work there every few weeks for a few hours and I like to think the associates are better than that...
I'm sorry he was a tool, but i promise we're not all like that. 💔 -
@taylorviktorya oh, I know. I don't generally form blanket opinions based in the actions of one moron. And I have to admit, I do it to men (though not as rude) when they come into my job.
-
@MissDirection ok. If anyone does that again, say you're Hubert Jollee's niece (he's the CEO and i probably totally got his last name wrong) 😂
-
This whole thing makes me think I need to stop being condescending to me who come into the store where I work. Hm, maybe this cockbag made me a better person...
-
@MissDirection nah. Don't let him win. It's just coincidence you're suddenly seeing this ;)
-
@taylorviktorya you're probably right. I'm pretty fabulous and I treat men like they are clueless when then come I to Victoria's Secret because they absolutely are clueless. Thanks for talking me out of letting that cockbag win.
-
@MissDirection 😂😂😂 they usually are when they're in VS though... I love watching them when they're in there
-
@taylorviktorya the funniest is when they come to me for help and then tell me their ideas about "getting something sexy" for their SO. So clueless.
-
-
@MissDirection I'm not surprised. Would have so much fun telling them that blindfolds are out, and using *random item* is in...
-
@taylorviktorya that random item could be the big rubber fist I got for my cousin as a joke gift for her bachelorette party lol
Why would a guy want to get his girl a vibrator? Vibrators are the reason I'm still single lol -
@MissDirection no idea, might need a guy's opinion on it. Unless they're planning on watching their gf use it...?
-
@taylorviktorya hm, probably. Maybe that will be my first app... Vibrator shop for Android and IOS lol
-
@MissDirection just don't require permissions to camera... our do, you'll keep emergency rooms in business 😂😂😂😂😂
-
vojb5567y@MissDirection well, that escalated quickly! I must say I wouldn't buy one... But that's just me haha
-
R5on11c10447y@MissDirection you could have just embarrassed him with knowledge about the topic. He would have realized really soon that the customer at hand isn't just your Barbie next door.
Imho just insulting him with no context isn't just a rude thing to do, but also doesn't provide any basis for the guy to learn what he might have done wrong. -
Humans have a really hard time not classifying other humans.
Me: "A new dev starts in our backend team on Monday. She's super skilled but new to the city, so let's make her feel welcome..."
Junior: "You mean designer?"
Me: "No, I just said developer didn't I?"
Junior: "But I thought, if it's a girl..."
Me: "If you don't shut up, I'll make you clean the office in a maid's costume for a month" -
Wack61957y@taylorviktorya guys opinion here: my GF has still a vibrator and uses it when I'm away or she's horny and I'm not. I would however never get the idea to buy her one, as a) I have no expirience with them and b) it should "fit her needs" so she knows best what to get.
Also why would one like to watch his GF doing it herself and you just siting there watching? I mean... There are more fun things to do... -
@Wack @MissDirection Once you've taken the direct approach in your love life too many times, it'll become more and more interesting to check other, more playful, less goal-oriented methods... in my opinion it's much more fun as well.
-
@Wack you're not wrong, but idk what people are into these days... too much to keep up with 😂
-
@Letmecode exactly. And I get that everyone has some sort of bias, it's human nature. Shit, I can assume by his appearance that he is a perpetual virgin. But the real point is if your are trying to sell something to someone, don't piss them off
-
@MissDirection @taylorviktorya damn girls u are tough, and congrats for not letting that guy win
-
Noob64607y@MissDirection While you're not wrong, it wasn't cool to abuse the guy. He's working at frontal customer support every day. He's used to generalization and people who have no clue about what they want or need. He meets annoying and stupid customers every day.
He may be a noob at technology but it doesn't mean that he is a bad person for not recognizing your passion for JavaScript. -
@Noob I get your point, but to show me a pink HP Stream? Seriously? And then to act like it's impossible that I code because I am wearing makeup and a dress? I mean what's next? I'm going to want to vote or wear pants?
-
@Wack that's a fun process 😂
We *obviously* can't wear pants or vote, because who will look after the children? They might start thinking girls can build things and boys can cook!!! (Obviously all kinds of sarcasm and not being serious) -
@taylorviktorya I was just kidding. I am in the kitchen as we speak, in a long skirt, barefoot, and cooking. I know my place.
