Finally I found a webpage related to my bug.
The page is from 2004.
*keeps reading*
"Yes, yes! This is exactly the problem I'm having"
*Carefully reading each comments*
*Looking at scroll bar with stress*
*Almost coming to end, no signs of solution*
At the end the thread creator say: "Ah finally I've fixed the problem. Thanks everyone for helping"
*moment of silence*
WHY U NO SHARE THE GOD DAMN SOLUTION? YOU FUCKING IDIOT17 -
I know it wasn't ethical, but I had to do it.
Semester 4 started this week, we all got to vote which day we wanted the lecture to be held on. There were quite a few options. My preference was Monday at 7:30pm.
So I entered the poll, as I have every other semester. But I noticed something, this particular poll didn't require any form of identification. Not even a Student ID.
I dug deeper, found that it used local cookies to store weather you'd voted or not, this is obviously a security problem, so I opened up Python and wrote a simple Selenium program to automate this process.
I called it the "Vote Smasher". First it would open the webpage, then it would choose Monday 7:30pm and vote. Then it would clear it's cookies, refresh and do it over again.
I ran it fifty times.
Can you guess what the revealed vote was for UCD SP4 IT was?
I heard my lecturer mutter:
"The votes aren't usually this slanted..."
I could hardly contain my giggles.
My vote won by about fifty over the others 😂
Let me just say, it was his fault for choosing such a naive poll system in the first place 😉36 -
Me: *desperately trying to finish a webpage before 5pm deadline*
Girlfriend: Why are you always so focused on your computer? You never pay attention to me.
Me: You know I have to work. Besides, you'll always be number 1 in my heart
Girlfriend: Aww that was cute. Okay I'll let you finish working
Me to me: ...arrays start at 0. *continues typing*

Me: intern in XYZ company
Boss: boss of XYZ
Boss: Why are you taking so much time in developing a simple webpage.
Me: *explains because you asked for so much bullshit to include**
Boss: I can develop it in half an hour.
Me: *-_-*
Boss: I developed a website in PowerPoint when I was intern.
Me: In PowerPoint? How?... Really..?
Boss: Ya, that's the type of skills I have. You're so lazy, you take so much time to make a simple webpage.
Me: -_-22 -
Me: "We should remove that popup"
Marketer: "But our A/B testing statistics show a 14% increase in signups to our newsletter, and people who get our newsletter are 4% more likely to buy something"
Me: "0.14x0.04... so slightly more than half a percent improvement. And you also qualitatively measured how many people decide to never visit the page again, just because of that popup? Did you measure the how many internet users with adblockers run into a broken webpage? Did you measure the amount of emails to support from users who can't unsubscribe from the newsletter because there is no unsubscribe link?"
Marketer: "Why would they want to unsubscribe? The newsletter adds value to our users!"
Me: 😩26 -
Client: The webpage has been inaccessible all weekend!!
Me: Oh you mean the page you need to have a VPN connection to access?
Client: Yes that one!
Me: Are you connected to the VPN?
Client: Oh...no I'm not. *connects to VPN* Its working now.5 -
Client : Can you make some adblock?
Me : Why? There is a lot of good things already...
C : I mean... Listen carefully.
M : ok
C: i have some google ads and user blocks with adblock
M : yeah, that is normal
C : so i implemented adblock blocker which blocks adblock so that i can show the webpage plus ads when the user disables adblock.
M : i bet users hate that.
C : yeah, so users found out a way to disable adblock blocker which disables adblock blocker which i implemented to show the ads! So i cant earn revenue..
M : so what?
C : Can you make ad block block block block?
M : Sure. How much will you give me ?
C : 20 to 30 dollars
M : great ( the most generous client ever seen)
*couple of years later*
Client : can you make ad block block block block block block block block block block?
Me : i cant understand
C : count the number of block
If there is odd number of block i means to block ads.
If there is even number of block ads, it means to show ads making user to disable ads.
M : so just tldr your request this time
C : even number
M : ok how much will you pay
C : 20 to 30 dollars
*next day*
C : can you..
M : offline
Who in the fucking world made ads, made adblock and made adblock block?15 -
After countless hours trying to spell my name for customer service over the phone, I made a little webpage that helps me spell words phonetically! 💬

Client wants a beautiful webpage ASAP.
I just discovered the perfect CSS that will magically fix all of their problems:

The best part is that its mobile friendly by default.

I made a Trello board and listed some tasks for me and my team.
My boss comes in, I show him the trello board to show how I organized our tasks.
He liked it, so I asked him if we can use it more frequently.
He replied: this is your code, do whatever you want.
I asked: my code?
He replied: yah didn't just build this webpage? This interactive task manager.
Me in shock: hold on you think I built trello?
Boss: oh ... You didn't ? It looks like something you'd do for your "front end masterbaution".
Me: oh wow, well... If that was the case I would've made $425 million on top of my salary.
Boss: looked at me like meh ~ and walked away...7 -
My gf caught me unguarded after she told me that she has some updates for her webpage, right after I did the last updates. Massively amused. Not! 😅24
-
Manager: I just think you are being too negative. Like sometimes other people have opinions too and we should hear them out before saying no.
Me: Well your opinion is the devs shouldn't be able to estimate their own tasks and you should decide on our behalf how long something should take.
You also want to decide what tech stack we use, because you followed a "Hello World" tutorial last night and it worked out for you.
Just because you got a simple webpage up and running in 2 hours doesn't mean all websites take 2 hours with the tech. Were not sitting in the corner laughing that you think its taking us 3 weeks to build this.
I'm not being negative simply because I don't agree with you. I'm not being unreasonable if I say I can do 6 weeks work in 2 weeks. And although it sounds offensive, i'm actually doing you a favour by telling you to get your head out of your ass11 -
Had this a few days ago. You know how we all have our reflexes?
Client emailed that a few sites weren't working. I always, always look at the links but that's slowly eradicating because it becomes an automated thing.
Sound was on (only headphones luckily).
*clicks link*
*wild webpage (literally) with webcam girls/shows renders and starts playing sound*
😕
😐 😰 😱 😵 😆 😅
My reflexes then made me go "FUCK FUCK FUCK HOLD ON CRAP FUCKING FUUUUUCK" (you can also take that literally in this context, yes) aaaaaand I somehow automatically closed the whole browser with ctrl+q.
*looks around to see if anyone noticed*
*wipes sweat off forehead*
That went alright 😅10 -
So, i tried to demonstrate my roommate how many people push their credentials to github by searching for "password remove" commits.
I decided to show him the file and noticed something interesting. A public IP, and mysql credentials.
I visit the IP and what do i see there, a directory listening with a python script, with injects the database into a webpage (???) and a log of all http requests. Lots of failed attacks aiming at the PHP CGI. Still wondering how they failed on a python server 🤔🤔🤔
Edit phpmyadmin to connect to the mysql database. Success.
Inserted a row telling him the his password is on github. Maybe i should also have told him how to actually remove it. 😅
Yes, root can login from %
This is how far i can get with my current abilities.

Fuck any dev who thought playing sounds automatically on a webpage or on a mobile app without user's consent is a good feature. Especially when you don't even include a setting about it.

