This is not about devRant… but it might as well be.

Imagine public forum. Everyone can read and post, everyone can comment. And there's no way to send a private message.

You use said forum for years. Whether you like it or not, you form alliances, friendships, frenemieships and engage all kinds of social contracts. There's no ro(ot)ster either, so you keep all that in your head, until one day you need a social contract formalized — exchange contact info. With Steven.

You can't just “@Steven text me, here's my phone”, that's borderline suicidal. You yearn a safe haven. A proxy that'd allow privacy. So you quickly spin up a service, let's say Discord (it wasn't Discord, but close enough), post a link, and within seconds Steven joins… He and seven other Stevens.

So you send each a unique sentence, a 2fa token so to speak, and ask them to post it on said devRant-like forum — they can delete it later after all. And a few minutes later there's eleven Stevens posting garbage faster than mods can delete, because whitespace power. But you bravely sift through that shit until the correct Steven rants “I'm blue, da-ba-dee da-ba-da”, and finally you know which Discord Steven is blue, so you can privately chat about colours.

And then Steven's 75 years old, well-reputed account gets banned on devRant for posting along other spamming Stevens. And you can't even PM administration, because devRant is a public forum without PM-ing indeed.

Pun intended, though it's not about @root either… but it might as well be.

God did you guys create a discord again????

Cool people are on matrix you idiots.
  • 2
I wondered why devrant doesn't have chat. It would affect amount of ranting prolly. I also only posted in the devrant matrix group since I joined that
  • 3
@antigermgerm @retoor I still haven’t joined that. I really ought to before this place disappears.

@cprn I’ve done basically that contacting … eight people from devRant. It wasn’t as bad as you outlined though :)
  • 1
@Root Close, though…? 😆 Same experience minus trolls? Admittedly, the platform I'm actually talking about is known for its trolling capability.
  • 2
@Demolishun It's not Blamers Anonymous if it's true. 😝 Although, I'm not really blaming anyone, just noticed how much easier it could've been if there simply was a “PM” button.
  • 1
@antigermgerm Discord's way more accessible, though, as a one-time disposable proxy. I removed the server after we've connected directly. Although it wasn't Discord.
  • 2
    @cprn I guess 9gag or 4chan
  • 2
We do have an unofficial matrix chatroom and a discord.
It's a bit messy, but some peeps are there.
  • 2
@cprn it just reminded me of the "damn you Steve" from that video. I didn't go any deeper than that.
  • 2
    @retoor I neither confirm nor deny. 😂
  • 1
@cprn why it's secret? That would make me assume you're using the same username on one or both of them. Posted too much weird stuff? 😂 I posted so much weird & personal stuff here that I won't share my github connected to real name. That's sad
  • 2
@retoor Well, yeah, we're in a place where people rant about their jobs, so trying to be professional and avoid leaking any connections to any piece of data that might point to one of my (former) employers. Nowadays, I use e-mail alias per service and come up with unique usernames, but I didn't always do that.

I stand by everything I ever posted, though. Here or otherwise.
  • 2
@cprn I stand for the posts I've made here too. That's exactly the problem 😂 The retoor person is real me. Everything under my real name is censored
  • 1
@retoor If shit ever hits the fan, blame it on Retoor:1B 😆
  • 0
@cprn Retoor1b uncensored knows everything, passwords (not from email), social identification number, bank accounts, family tree, resume, a lot of opinions about stuff.

The censored one is to send as a resume and uses real name.

I busy with embeddings now with text analyze modes that I use to make embeddings for my normal models
  • 2
@retoor You're way more advanced on that than I am. The only reason I understood what you've said is usage of embeddings in Stable Diffusion. I know nothing about creating them, though — respect.

I wonder if this is how we will go through job interviews in the future. You train a model on your personal data, workflow, tech stack, world views and some pet projects, then send it to interviews to compete with other models. Recruiting AI talks to every candidate AI, then they negotiate pay, work conditions and draft a contract.
  • 1
@cprn I doubt if I'm more advanced since it's all described in this smol article: https://ollama.com/blog/...

    > You can't just "@Steven text me, here's my phone"

You can just "@Steven encrypt your phone number with my public key: .... and post the result here"
  • 2
don't meet your heroes, they're very boring in realtime
  • 1
That's my people like me are needed on these type of platforms.

I put piece of shit people in their place and convince them that they're horrible cunts.

I managed to push Nanos out of existence and JestDotty out of the matrix group. So you can judge how good i am at what I do.

@devRancid What if Steven are a layman, hence, don't know how to…?
  • 1
@SidTheITGuy That would alleviate the necessity for contact exchange, wouldn't it… 😆
  • 0
@cprn there are websites where you only have to copy paste it
  • 1
@devRancid Call me paranoid, but pasting secrets in plain text to a 3rd party website rubs me the wrong way.

    We need a new devrant.

    With private messaging.

I'll add in the obligatory "with black jack and hookers!"

So we all don't lose the connections, ephemeral or otherwise, that we made here.