-
Wack61957y@taylorviktorya and where would that end if we guys would have to cook or do houshold chores and such stuff?!? :P /ironyOff
-
Wait... In addition to being barefoot in the kitchen cooking, shouldn't I also be perpetually pregnant and cleaning?
-
Wack61957y@jhh2450 amen. I love to cook. I don't mind doing some stuff either but I can't stand drying plates and shit with a towel after cleaning it. Just let it sit and dry!
Plus my GF and I bought us a little robot vacum which does the floor cleaning while we're gone :P -
@PaddiM8 I wish! If we were, I would've helped her out rather than the dude who wrongly assumed she couldn't code
-
@PaddiM8 @bittersweet @taylorviktorya there is a devrant team in slack btw, if u want to join just tag ur emails and ill invite u
-
@CozyPlanes lol I sell lingerie and I'm teaching myself to code. I only model it if I am drunk
-
@MissDirection I deleted it. And I created it just for this. I love y'all, but not enough to give my real email
-
@taylorviktorya yup i already sent the invite, if not its an eeasy to remember email
-
@MissDirection that's going to take getting used to reading. Many of my slack teams have "The Queen" as my name...
-
@taylorviktorya it's in the settings.but the joke's on me because you can only change it every 6 months lol
-
@taylorviktorya understood. Just remember that you too are royalty. We have decreed it.
-
@QueenCodeslut so then I have options. Do I want to be queen, or captain of the royal guard?
-
@QueenMorgana since Dfox is already a knight of the realm, I don't see why @Letmecode shouldn't be our knight as well.
-
Mate... he works at Best Buy. You don't end up slinging laptops at Best Buy without being a presumptuous cockbag.
-
@vojb I have nothing against pink, but when he saw me looking at rigs with high-end specs, why down sell me a pink paperweight? Why act so shocked when I mentioned coding and actually laugh at me? That's the point, really. I get that I am super girlie and don't look like a "nerd" or whatever, but maybe that's the problem. People stereotyping everyone.
-
@QueenCodeslut you could've just been the hottest nerd he's ever seen and he forgot how to brain 😉😙
-
@QueenMorgana or perhaps he's just never been in the presence of royalty before 😉 😘
-
vojb5567y@QueenCodeslut
Ah figured. But no one should judge a computer by its look.. same goes for people! We can just hope he learned that as well -
Celes6877yHoly shit, I just wake up and found that rant... And the comments :D I'm ready to work now, thanks :p
-
Glitched677yBest Buy employees are not only cockbags, but idiotic cockbags as well. They're the type to try to sell you a GTX 1080 for office use and a GT 210 for 4K Gaming..
-
R5on11c10447y@Glitched yea fuck those idiots for having a job probably noone would want to do where you have daily encounters with the most stupid and aggressive kind of person just to pay their bills.
At a certain point you (generally speaking to the people in thhis thread who feel spoken to) have to get your heads out of your asses.
1. The world does not revolve around you, and the broad market is tailored towards normies.
2. Why in the hell would you even go to a best buy to get Hardware.? There are better and cheaper options online...
3. Lack of knowledge and context does not mean evil intent, talking to people can solve misunderstandings (fucking mindblowing right?).
4. My best friend works as a cashier. Those people don't give a shit who you are for a good reason. If you feel inclined to show your colourful pesonality either do it in a friendly way, or go to someone who gives a damn.
The narrowmindedness of some people here is amazing... -
R5on11c10447y@Wack depends on how you view it. Did he have any malicious intent? Highly doubt it. Could the girl just speak up and tell him that she is actually knowledgable about the hardware she is buying? Maybe. Does a guy with a shitty job and low payment deserve to be insulted over a petty little misconception? I don't think so.
It's very easy trying to be self rightous when facing a dude that will most likely be fired the moment he disagrees with you. I am not saying that his attitude was justified, but much more understandable than walking into a store, agree to be shown around for the products, then completly flip at the fact that the average female customer in the computer section is not the next stephen hawkins... -
R5on11c10447y@Wack furthermore, this dude had NO idea that he was talking to a developer. He never even raised the point that she cannot code because of her sex. How can you imply a sexist "Girls can't code" way, when he doesn't even know what profession the person in front of him has?