There are good days.
There are bad days.
And there are hacking something together in a legacy html4 jsp tomcat5 webpage with frame inserts days.
Today is the third one.2 -
Recently my company worked in project with a big international company which uses a crazy framework to build a part of there webpage. This framework only used random IDs and class names and not even different html elements. And to completely freak out all elements are positioned absolute and on every change the whole page go rendered.7

All web developers should support up to IE9 without any problems.
Why? Because in Korea, it is normal.
Every person uses that damn Win7, which has either IE9 or IE10. Without IE support, no one will browse your webpage.
Now you would ask us, why don't you use other modern browsers?
We would then ask you, why would you install a new browser that is
1. Buggy
2. Heavy
3. Takes up ram
4. Has so many features
when you have an awesome minimalistic browser that is preinstalled, and works in all Windows? No thanks.
So, if you put a message saying you will soon drop support of IE, it means that you won't target Korea. Just after the support drop, there won't be traffic to your web site.
So what is the point of this rant?
1. We love IE. Lol
2. IE is lightweight, minimalistic, and the fastest browser in the world.
3. All websites should NOT drop support for IE.
4. We don't care whether web devs will have a hard time. We just think websites are built with Wix and Wordpress, and they work in IE, meaning, IE support is the number one priority.
5. If you ever start a business in Korea, and has a website, make sure to hire an senior Korean web dev who has worked with IE for a long time.
6. Here is the tl;dr
Hate us. Period.25 -
Like "Why is Facebook webpage running so slow" (I think cuz of all the tracking stuff, and they are having trouble on my Linux machine). Hello devRant and devs!
Next week I am going to attend to a hackathon organised by my study (24 hours) and me and another guy are going together (or, maybe one more person but not sure yet).
We are going as: team devRant!
My idea is to at least do a quick status update/vlog every x hours and maybe a webpage where I update peoples but I was wondering if anyone here would like to see the event, see the updates/vlog stuffs or maybe not at all?
It will also be live streamed onto the internet!
Would like to hear your opinions on this =).16 -
I tried to convince my boss that using 3d rendering to display information on webpage is unnecessary luxury.
The web browser would hang if the user is using an average pc and there is too much data to render.
This product is aimed for average joe, but he argues that computers in foreign countries are high end devices ONLY.
Such a bullshit.
I asked what if someone with low spec laptop tries to view the webpage.
He said, we will set a min spec requirements for using the website.
Are you fucking kidding me?! RAM and Graphics requirements for a webpage?!
My instinct says that the thing I'm working on would probably end up as waste of time.
But I'd probably learn cool tricks of threejs.5 -
So I made an android app for a client. It's a newspaper type of app for the clients webpage, as he has a lot of traffic on it and about 50-51% is from mobile. Which is all good an everything.
And so I've been working on it for a while now as it wasn't a primary focus, more of a like side project.
I was able to make full working build (publish ready) and sent it to the client for a review.
After about an hour I received an email saying that the app is requesting too many permissions from the user. So I started looking trough my manifest file and all of the 3rd party libs to see what were those permissions.
Well, when I finally installed the app on a physical device and looked trough the permissions in the settings all I found were permissions for the internet and prevent the phone from sleeping.
After asking the client to tell me in detail which permissions raised concerns he told me it were those 2 and if they could be removed.
So I just wasted an hour of my life trying to explain why the app that is losing content from the internet needs internet permissions.
Fml and ignorant people who think they know everything and won't accept anything else.
And all of this because he read on some click bait website how a "real" app doesn't need any permissions and every other is just trying to steal all of your data and money.2 -

I've already ranted about this before, so I will summarize, but users passwords would be placed in plain text at the bottom of a webpage if you interacted with the page in a certain way. This page did not require a login, so user passwords were basically public. Gg.2

Do you know what is world needs?
Good fucking tutorials for all programming languages.
Every time I want to learn a language it's a fucking mess. Tutorial here, tutorial there. Read the docs, it's fucking outdated. This person using this design, that person using that.
I am so tired of this shit.
also, for a simple example most website uses some complex architecture, something they think is the next thing.
Even searching for a simple QT singleton pattern gives me a webpage from QT Wiki which uses templates, typedefs and this shits to just show a FUCKING EXAMPLE OF THREAD SAFE SINGLETON.

I am having fun building a captured wifi portal. It shows up as "Virus Distribution Point" as an open AP. If you connect to the AP it brings up a page that looks like the picture.
It does nothing except show the page. The page will eventually do some limited javascript animation to make it look like it is doing something.
Right now it is an embedded webpage. Strings in a source file. Eventually I would like to turn this into a product of sorts that would make it easy for someone to use for advertising/pranks. So I expect I will need to create some sort of simple toolset for updating the pages and changing the SSID and the passcode (if any).8 -
Last week my company thought it would be a great idea to introduce a new sh*tty internal web portal that gives federated access to aws (instead of using our own accounts to assume dev roles like we used to do).
This broke a lot of sh*t that simply used to ask for an MFA token and used our practically permissionless accounts to assume a proper dev role. An MFA token that we'd enter directly into the terminal/tool. It was very seamless. But nooooooo we now have to go a webpage, login with sso (which also requires mfa), click "generate credentials," copy-paste those into terminal/creds file and _then_ continue our aws cli call. Every. Single. Day.
BUT TODAY I HAD ENOUGH.
I spent the entire day rewriting the auth part of our tools so they would basically read the cookie that's set by the web portal, and use it to call the internal api that generates the credentials, and just automatically save those. Now all we need to do is log into the portal, then return to the tool and voilà, the tool's also got access! Sure, it's not as passive as just entering an MFA token directly, but it's as passive as it gets. Still annoyed by this sh*tty and unnecessary portal, but I learned a thing or two about cookies.9 -
Dear developers, the main reason that I install your shitty apps is to do stuff quicker than through webpage or to log in once. I don't want to install your shitty app just to login every your shitty app update to only see small gui that opens your webpage.

"Ad targeters are pulling data from your browser’s password manager"
---
Well, fuck.
"It won't be easy to fix, but it's worth doing"
Just check for visibility or like other password managers handle it iirc: assign a unique identifier based on form content and fill that identifier only.
---
"Nearly every web browser now comes with a password manager tool, a lightweight version of the same service offered by plugins like LastPass and 1Password. But according to new research from Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy, those same managers are being exploited as a way to track users from site to site.
The researchers examined two different scripts — AdThink and OnAudience — both of are designed to get identifiable information out of browser-based password managers. The scripts work by injecting invisible login forms in the background of the webpage and scooping up whatever the browsers autofill into the available slots. That information can then be used as a persistent ID to track users from page to page, a potentially valuable tool in targeting advertising."

That's it, I'm done. My sincere condolences go to the poor soul that will have to maintain this complete and utter crap of code, as I have been doing the past 2 weeks.
3-4 big 4K+ lines files of completely unindented, practically undocumented, interspersed HTML, PHP, JavaScript and CSS! All in the same file.
All the function and variable names are complete nonsense. You might as well have smashed your head against the keyboard and let whatever came out be the names.
You took all the naming conventions that you could find and unleashed your seriously damaged imagination. lowerCamelCase, UpperCamelCase, snakecase, everything in the same fucking function name.
I really needed the money from this project. But I'm done. My mental sanity is more important that try to figure out how to make a decent and usable webpage of THIS COMPLETE DISASTER.
You, the one before me. If you wanted to make sure that no one else besides you could work with this crap, then congrats, YOU FUCKING DID IT WITH HONORS. FUCKING SUMMA CUM LAUDE. PhD and all.4 -

So I saw an article where in the author mentioned that "how will we earn money when there are so many adblock users, indirectly blocking out income, so we had to take some measures and that how we initiated coinhive on our websites, where in, it uses minimal cpu power for coin mining of every user that visits that webpage"
WTF, saying minimal, some users commented their saying they experienced sudden over usage of cpu cores and rise in temps while visiting the websites.
How do you justify such behavior, I feel kinda biased as I feel bad for them, but on the other hand, they just shouldn't rely on writing articles as a job/source of income4 -
Thanks to @bigus-dickus and @duckWit I remembered how a client during an interview once asked me to change all globes on his webpage (imagine something like attached, just with globes all over the place) to a green palette, because according to him "blue" means being gay in russian and that was the cause for people not hitting the landing page and not signing up anymore.5

Most unrealistic deadline I've had?
The client gives us a project with A 3-month deadline. All good, at first.
3 days later they told us that they're cutting out the funding and they gave us two options: Either stop the project right away and get paid for the work so far, or somehow finish the project in 7 days and get paid for the 10 days worth of work.
My idiot boss chose the second.
Saturdays and Sundays were declared working days, everyone screaming at each other, devs running around scrambling code to make the webpage render and keep it responsive.
Forget unit or automation testing, we only did not null and undefined testing and submitted the project.
Yeah, I hauled my ass out of the company just after that.4 -
Clients don't know what they want!
Was handed a detailed report and asked if I could create a webpage to dynamically generate the same thing from our database. Sure its ez ps lemon squeezy.
Simple page and database query. Boom, done. Exactly matched what they gave me.
They ask why some of the data isn't there. Uh well you cunts it wasn't on the original report...so it's not there obviously.1 -
Client asks me to implement pie chart on webpage. Sum of figures supplied amounts to > 100%. Pointing out discrepancy I request the correct figures, only to be told that the figures are correct. a message to code.org
- the fact that you have celebrities back your organization does not mean your content is good

SO WHY THE FUCK DO YOU GO OUT OF YOUR WAY TO MAKE EVERYTHING WE'RE TAUGHT USELESS. the app lab is js but NOT ON A WEBPAGE, it just instructions for a fucking character that you paid shit loads of money to, and not to mention slower than my commodore 64 mining a bitcoin. if I'm going to learn js, I want to make a webpage. how many fucking js recruiters are going to ask if you can make an app code.org's app lab??? fucking none. if we're going to learn how pictures are encoded, CAN WE ENCODE A FUCKING PICTURE? jpg, png, bmp, I DON'T CARE. but the fact that we have to set a delimeter and then type a 64x64 image in binary makes me want to die, but it's also USELESS.

