All devs in the company are booked 120% until late summer. Boss just sold another 6000 hours cloud project to kick off in 2 weeks. I’m the PM, and my colleagues will hate me for this thinking that it’s my fault they have to work their asses off for the next 5 months!10

My CEO: "So! You are the new guy we hired to design and manage the implementation of our new state of the art super-duper fancy ERP solution with badass Business Intelligence systems to grow our company which already spans over several localities across the county, that has to live for at least the next 12-15 years?
Please remember that the Windows Server in the rack in the basement needs replacement soon, and that our new fancy solution must not in any way utilize cloud-technology or SaSS! I don't like that! I think it's a scam! We store everything on premises, own our infrastructure and we buy our software...Because I think that is best!"
Me: "So... let me get this straight: You want me to build you a one-off, concept sports car that can outperform a Lamborghini using only plywood, duct-tape and a donkey cart?"
He walked off... I may need a new job next week!14 -
!rant: I finally quit development! It's been awful! Really!
Got a CIO position instead, and I really like it!9 -
Am I the only one around here who is really annoyed about the wkX tags not following the week numbers in the calendar?
wk52 should be wk20!!!3 -
Any iOS or Android devs here?
I have a question, that I hope you will answer:
It is possible for an app to log the users location, say every half hour, while the app is running in the background AND the screen of the device is locked?9 -
Tech industry: "We need thousands upon thousands of engineers!"*
* With a minimum of 5 years+ experience in about 30 technologies, able to do magic and ride unicorns while working 28 hours pr day just for the lolz of it. We do not provide training, courses or certifications of any kind. You are supposed to be able to pull those out of your ass yourself!7 -
Was fired after 3 months. My boss said "how did you even pass engineering school?!"
I'm not a skilled programmer... and never will be!6 -
Damn, looking at LinkedIn is pretty depressing when everybody seem very successful, and I can't even find just a decent job at the moment...4
-
!rant: Does anyone here work as a Microsoft Dynamics NAV developer of consultant? Or used to? I would really much like hear a little about what it involves on a daily basis, before jumping straight in...
Or if you work with ERP, CRM or BI in general I'd like a word with you. 😀 -
When I started at first semester at engineering school, our programming teacher could not write code! He then took the 2nd semester programming course alongside the rest of us!15

!rant: I need a little advice from fellow devs. I've come to the conclusion that development is not the right career path for me, but how to advance from here?
I've worked a little over a year as dev/scrum master and lately I've been assigned small project management tasks. I really liked the project management stuff, and I like talking to stakeholders and converting their ideas into well described requirements and development tasks.
But who will hire a junior level engineer with no formal project manager training or certifications?
What kind of jobs could I apply for?1 -
Bachelor of software engineering, master of business administration = executive level job at large software companies.
It's pretty simple actually..,1 -
Am I the only one having a really hard time grasping code when it involves more than just a few classes devided into several files?! I simply can't follow what happens when method a in class b instantiates class c and d while implementing interface e injection dependency f and extending class g...!?
Does this make sense? -
I get really depressed at times and thinks about quitting my job often... normally this happens when I'm assigned work where I have to code! I hate implementation!9

I know this may not be the typical post on Devrant and it may be a little off topic, but I could really use some advice from fellow colleagues here.
The thing is, I just finished engineering school and I got my first job as a software engineer. So far so good. I've never been a natural talent in this field, and I suck at writing code. I find things like architecture, system design, innovation, requirementsspecification, management and business development much more interesting.
These past weeks as a software engineer has been really challenging for me. I seem to be totally "in over my head", and fuck everything up. I can't understand how the code I'm supposed to write works, and can't solve even the simplest of tasks that are assigned to me if they involve any implementation of code, or fiddling with Github or build servers.
Is it normal to feel like this as an engineer with zero experience? Will things get better, or should I just resign or wait to be fired?
What would a natural next step for a software engineer who'd like to move more into business and management be? A MBA? Project management courses?
I hope to get some advice from you guys. Maybe you've felt like this when you started out as well? Anyway, any constructive feedback would be really much appreciated.7 -
Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"36 -
Every scrum meeting where I can't figure out what I should claim that I did yesterday...
"Scrolled devRant and 9GAG" obviously isn't an option!5 -
People sending text documents in .doc format... what is fucking wrong with you?! Word has even had a build in .pdf converter for decades!?15

As a person with a low grit personality, learning to program well is close to impossible. If it doesn't work in the first two or thee attempts I tend to loose interest and move on to something else. Can I do anything to help this?8
-
!rant: Need a little advice here. What are fundamental things to learn when moving from development to management? I have a course in project management from university, and one in personnel management, but what about the financial part? Where can I learn this?

Where I work, the password needed to retrieve your paycheck in the system is your birthday. (Like November 3rd = 0311).
Guess it's no secrete how much money everyone makes?!
Oh... it's the passcode on our keycards as well!
The company has 2000+ employees and and makes more than $35 mil a year6