-
R5on11c10447y@Wack I did, and sadly other people in this thread seem kinda hype about bashing a random cashier...
-
@R5on11c he's not a cashier, he's a sales associate in the computer department, there's a difference; his training tells him to ask lifestyle questions to see customers will use their new device. When @QueenCodeslut mentioned programming, that was all he should have needed to start asking more questions rather than assuming she didn't know how to code. I work at best buy, hear all the shit everyone talks and i try to prove them wrong but i can tell you he is the narrow minded one.
-
@R5on11c good job on not reading my rant. Let me copy/paste to help you us, thus ending this riduculousness...
"When I mentioned I need a new rig for coding, he actually chuckled and said "really?". So I replied "yes really, you presumptuous cockbag" and walked out."
Some key elements:
1. Me saying "new rig for coding"
2. him chuckling and saying "Really" in disbelief.
So when it comes to having head from ass removal procedures done, you might want to take a look in the mirror and then consult your local surgeon.
Also... Stephen Hawking*. Stephen Hawkins is an Australian rower who took gold in the 1992 Olympics.
"talking to people can solve misunderstandings". So can listening to a customer when she tells you she needs a NEW RIG FOR CODING (caps for emphasis), and so does reading the original post before responding. But I suppose it's hard to read the post from way up on high in your Ivory Tower.
My work here is done. Good day, sir. -
@QueenCodeslut
And it's really not that hard to ask neutral questions, like:
"Could you tell me what kind of things you do on a laptop"
"Are you looking for something mobile and light, is performance important, is there a budget range?"
Apart from the fact that selling based on presumptions is a stupid strategy — The first 5 minutes of any conversation with any stranger should be mostly asking questions and listening, interspersed with some light personal anekdotes. -
@bittersweet exactly. And when he asked if i needed it for social media type crap, I was explicit in telling him I wanted a coding rig. It was obvious want I wanted in about 90 seconds.
-
R5on11c10447y@QueenCodeslut good on ya, one stamp on the feminism card. Also, major props on the nitpicking and projection. Empathy must be one of your main stengths.
-
R5on11c10447yAlso loving it how you accuse the dude of having a "sexist" attitude, while replying in a sexist attitude. Your type of logic must be amazing. People would absolutely flip if this shit was vice versa.
-
heikomat6867yHow was he supposed to know, that you know your way around technology? He's not a mind reader.
Acting like he has to know that was rude. -
heikomat6867y@Wack telling someone you need a coding machine doesn't not necessarily mean you know your way around computers. You could be buying on behalf of someone else (though not that likely) She could've given him some specs she wants the machine to have. Just because he wasn't used to the situation (you have to admit, very girly coders are somewhat rare, especially ones that look for machines at BestBuy), doesn't mean he's pretentious.
He has to work with all different kinds of people, and has to rely on stereotypes to guess what people might need, because he can't look into their heads. And that probably works most of the time. Her not fitting the stereotypes she displayed probably caught him off guard. But instead of showing empathy for someone with such a shitty job, she decided to be a dick about it -
@R5on11c yes empathy is one of my strengths and intelligence, displayed by your obvious understanding of the situation.
-
@heikomat if you think "rig for technology" means an HP Steam 11, you may want to consider another line of work.
-
@R5on11c I get it, you're one of those. Enough said. I'll get back in the kitchen. Oh, and do worry, sir, I'll be sure to not vote or wear pants.
-
@heikomat and I should show empathy for someone who laugh in my face? Wtf is wrong with you people?
-
R5on11c10447y@QueenCodeslut no ... we are just the kind of people who really don't give a shit if you got an X or Y chromosome. If you want to be petty about someones attitude, at least roll with it.
I don't see you as a woman, i see you as a human.
Your passive agressive name and attitude alongside with your joy to imply things people never said just make it impossible to discuss things with you.
And one major thing, how on earth are you so damn insecure that you need to outright insult somone over a cheeky attitude? Just take it like an adult and people may even take you serious. -
R5on11c10447y@QueenCodeslut and holy shit. The 50s are over. Women have the same rights. If you want to spew some ideology go to Tumblr.