A Visual Studio solution that had 62 (SIXTY TWO) projects for a webpage that was like 8 user forms total was like going to a shop to buy 3 items and receiving 15 tickets for that.
PMs saying no to refactoring due to not having enough time for a months. The first task took me 2 days just by fixing cyclic dependencies among the libraries. Went home and merged all the projects to just 3, building instantly in just two hours. Fuck idiot PMs that do not know how to code, buys shit and don't listen to devs. Fuck all idiots.4 -

mangodb's rant reminded me of smth.. Folks from my country might remember this story.
So we have a national e-health system. Millions have been invested, half of the money have never reached the project [disappeared smwhr in between] and its quality is not shiny. It works, sometimes even fast enough. But boy does it have bugs... Let's not get into that. It's politics.
So some time ago one IT guy spotted a bug that allowed him to get sensitive info of other patients. He informed e-health folks and waited for a fix. He waited for a few weeks but the fix had never been released. So he published his findings in soc media [yepp.. Stupid move]. That caused a national scandal. Not to mention he had been pressed with charges.
That guy and our health minister were invited in one of the tv debates. The guy was asked to explained how he found all this sensitive data. And he explained that he hit f12 in his browser, opened a network tab, issued a network request by clicking smth in the webpage analysed received data in the dev tools.
The minister looked somewhat happy, maybe a lil proud of himself - a person who has a "gotcha!" moment has that very glow he had. And he said: "what you did there was obvious hacking. I reckon you should know that true developers do not do those things you have just explained to us" [he was talking about dev tools].

Just added an RSS feed to my blog (https://nixmagic.com/rssfeed.xml/ if you're interested), and as I was testing it out in an RSS reader, I noticed that the reader basically just renders the webpage as if it were a web browser.
Heh.. I have only the Webkit engine on my computer, so I suppose it's just using that in the backend or something like that? How much RAM does that consume?
*looks at Task Manager*
67MB. I shit you not.. 67 megabytes. And that is rendering an entire website with no noticeable differences from a regular web browser.

TLDR: Find a website that requires a subscription but doesn't check their cookies' integrity, now I'm on a website for free.
>be me
>wonder if it's possible to intercept browser data
>download Wireshark
>download Fiddler
>find that none of these really fit me
>go to youtube, search how to intercept POST data
>find something called BurpSuite
>Totally what I was looking for
>start testing BurpSuite on devrant
>neat!
>I can see all the data that's being passed around
>wonder if I can use it on a website where my subscription recently ended.
>try changing my details without actually inputting anything into the website's form
>send the data to the server
>refresh the page
>it worked
>NEAT!
>Huh what's this?
>A uid
>must be a userID
>increment it by 1 and change some more details
>refresh the page
>...
>didn't work 😐
>Hmmm, let's try forwarding the data to the browser after incrementing the uid
>OH SHIT
>can see the details of a different user
>except I see his details are the details I had entered previously
>begin incrementing and decrementing the uid
>IFINITE POWER
>realize that the uid is hooked up to my browsers local cookie
>can see every user's details just by changing my cookie's uid
>Wonder if it's possible to make the uid persistent without having to enter it in every time
>look up cookie manipulator
>plug-in exists
>go back to website
>examine current uid
>it's my uid
>change it to a different number
>refresh the webpage
>IT FUCKING WORKED
>MFW I realize this website doesn't check for cookie integrity
>MFW I wonder if there are other websites that are this fucking lazy!!!
>MFW they won't fix it because it would require extra work.
>MFuckingFW they tell me not to do it again in the future
>realize that since they aren't going to fix it I'll just put myself on another person's subscription.5 -
There was a time, I couldn't find what made my webpage to appear blank. I stayed 3 more hours at the office to find the problem. Didn't find anything. The next day, I took a fresh look at my code, and guess what. A semicolon hidden in a JSON array.
Damn you semicolon ! I'll get you someday !3 -
Why me. Why is it always me who has issues with Windows. (The OS)
I HAVE to use windows for a specific thing right now. Fair enough, I have an old system lying around somewhere with not the best specs ever but it'll do. Windows 7, clean install.
Firstly, let's boot up! Booting goes fine, login goes well... "Installing device drivers" (keyboard and mouse combi). I connected this set a gazillion times before so no clue why windows would need to download the drivers YER AGAIN. But, fine, it works.
Let's connect a USB webcam and to to the hardware testing website to see if my setup is right!
(I mostly don't blame this part on windows)
The webcam drivers install successfully, good. Although the page says it isn't working, it displays the live cam footage well so whatever.
Installed Chrome (not chromium too badly) to see if it shows fine there but chrome doesn't detect ANY cam/mic combination at all, not even the integrated one(s).
Annoying so let's reboot and see if it works normally with all checks okay on Firefox.
Rebooted.... aaaaand the USB webcam driver installation fails. I'm weirded out since the drivers were installed BEFORE the reboot already. Firefox now does not display any can/mic.... until it does after a few reloads. Windows is still saying that the driver installation failed.
The testing webpage, however, still says its not working while I'm literally seeing my ugly smug on screen. I contact support which does a remote check and says all is good but there was probably "a glitch with Windows" while the checks are still mostly red, I take a copy of the chat log just to be sure.
Now, I kinda want to shut this system down until the time I'll need it but I'm rather afraid that Windows is going to throw driver conundrums yet again and I simply *CANNOT* have this right now. So, I'm leaving this system on until I need it, and I'll pray windows plays along well.21 -
Oh, a big "Learn More" button on the hero of your webpage. Let me click that. Oh, it slightly scrolls down to the bottom. I didn't expect that. Thanks for saving me some mousewheel flings. I appreciate it. Really.

ME: Here's an endpoint to get all the textual info about the entity. And this one fine endpoint is to fetch entity's files
FrontEnd: This is no good. I need all entity info in a single JSON
ME: but files could be quite heavy, are you sure you wan...
FE: Yes, Just give me all the info in a single JSON
ME: okay... I hope you know what you're doing..
ME: <implemented as requested>
ME: <opens a webpage with 2 files attached>
Browser: <takes 30 seconds to open a page and downloads 30MB of data in the JSON>
ME: As mentioned before, your approach is a performance killer
FE: No worries, we'll fix that in the next version. First let's see if anyone will be using this feature at all - maybe it's not even worth working on
ME: <thinking> I know I would NOT be using an app if it takes over half a minute to open up a chat channel. FFS I wouldn't even be using Slack if it took 30 seconds to open some other conversation, because for some reason it wanted to fetch all the uploaded files along with all the messages each time a channel is clicked on.....
ME: <thinking> this project is doomed :(11 -

Does anyone actually know css off by heart or would your webpage look like diarrhea if stackoverflow was down for the day14

Don't you just love it when backend/website team does changes and no one notifies anyone about it :)
Google rejected two updates claiming app is has the ability to play youtube videos in the background, but the app is more of a dashboard just to let admins view their data O_O
After digging around, it turned out those dudes changed a webpage we were viewing in the app, and included a youtube button, now when you play that video it stays running in the background.
Took me four days to find out that, and only after Google sent us what exactly was violating their policies.

