I don't know a whole lot about it but you can configure crawlers/bots with it.

If you want to get it updated as quickly as possible (have no source that it works but I assume it's a smart move) you could submit your url to Google and/or submit a sitemap.xml in the developer console

yeah <meta name="description"> works. on my website it showed up is <title> then <description> in the description on google