-
heikomat6867y@QueenCodeslut you haven't said that he laughed in your face (or if you have, I have missed it). And judging from the conversations I have seen in this rant, your profile picture and your profile description, i don't fully trust that your version of this story is completely true to reality. To me, you seem like someone who would have no problem adding a little lie here or there, so it sounds more scandalous.
Could be that I'm completely wrong on that one, but only you and the guy from BestBuy know that for sure. -
@R5on11c sorry man, you still don't get it. I can't explain it any simpler than I have, so I won't try to make you understand. Think I'm wrong, think whatever you like, insult me, it matters not. You clearly did not read my rant, or if you did, you don't or refuse to get it. And that's fine. Have a nice day.
-
@heikomat I did say that he laughed (chuckled to be precise), but it's fine. I can't make people understand words. Judge me by a cartoon profile pic, that's fine too. I don't not have the time to make adults (I'm assuming here) understand basic concepts.
-
R5on11c10447y@QueenCodeslut i didn't insult you once and i get the situation very well. So much for my former statement. You are constantly being condescending and (lawdy, the irony) presumptuous about other people.
If that attitude translates over into real life i can understand the dude at BestBuy.
Do you see where i'm coming from with this? You can't just apply your own morals (whatever those may be) on a situation and calculate whether you can be insulting and condescending. I mean... you can, but that would mean you would have to deal with the concequences.
The choice is yours. -
@heikomat my username was MissDirection. I changed it to this as a joke because someone called me a "codeslut". A bunch of us had a laugh over it and I changed my name. If this is reason to judge me, so be it.
-
heikomat6867y@QueenCodeslut I handle people based on their character and actions. Because I don't know you in person, but only from this rant, my possibilities to interpret your personality are limited. So I have to work with what I have.
This of course is prone to be inaccurate, but it is usually at least more accurate than not considering any input at all. -
Wack61957ySpecialy, when clicking on the notification, telling you there are new comments. It would be nice, if it jumped to the first new comment. (Or at least to the end of the list, if storing who has seen what, would need to much data stored in the db).
@Celes could you suggest it using the issue tracker on Github? https://github.com/devRant/devRant/... -
Sounds more like you acted like the "presumptuous cock bag", tbh, you exhibited misandry. I worked retail, it's rare to find customers that know anything but browsing the internet and checking email. Most smart people, like us, just order online as we can customize it how we want. Being Best Buy, they get people like my sister who just bought a pink laptop for internet browsing, Lisa Frank stickers not included.
-
@Wallpaper we do get people like that, but it's against all our training and our customer promises to act the way this associate did.
Source: I've worked there for 7 years. -
@Wallpaper sure. Meet me in New York City tomorrow and I will take you to the store to meet the salesman and we can discuss it.
Or read my original post and the comments that followed to decide if I am lying or not. At this point, I no longer care to try and make some people understand basic concepts and I have no need or desire to defend myself to anyone. -
I don't really understand the defence against someone who laughs at a person because they didn't conform to the gender stereotype. Full support for @MissDirection
-
@Hedgepig thank you. But it's pointless to even discuss at this point. People think how they want to think and that's it.
-
@MissDirection Irrelevant, we're only hearing one side of the story so you can claim victim all you want, it doesn't make it true.
-
@Wallpaper for the record, troll, that's every rant here. It's one person's side of things. Good observation though.

On a break I went into a Best Buy to browse laptops. I had no intention on buying from them because they suck, but I just wanted to touch a few and look at specs. A salesman then thought it was a smart idea to approach me. Immediately, he was talking down to me about specs and asking if I needed it for email, Facebook, Instagram, and the like. I'll be honest, I am super girlie in my appearance and mannerisms. So I get it, I suppose. The big pseudo-nerd is going to help the little girl find a cute, social media laptop. He actually walked me over to a pink HP Stream lol. Sure, I like pink, but I don't want a useless paperweight of a machine. When I mentioned I need a new rig for coding, he actually chuckled and said "really?". So I replied "yes really, you presumptuous cockbag" and walked out. Needless to say, I won't be buying there.