Our company has internal webpage to request software, be it freeware or licensed.
Today, I found there "Software engineering bundle" designated for "software developers and data scientists who require advanced compute and data processing tools".
The software bundle contains PuTTY, 7-zip and Notepad++.6 -
My boss refuses to take any of recommendations for improving the companies out dated website because "our age market is 50-60" it has to be blan and simple.
Like seriously what the fuck, this is why no other generation is staying in the webpage more then 30 seconds!2 -
How many here know surge.sh? it seems each time I mention it somewhere, nobody knows it, checks it out and thanks me. It basically allows you to host a static webpage on their servers - for free and with custom domain if you wish. They are also the creators of Cordova/Phonegap.3

our university results are out
the webpage to check the results has only 3 input fields
roll number
date of birth
captcha
after checking the source code turnsout it doesn't need the date of birth and the most FUCKEDUP part is the captcha it uses is generated using javascript on the client side and literary checked using string1 == string2
I captured the post request its sending..
it only sends the roll number with some headers to the url
I wrote a quick python script to emulate the post request and got back the results of my entire college
note - the university I'm referring to has literally more than hundred thousand students under it, each and every student uses that interface to get his results4 -
I was reminded of people's posts about preferred text editors in another post, so I thought I'd do the same, but also add some super old technology that I used along the way.
The first text editor I consistently used was pico. I used it to write my first webpage at school.edu/~username. It was a natural choice, because the it was the default text editor in pine, which is what we would all use for our email after opening a serial connection to the college's Digital Unix server. Or if we were the lucky ones who had a computer in a wired dorm, telnet. My dorm was not wired until my sophomore year.
I got my first job in tech in 2001, working as a night shift tier-one support technician. By this time, most people were using web based email, or POP3, but I wanted to keep using pine (or elm, or mutt) because I was totally in love with the command line by this time, and had been playing with Linux for two or three years by now. I arranged a handshake deal with a guy in my home town who had a couple well-connected NetBSD servers, to let me have an account on one for email and web hosting (a relatively new idea at the time).
I recall telnetting into my shared hosting account from the HP-UX workstations we had in the control room. I would look at webpages on HTML conventions and standards, and I kept seeing references to this thing called vi. I looked into it more deeply, and found that it was a text editor, and was the reason I always had to CTRL-Z out of elm. I was already finding pico to be lacking, so I found a modern implementation of vi called vim that was already installed on the aforementioned NetBSD server, and read through vimtutor on it. I was hooked instantly. The modality massively appealed to me, and I found editing files to be an absolute delight, compared to pico, and its nascent open source offspring/successor, nano.
My position on that hasn't changed in the years that have passed since then.
What's your text editor origin story?1 -
I had to set up a Raspberry Pi just to display a webpage since it is inexpensive and I didn't have enough budget to get a case for it so I present my homemade case. Lol. It's zip tied to the box within another box.5

So on a sign up website for a programming competition they ask you to choose your screen size to fit the webpage....
Oh the irony1 -
I can do HTML, responsive CSS with JS but there is one damned thing blocks me all the time. What color?
How you guys choose your color on a webpage?14 -
I fell in love with Vue and Webpack! 😍😍😍
It is such a breeze to work with components and to be able to just change something and have everything instantly recompile and update on the webpage. I am actually enjoying doing the frontend more than the backend which is strange because I am a backend guy 🤣4 -
List of shit my superior said and wrote in the project:
1. Prefer to write "pure" SQL statement rather than ORM to handle basic CRUD ops.
2. Mixing frontend and backend data transformation.
3. Dump validation, data transformation, DB update in one fucking single function.
4. Calculate the datetime manually instead of using library like momentjs or Carbon.
5. No version control until I requested it. Even with vcs, I still have to fucking FTP into the staging and upload file one by one because they don't use SSH (wtf you tell me you don't know basic unix command?)
6. Don't care about efficiency, just loop through thousands of record for every columns in the table. An O(n) ops becomes O(n * m)
7. 6MB for loading a fucking webpage are you kidding me?
Now you telling me you want to make it into AJAX so it'll response faster? #kthxbye2 -
>Be client
>Have an issue with incredibly slow webpage load time
>Blame memcache issues
So... I look into the problem. Yes, the page either loads up fast, or times out. So, into the logs I go. Webserver is fine (except the timeout), PHP though... Error log is fine (just notices), but slow log shows the issue is the database (of course... its always the database... ugh)
So, checking the database, there is one ugly query that seems to be an issue. 5 joins and a huge where condition.
So I run EXPLAIN on the query and... Proceed to bang my head against the wall.
OF COURSE ITS SLOW YOU FU******, NONE OF YOUR TABLES HAVE ANY INDEXES.
What do they expect when the database has to always go down the whole table and do everything in memory, until it runs out and has to dump it all on disk and work with it there.
Ugh... Some clients... -
So you're telling me that the USB-C cable between my Galaxy S8+ and my PC can move data at 10Gbps... Then why is it that whenever I try to browse my photos on it, the icons load slower than a webpage through dialup, and the 'DCIM' folder can take up to a full minute to load all the file icons? 🤔6

Fucking kill me. I've just agreed to make a shitty fucking app that would be better as a Webpage, using shitty fucking technologies I don't understand, to do a thing that would be better handled by a third party.
You know why? The guy who asked me to do it is a good friend, and I'm the "best (only) code monkey" he knows. FUCK MY LIFE.
At least I'm getting payed7 -
Final project senior year...
Mistake 1: Chose a project suggested by the prof, who did not initially make it obvious that the project beneficiary would be a personal friend of his.
Mistake 2: Nine of us thought this project looked cool and all signed up for it.
Mistake 3: Looked at the code-behind provided for us and discovered that the web-app we were building was... programmed in Java, using StringBuilder to append HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and create its webpages. Which was then decoded and built into a webpage using some obtusely designed compiler.
Mistake 4: Decided to question the reasonability of said project to the prof.
Mistake 5: Did not quit the project as a group and do something else
We all graduated, I think, but a lot of C-'s were had. Fuck that class. -
I used to collect rubber ducks back in college. I was absolutely crazy about it and tried getting my hands on almost all different types available like the Punk duck, the Pirate duck, the Weed duck....and so on.
I met this girl who was into the same thing and we ended up banding together to create a sort of webpage where we'd write crazy and hilarious origin stories for each of these ducks. We'd go to great lengths to create ridiculous comic book style encounters between them and had a lot of fun doing it.
We dated for a while but it didn't last.2 -
Fire your whole fucking web team Bethesda
* Your design is a classic ipecac. Whatever the fuck you are doing doesn't in frontend doesn't justify the 4Mb of bandwidth I wasted on a single js file. Why the fuck can I see the whole fucking node_modules directory when looking at the sources?
I know this is supposed to be a webpage for a game development studio, but I'm seriously wondering if your budget would even get me a prostitute.
I'm a greedy fuck and want a free game. apparently your servers are only good enough to register me, but login is apparently too much to ask for. Yeah sure. Oh and also thank you for choosing an "incorrect username and password" error message by default, even though your fucking gateway timed out. Please be kind enough and punch me directly into my face next time. Not like I'll ever access that shit ever again3 -
My grandfather is at age 72 & don't know much about technology. He forward me this message on whatsapp bcz I'm a software engineer. He made my day...
What is the difference between http and https ?
Time to know this with 32 lakh debit cards compromised in India.
Many of you may be aware of this difference, but it is
worth sharing for any that are not.....
The main difference between http:// and https:// is all
about keeping you secure
HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure".. If you visit a
Website or web page, and look at the address in the web browser, it is likely begin with the following: http:///.
This means that the website is talking to your browser using
the regular unsecured language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the Website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.
This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an
Http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that means your computer is talking to the website in a
Secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.
You understand why this is so important, right?
If a website ever asks you to enter your Credit/Debit card
Information, you should automatically look to see if the web
address begins with https://.
If it doesn't, You should NEVER enter sensitive
Information....such as a credit/debit card number.
PASS IT ON (You may save someone a lot of grief).
GK:
While checking the name of any website, first look for the domain extension (.com or .org, .co.in, .net etc). The name just before this is the domain name of the website. Eg, in the above example, http://amazon.diwali-festivals.com, the word before .com is "diwali-festivals" (and NOT "amazon"). So, this webpage does not belong to amazon.com but belongs to "diwali-festivals.com", which we all haven't heard before.
You can similarly check for bank frauds.
Before your ebanking logins, make sure that the name just before ".com" is the name of your bank. "Something.icicibank.com" belongs to icici, but icicibank.some1else.com belongs to "some1else".
👆 *Simple but good knowledge to have at times like these* 👆3 -
At a previous job, boss & owner of company would waste hours of my time to show me, at his own desk, every small detail of some random feature he had fallen in love with on some random webpage he found, while saying "I don't want to disrupt your plans or anything, this is just something to keep in the back of your minds, as this would be a really nice thing to have, even tho none of the clients have asked for this and I have asked no one else for a second opinion, and I will most likely ask you to remove this feature in the future because I will finally have realized it wasn't that good an idea anyway."
Ok dipshit, what the fuck are we supposed to do with this information? Every week from this moment on you will ask whether we have found the time to implement this feature, even though you are fully aware that our schedule has no room for random, unplanned features and that we are already not able to meet the unreasonable deadline you pulled out of your ass two weeks into a development process that would end up taking 8+ months.
We are already overworked, we already work hours upon hours of unpaid overtime, and yet you still think it reasonable to pull us away from our work every other fucking day to talk about random extra features you want added, but don't want added to the roadmap because you want no delays... Fuck you, fuck your toxic attitude, fuck your meetings where you spend half an hour complaining about features we are still in the process of developing the backend functionality for (on test servers) not having the right font colour for the text, and fuck your legacy desktop software originally written in COBOL that you now want moved to "the cloud".
I would rather be unemployed and live as a hobo on the streets with a "will code for food" sign than work for you ever again. -

!Rant
Wrote a crawler and now has 18 million records in the queue. About 500.000 files with metadata.
1 month until deadline and we have to do shit many things.
Now we discover we have a flaw in our crawler ( I don't see it as a bug ).. We don't know how much metadata we missed, but now we have to write a script that scrapes every webpage that we've already visited and get that metadata..
What's the flaw you ask? Some people find it funny to put capital letters in their attribute names.. *kuch* Microsoft.com!! *kuch*
And what didn't we do? We didn't lower case each entire webpage and then, only then, search the webpage for data..5 -
Since I am running a home server and want to be updated on what the stats are, I did create a webpage where I can get the "renewed" information via ajax (not with jQuery) in every 5 seconds. The thing is that I don't get the "new" information. It's still the old information that keeps reshown in the div.
I checked the server.php file. It keeps getting regenerated. Since, that is the case, it isn't the server to blame. But more likely the client.php is the one that is causing problems. May someone know how to deal with that?23 -
Warning: this is not a rant. I'm too happy and excited to rant right now.
Today I "finished" my first webpage!!!
Wohooo!
It's the blog I'll use. It's currently offline for obvious reasons but I intend to put it out there when I have more confidence on my skills and some content to put in it. I only used django, html and css, and I really dig the looks of it. My gf liked it so it can't be that ugly.
I still have a lot to learn with django, and I will add a thing or two to this
webpage but now I feel confident enough to make the backbone of my first real project : a platform to ease essay writing for history students. It's something simple for students to keep track of their essays thesis and ideas but also the bibliography they'll use and the thesis and ideas they think each text they read for the essay has. I intend later to extend the functionality so it can store all the texts the user has used in some useful and atractive manner so they can keep track of everything they've read, share it and use it for later works.
I'm so fucking excited I can't fucking sleep (it's 3 am right now).13 -
I am building a website inspired by devrant but have never built a server network before, and as im still a student I have no industry experience to base a design on, so was hoping for any advice on what is important/ what I have fucked up in my plan.
The attached image is my currently planned design. Blue is for the main site, and is a cluster of app servers to handle any incoming requests.
Green is a subdomain to handle images, as I figured it would help with performance to have image uploads/downloads separated from the main webpage content. It also means I can keep cache servers and app servers separated.
Pink is internal stuff for logging and backups and probably some monitoring stuff too.
Purple is databases. One is dedicated for images, that way I can easily back them up or load them to a cache server, and the other is for normal user data and posts etc.
The brown proxy in the middle is sorta an internal proxy which the servers need to authenticate with to connect to, that way I can just open the database to the internal proxy, and deny all other requests, and then I can have as many app servers as I want and as long as they authenticate with the proxy, they can access the database without me changing any firewall rules. The other 2 proxies just distribute requests between the available servers in the pool.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced :D13 -
First Post since... Long I guess?
I got a new project!! I am currently creating a Webserver Framework in Java. I can create fully functional websites with a few lines of JSON.
(Look below)
Currently I don't have direct Javascript support, but I am working on installable modules. With those the Web-Admin can code little code fragments that can be shown (live) on the webpage.
I am so hyped because it does work <3
(Pictures of development might follow)
(Can I even call it framework? Hm dunno.. )14 -
step 1) open and browse producthunt for new dev tools to use and try out
.
step 2) opens dev tool/app's website *ooh nice landing page*
.
step 3) tries to find api and documentation, scrolls to bottom of the webpage
.
step 4) "we are still in private beta, sign up to be notified about the final release!"
.
step 5) lol *sighs* bookmarks tab before closing it
.
step 6) repeat step 1

Dev Diary Entry #56
Dear diary, the part of the website that allows users to post their own articles - based on an robust rights system - through a rich text editor, is done! It has a revision system and everything. Now to work on a secure way for them to upload images and use these in their articles, as I don't allow links to external images on the site.
Dev Diary Entry #57
Dear diary, today I finally finished the image uploading feature for my website, and I have secured it as well as I can.
First, I check filesize and filetype client-side (for user convenience), then I check the same things serverside, and only allow images in certain formats to be uploaded.
Next, I completely disregard the original filename (and extension) of the image and generate UUIDs for them instead, and use fileinfo/mimetype to determine extension. I then recreate the image serverside, either in original dimensions or downsized if too large, and store the new image (and its thumbnail) in a non-shared, private folder outside the webpage root, inaccessible to other users, and add an image entry in my database that contains the file path, user who uploaded it, all that jazz.
I then serve the image to the users through a server-side script instead of allowing them direct access to the image. Great success. What could possibly go horribly wrong?
Dev Diary Entry #58
Dear diary, I am contemplating scrapping the idea of allowing users to upload images, text, comments or any other contents to the website, since I do not have the capacity to implement the copyright-filter that will probably soon become a requirement in the EU... :(

I wanted to watch a movie with a far away friend. Stayed away from screensharing and used rabb.it (they spawn firefox in a container/vm and stream it to viewers). The movie i wanted wasn't in the list, so i navigated firefox to youtube. The video was blocked whereever firefox runs -.-
Got creative, pasted the youtube-link onto a download-site and opened the download-video-link in firefox. Firefox attempted to open the video -.-
I tried to create a minimal webpage with the video in about:blank and the devtools-console. Firefox was configured for american keyboard layout, in the end i had to copy-paste everything with non-alphanum-characters in it.
Shortly after the youtube-video was loaded and ready to be watched, i felt like god if he ever were to use a pc. Then i got the message "my roommates made me go out with them tonight" -.- With the knowledge that both of us wont spend the evening as planned all my accomplishments seemed to perish.2 -

Fuck Amazon! Or apple? Or both? I don’t know...
I just wanted to read a book on my iPad using the kindle app. I can read a free excerpt from the book but when I decided that I wanted to buy the book, I couldn’t. Not from within the kindle app nor the amazon app.
I read on the internet that it has something to do with the greediness of apple and that they want an astronomical cut from the sales. So amazon decided that they wouldn’t sell ebooks in the iOS-Apps.
I had to get my android phone and buy the book using the app I’ve installed there. I could’ve also opened the amazon webpage in my browser.
Fucking retards, I just want to read! And the worst thing is, I don’t even really know whom to blame!
Anyways, now I can read the book (zum Leben ist es schön aber ich würde da ungern auf Besuch hinfahren by Tilman birr if anybody is interested)4 -

Today's rant: JavaScript's type system.
I realized halfway through that I can't happily call JavaScript a "programming language" so just assume
alias programming="scripting"
I'm sure it's not actually as frustrating as it seems to me. Thing is, I'm used to either statically-typed languages or dynamically-typed languages that actually make sense. If I were to try to add an integer to something I'd forgotten was a string in Python, it'd immediately tell me "look, buddy, do you want me to treat this as a concatenation or an addition? I have no idea the way you've got this written." I've found that mistakes are a common thing with dynamic typing. Maybe I'm just not experienced enough yet, maybe it's really as stupid as it looks. JavaScript just goes "hey look I'm gonna tack all of these guys together and make a weird franken-string like '$NaN34.$&' because that's absolutely what we want here!" Then I run my webpage and instead of a nice numeric total like I wanted, good old JavaScript just went "Yep, I have no idea what I'm doing here I'm just gonna drop this here and pretend it's right." Now absolutely I do not expect my programming language to make correct assumptions and read my mind, otherwise JavaScript would be programming me and not the other way around. But it could at least let me know that I had incompatible types going on rather than just shamelessly going along with what it's doing. Good GRIEF, man, some of the idiosyncrasies of the EMCAScript language definition itself just make me want to punch a horse.6 -

Why do most apps have a password reset page that redirects to a mobile site ?
Why not give them a code they can enter into the app which would then show a password reset page within the app or a link which opens the page within the app.
Isn't it good practice to keep the user within the app?
Isn't it better to serve a token than serve an entire html webpage for the server.
I've been thinking about this but 90% people follow the website pattern and Idk why. Am I missing something ?
Please fill me in on it. (Even devrant uses the same pattern)5 -

But then I thought that I can just write a webpage which will trace the visitor IP. And send the url to the user.
Oh it's not for me. One of my friends who is also a partner and a client of mine is being harassed by his former business partner. He has sued him but the guy is in hiding but still posting bad news on his Facebook profile.
So my friend came to me for help. :311 -

But I really don't like the design and I suck hard on design.
Help, tips?
What color palette should I choose?29 -
Can we just stop to appreciate how god damn pretty and well crafted the webpage for this library is?
https://shopify.github.io/draggable...
I may be a semi-competent grunt but if theres one thing I appreciate, one thing I know *when I see it*, it's when someone takes the time to make a really gorgeous presentation.
One of my favorite UX examples right there.
Right up there with the design of Deadspace's UI. -
Well, being the only one in the house who can really solve computer problems:
We have a home nas in our network for filestorage and since a few weeks, we couldn't acces the device through windows explorer, so today I went on a exploration... First I tried the nas in a seperate different network, and it worked immediatly! oke great, try it in our main network again. And 'ofcours' it's not visible. So I go to the router webpage, and the page of our router just really sucks! So it was quite hard to find out if the NAS was attached or not, ad if so, under which IP. Finally found that, tried to connect to the webpage of the NAS, but got a timeout, ping would timeout too! I thought that that might have someting to do with that the NAS would connect via static IP. So I changed that to a dynamic IP, and I could atleast get to the website. After that I could try all the services and all of them worked perfectly, except for samba... And samba is the only service we actually use, so after that I thought that the device not showing up in network view in explorer had something to do with that the nas wouldn't show me a hostname in the router. So I tried to fix that, after an hour of trying to get the hostname to showup in the router, I just thought that I might try to connect to the nas via the IP. So I found via SO that I could just use //192.168.0.104 and I got into the samba server. So I guess that it was actually working all along 😒. After that I didn't want to bother to work with the hostnames, so I just gave the NAS a fixed IP, made a few shortcuts for my housemates and now it all works again.. For now at least...3 -
I fucking hate Visual Studio!
Don't get me wrong, from time to time I actually enjoy it but not today.
It all went south when I tried to add a new handler to an fucking old asp.net webpage. I had the access the 'Range' headed to stream bits of audio and video files to the client. It was working absolutely fine for the first hour and a half, after that point the fun started...
VS decided that my source code and the binaries won't match anymore. Everytime I tried to add a fucking breakpoint or debug this cunt of an error it would just refuse
The worst part that made me go apeshit was when I finally got a breakpoint and the exception. Some unknown fucking system dll just kept on killing my thread without a proper error message because it's optimized to the fucking moon and back!
Any ideas from the devs here on what's going on and how the fuck I can fix this?6 -
When your company forces you to program forms on the webpage with the sole intention of capturing your data then blasting you with emails, phone calls, and texts :( sometimes I really do hate my job2

Am I the only one who hates when I enter a simple question like "PHP memory limit" and the first link *isn't* the official PHP documentation? Who gives a flip about some fancy third-party webpage where they write a whole flippin' article about a simple directive?

What framework works well with Vue for front-end?
I'm redesigning my webpage but lack ideas and don't know much about frameworks.23 -
Backstory:
The webpage for (basically) the only movie theater chain is slow. The app, goddamn, is worse.
So I made an app to scrape the data and save it in a SQLite db for my use. However, there is one theater which doesn't belong to the same company. So I decided to also include it in the app.
But it sucks! I still have to find a way to automatically get the data from their shitty site.6 -

I don't understand why we have so many apps on the smartphones. I mean, we don't use "apps" for the desktop. We just use the browser and visit the webpage. Why can' t we do the same on smartphones? They do have mobile versions...
(In fact I do, but many ppl use apps like Twitter, Reddit, Facebook instead of just visiting the webpage). For me it's just waste of memory space.6 -
Been spending the afternoon working with our IT department helping them use the webpage they supposedly designed so they can help me with a separate issue. Turns out they were using IE...7

So, my current company builds a ERP system hand has a far to complicated database with one k tables and over 2k procedures. I started working there 3.5 years ago, well, first 2.5 years were educational. But I was mostly doing support work. From time to time I was tasked to do some interfaces ( around 15 currently I think) but since a few month I am just completely fucked up and don't know what to do. I still don't really get how this fucking huge database is supposed to work. I have 2-3 interfaces alto implement at the same time. Then I should create a app to allow users to stamp the personal and assignment times. Also I was tasked to create a html5 webpage ( never did something like this before) for also stamping times and some additional data to create a service report for customers on the fly. And finally I should create a asp.net based website for a dashboard overview which should be customisabke by our customers, which I also never did before. In the meantime I also have around 10-15 support tasks a week, and I don't see myself getting anywhere near finishing anything. But I am getting constantly approached by the boss and my team leader for not really getting anything done, even though they have no idea what the other one told me to do. And my boss has no idea if time management, he asked me how long a feature of the app would take and I told him at least two days and somehow he told my colleague I would be done in 4 hours. So currently I am permanently stressed and slightly depressed and I have no idea what to do, and I am just afraid of losing my job, because I am not able to finish my tasks.1

Linkedin looks like some devs went to Facebook, right clicked, saved a copy of the webpage and just edited some of the text. Why do we need "Like" and "Comment" features?
It was fine when it was just a professional networking site. Boring, sure, but at least it did the thing it was created to do.
It's all very cringe now.
PS I got my current job and will probably get my next job through Linkedin, but it still makes me cringe4 -
This is a general question to freelancers or devs who works on only projects, is this worth only £100 pounds:
A survey website with 19 pages. Questions changes based on previous answers. Must have drag and drop, mix and match functionality. It must be mobile friendly as well.
And we have to parse the data we get from survey to a nicely rendered webpage so the client can see it.
The deadline is 2 days10 -
Please do not flame me for makimg yet another Firefox rant. Besides, this is not about Quantum in particular and is definitely a self rant.
It was some time last month; i saw somebody here say something about Firefox Developer Edition, and I decided I wanted to be a big boy and try out big boy tools. I downloaded the tarball, unzipped it, and put the folder in my /opt/ directory. But it didn't work.
NO. My brain didn't work.
I forgot that Firefox comes default on Ubuntu, and I also seemed to inconveniently forgot that taskbar icons are not magic mind readers. I opened firefox and lo! Not a fuck changed; i was confused, but too busy to care enough to figure out the issue; I chalked it up to I wasn't meant to have nice things and went on with my life.
Fast forward to today, I got it up. And let me tell you, I am pissed with myself. I haven't opened a single webpage yet and I can already tell from the customization possible and the built-in tools alone that I'll be enjoying working in this browser very much.2 -
So our sales rep got this email from some random dude yesterday (jan 12) saying he wants a simple webpage with a video background and some shit and that it's upmost important that it's done by jan 21.
Ignoring the fact that we are busy af, i thought well yeah it's doable. A simple onepager with some nice elements and some shit, ez pz.
In the email he also sent a link to a website simmilar to what he wants (as an example i presume) and it turned out to be a fully functional blog, a medium sized webshop (by the looks of it) and a whole lot of other stuff.
He didn't state a budget but seeing his demands I'd say his budget isn't much more than a couple of hundred €.2 -
Why are project/tool webpages so useless...?
I mean, whenever I hear of a new tool/project I google its name. Of course, its dedicated webpage pops up as result #1. And EVERY TIME I find them looking nice, but quite confusing, riddled with all the buzzwords, nice phrases, promises of a better tomorrow,... but I'm yet to find a tool's webpage that explains what's that tool for and how to use it at least half as concisely and clearly as that tool's README.md in its GH/GL repo.
I mean, I can read every single word in the webpage, look at every picture/diagram, every fancy gif and still in absolute majority of cases I have no clue what that tool does.
Then I go to its GH/GL repo, read the first 2 sections of its README.md (takes me what, 2-4 minutes?) and I know all I need to now about the tool.
What's the point of those fancy webpages apart from containing docs and an SEO-tuned link to a README.md...?
Useless waste of storage and computing power if you asked me.rant pretty and dumb repository projects not clear tools description buzzwords readme.md useless webpages6 -
When I rented my server I uploaded my webpage (including resources like videos, images etc) which is about 150GB as .tar and extracted and setup all that stuff and deleted the backup from my PC. The uploading process took me about 4 days. I opened the site of my server provider and reloaded it.. Aaaaannddd whoops. All data gone.
On my server hosters webpage when you click the reinstall button for installing a Linux image you get returned to the main page of that server after it finished installing. If you then reload that page which basically only shows some monitoring diagrams and shit the server gets reset again.
Damn. I lost so much good porn on that day... -
when you cant be arsed to do icons so you just use emojis for button icons.
btn.textContent = "🗑️"
because icon sets now have their own apis (like what ever happened to icon fonts?), and documents explaining what scripts and commands to run to *install fucking plugins* on software written to *supplement* doc servers. plugins and software whos host site returns an SSL error. nice.
to use web icons. downloaded only on request. from other sites.
seems kind of eh, tower-of-baylon to me. like a bird landing on the electrical lines near your house might cause a blip and break one or two icons on your slick 2020 web app.
idk just seems unnecessary, like if you're small, your gonna want to embed your fonts on the webpage instead of overcooking things and hosting *a fucking server* just to serve an api for fucking *icons*. and if you're large you're gonna reduce those requests anyway12 -
I hate iOS so much. Just hit a nasty bug where "optimizer" in browser sometimes randomly replaces a function with a number. Like WTF? Was developing a webpage working on iOS too easy, so they enabled a hard mode where some of your functions may turn on you?1

I heard all of them at least once per month. Now I’m recovering at home and my friends are asking why I’m tired. -
Here some more information to despise Apple.
In the past few weeks I keep having a problem making the iMac connect to whatever website/host, so I had to rerun whatever I had to do: fetching from github, push to github, connecting to a LAN server, pinging to know to IP, accessing a webpage and so on.
Luckily enough, browsers tend to request again if an error occurs.
At my job, I upload app files to servers, like GooglePlay and AppStoreConnect.
For those who don't know, Google makes you upload the app through the browser (among other ways) while Apple requires you to upload your app either through XCode. No other possible ways.
Whenever XCode requires an update, the authentication is required, but the authentication server cannot be reached for at least 5-6 tries.
Then I have to upload the app and just to be ready to hit the "upload button" it takes like 3-4 minutes, which might be completely useless if a network error occurs.
How hard is it to make your fucking app-loader to try again at least a few times?6 -
How to learn HTML?
1. Download a plugin called "Save Page WE" for Firefox.
2. Go to a webpage you want to modify:

3. Right click and select: Save Page WE -> Save Standard Items
4. Edit page on your computer.
5. Upload to GitHub public repository for viewing:

6. Share preview link by prepending https://htmlpreview.github.io/? to said page URL:

So a follow up on my post yesterday, I had a brain flash.
Basically it bypasses a webpage with JS that redirects the browser on mobile browsers so I can actually get to the download page for the anime.
Before I still had to paste the starting but now I just download the anime site to get all the latest updates.
The key was actually getting the information from the page. What I realized was I don't need Title or Episode #. All I need is the URL because it's in there (at least for now). The site probably should've used ids instead but :)2 -
Why is mobile development still a thing?
Hear me out. All these simple apps, like shopping centre discount, eshops, vinted, other kinds of webapi consumers. Many have a website and a phone app.
Why??? Why the phone app? What's wrong with just embedding your responsive webpage into a webview and call it a day ffs?
I mean, maintenance becomes trivial and there's no split brain. No? What am I missing?
Not talking about apps that rely on android/ios api, for like camera, calls, storage access, sensors etc9 -

It's been long time that I use the JavaScript blocker add-on by default, and I pretty much get accustomed to see and perceive the web as broken styling trash for most of the times.
And this broken state(on non-SPA websites) isn't even justified because CSS has never been as powerful as nowadays. So... WTF?
On my side, I never let the absence of JavaScript ruin the template/style of a webpage u_u12 -
So I wanted a newer Linux OS for doing certain things at work. I went for Kubuntu 21.04 as it would have reasonably newer software and had the tools I needed for managing exfat partitions. I installed it on a second drive and everything went smoothly. I booted to the OS and it said it needed to do updates. Okay, lets do that. I started them and walked away.
I came back later and it had finished. I rebooted the machine because I needed to run windows. It came up to a prompt and a grub command line. WTF. I am like oh fuck, it didn't just fuck me out of my windows install. So I rebooted into the BIOS. I looked and it now had switched the drive I installed Linux on as the boot drive. That is weird. So I switched the M.2 drive to boot. It went right into Windows.
Kubuntu 21.04 installed on second drive as intended, switched the boot drive to the second drive, and then fucked itself on first update. And people wonder why non-techies don't run Linux. Its a pile of shit only a masochist would love. Because we are the only ones who can possibly sort out shit like this.
I know its probably a webpage away from fixing, but I needed to work in windows and could not be fucked to fix it. Its a distraction to actually getting my work done. Just disappointed in the entire ecosystem.8 -
I just can't get over the fact that the .com domain I have been eyeing for is still out of my reach. This name popped to my brain after brain storming over a week when I started making sites when i was a teen.
The domain has been sitting there unused with a basic webpage containing some ugly web design from 90s era.
I have been eyeing it for over 6 years now and just found out he renewed it for yet another 3 years!
I don't want to approach him about it either, I'm not that desperate for it that I'd pay millions for it.
The wait continues...
Anyone been in a similar situation?3 -
College broke my school VM by "accidentally" pushing a policy to just me that disables being able to start anything after logging in (no DWM or Explorer, either, so just login, then infinite abyss.) Fine, nothing I can't fix, i got around shit like this in middle school. Reboot... can't get to the school's webpage. No DNS...?
No.
Windows disabled all the network services. Why? Defender didn't start, is why. Why not? School broke it. Goddammit. Gotta fix that.
There, are we ready now? NO, OFFICE ATE SHIT. FUCK, LEMME REBOOT AGAIN...
How about now? Everything works? Cool, let's get some work done. Download assignment, and... file's busted. Redownload? Nope. One more try? Nothing.
I am going to flip my shit I swear to fuck -
Wow, I thought Australia's subjects were up-to date with modern technology, but as my year 11 IPT course has proven... No.
Genuine Questions from it:
• Where are Web pages stored?
Most web pages are dynamically generated, so... RAM?
•Locate one webpage that uses ASP. Save a copy of this webpage (file name must = asp.mht)
Chrome Doesn't Even Support that as a save able file format any more!!!!
•Visit the webpage [error 404 anyway why write it]
Wow I can click hyperlinks I thought it was just a fancy color added to the text :|
•Add this webpage to your favorites. Supply one (1) screenshot showing this webpage as one of your favorites.
I ask; Who hasn't bookmarked a webpage in their life at the age of 17, and who actually calls them favorites.
•Press the "Back" Button to view the page you were previously on, take a screen shot to prove you doing so.
I am a rebel, I used my magic fingers to press the button without a mouse (keyboard shortcut)
•Press the "Forward" Button to view the page you were on before you went backwards, take a screen shot to prove you doing so.
I never would of guessed :|
•Take a screen shot after opening multiple tabs in Internet Explorer
...
•View the HTML source of the webpage www.google.com, and save a screen shot
Why not the actual file, really? bloat much?
•Take one screen shot of your Internet Explorer Search History
Stalky much?
•What is a Web browser and what tasks does it perform?
Well.... Do you have a page for indepth analyse? Or do you literally what me to say "It let's you load stuff from dat interwebz, via requesting content from a server"
•Define what JavaScript is in relation to web pages
Are we talking server side? or client?
•Define what CSS is in relation to web pages
Do I even need to say fellow ranters ;) -
What is with the current trend of hiding the content of the webpage that you have gone to visit under a 'continue reading' button on mobile?
For example, Huffington post article. Content all loads, then dissapears behind 'continue reading' button, showing only the first sentence.
I came here to read the article. I'm sure I want to continue reading..
Who the hell thought this was good design???

Webdev, I should send a form to a site that gets the results and redirects back to the webpage that stands in an invisible form data (very weird!).
Okay, I did...
When I was finished the site didn't redirect to the URL I gave in the form, instead it showed parts(!) of the webpage's HTML.
Okay, I was a little bit surprised and mailed the dev of this weird thing. He answered with this:
"In this Internet thingy, you know, URLs start with 'http://', it's the newest shit!"
Holy shit! Is he serious!? Who the heck programmes such a site that needs a 'http://' in the beginning? (Does this guy know about https?)
And why, why!?, did it show contents of the target URL's site if you give it one without http!?
I, I will go now and get a mild tea, yeah...3 -
Working on a webpage. Using Flexbox for a 1-column layout. Now I need to display two Divs next to each other and I regret every lifechoice.
Why is it such an impossible task to put two divs in perfect alignment next to each other. Why oh lord have thou forsaken me.14 -

Is there something you find genuinely cool and would recommend ? Some webpage, program, OS, library or anything ?
I mean hey. There are SO MANY reaaaally cool things I didn't know until last few months.. Things I'd be so grateful for if I knew them earlier. I'll list some of them and I just know you have few of yours too. Feel free to educate the rest!

An asynchronous service in android which sends an Http request to a webpage to store its content every 3 seconds regardless of its response, and runs forever?
What the fuck where you thinking. You just killed my phone!!2 -
So the EU plans to make an "upload-filter"-law.
Actually this means that every service, every provider literally everyone has to check everything which is going to be uploaded on a webpage if there is an copyright violation and so on.

Clients are total assholes, we all know it, just sharing my another depressed instance.
> be me, freelancing.
> client sends in an image of a webpage
> le me gently ask "What is the functionality here since this has a form?"
> Client explains
> OK let's do this because I have other stuff to do as well.
> Sends in demo
> Client: "Numerous typos, send again"
> Okay, sends again.
> Client Rages: "This still has typos. I thought you were a good developer. You look like a has-been.
I promptly quit the project and tried to explain to him the difference between a "demo" and a finished project. He was supposed to check the functionality of the fucking form, which he didn't.
Got a call to finish the project, him explaining nobody is working for him for given budget, he can't afford anybody in this town (literally), and I am not going back.3 -
How fucked up are you,
when your vp of engineering doesn't even know how to show phpinfo webpage to test server setup.
and..
change ode directly in production server,
then messed up and using excuse :
" I don't know because i am a frontend developer "
Then why you become a VP of Engineer !3 -
When I was in 6th grade, and we were learning HTML, and I realised the power my fingers suddenly held as Chrome (ugh) loaded up my frst webpage with some basic styling. At that moment, I understood the extensibility, the dyanmicity (My English teacher would kill me), the pure awsomeness I could do with a text file. In three years (now), I finally made a calendar that works which has comments, is split into dedicated files, works, is clean and written in D, and works.

How come that im absolute shit when it comes to designing a webpage but i can make really fucking cool looking android apps, when they are essentially the same thing1
-
I ran my PHP script file in Firefox, only to be greeted by everything else but my webpage. I scanned through the errors and looked them up on Google. As I was only restricted to a basic text editor, I had no choice but to prepare myself to look through hundreds of lines of code spanning across different files in my project.
Minutes passed, found nothing. An hour has passed, and I can feel my brain power fading away into oblivion, but I still found nothing. I took a stab in the dark and made a few changes in the code, hoping that it'd solve the problem, only to be slapped with a big fat 'nope' in the browser. I lost all hope for the day and decided to give it a rest and come back tomorrow to try again.
New day, new me, fresh new energy to tackle the code! But after one failed attempt at debugging and I was back to the same state as yesterday.
But... at the corner of my eye, something at the end of a line caught my attention. I moved my cursor to that position, pressed the key on top of my pinky finger down, saved the file, and ran the script. It worked.
Who knew how problematic a single missing semicolon could be :34 -
Fuck. I really hate it when someone has a domain I'd like to have, and doesn't do shit with it. Come on! A webpage that says "Live soon"?!
It's like having a subscription to the gym and never go to the gym. Total waste of money and opportunity for someone else to use the domain, just for the sake of "There is the slightest possibility that I maybe want to do something with this domain in the future".
Fuck this shit.3 -
I've been using dotnet and aspnetcore for years. I've heard people complain about MVC but I never really saw the problem. The controllers are easy to set up for basic endpoints, I have my domain models and DTOs, and our views I guess is our standalone webpage just consuming jsons.
Only now I'm having to work with an *actual* aspnet MVC stack - server-rendered cshtml and all - and it's dawning on me like a truck what people were actually referring to.
Out of all the issues I've had so far, they have all been due to black box enigmatic voodoo because don't worry about it, the framework takes care of it - it should just work. But what if it doesn't? I have no idea because the trail ends at the bit that should just work.
I should know better than to criticize an entire framework and paradigm made by devs with vastly superior experience and expertise than me, and my issues are absolutely due to being new and unfamiliar with this, but imagine coming up with an architecture to obsessively separate the MVC concerns, then you make cshtml.2 -

I want to learn app development but, due to some reasons I cannot buy a laptop now. And my current laptop is way too old to support android studio. So I planned to utilize this time to learn web development.
I completed HTML5 and CSS3 and now currently I'm learning JavaScript.
I have made a website which can be used to put emojis in your webpage.
Although, the JS section will be added in further version( after I've finished learning 😅), still it can be used by copy and pasting the cdn and image names.

Me: Okay, so we have a young girl, with the motivation of The Power of Friendship, the theme of Crime, with the story structure of Dan Harmon, and set in a Fantasy genre.
Coworker: Dan Harmon? Improvise. Wait... A young girl, on a Purge planet who befriends Morty... I mean a young boy from a different universe.
Me: *a minute later* Wait a second, that was an episode of Rick and Morty!!
Coworker: I did that on purpose because you said Dan Harmon.1 -
So i just saved myself like a day of work.
My boss wanted me to make a new endpoint for a webpage I'm working. Ok, spend yesterday afternoon planning it out.
Come in this morning, ready to write it. Look through our api docs. Turns out we have almost the exact endpoint i need, minus 1 simple field. Add the field (1 line of code).
Everything is looking good, I'm a day ahead of where i planned to be. I just wish my boss had told me of the endpoint earlier.
Planning and good docs pay off. -
Finally an error I can understand with ease. Up until now, I’ve been getting these weird arbitrary errors that make no sense to me.
I tried to wake my MacBook and the thing hung. I have it some time, and it restarted, restored all windows, and let me know it was a “Sleep Wake Failure”.
Honestly I don’t mind getting an error occasionally. But when the error says “UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP” while I’m gaming on Windows, it annoys me.
Also having WebKit crash the webpage on me without telling me what happened also gets me mad.
TL;DR: Make understandable error messages.2 -
What the actual fuck is wrong with companies that have websites with useless buttons. And i mean useless like a "Click here for our api documentation" which takes you to a contact form that you fill out and wait 3 days for someone to email you a link to a publicly accessable webpage on the same fucking website, a link that is just an extra tier on the contact forms link 😠 or they make their website a motherfucking labyrinth just to find the api documentation or a phone number to contact them.
-
Alright, if you don't make apply a little feature, which you already use in your webpage, in your API, I'll have to fucking parse that shit.
Screw you, I'm sacrificing my free time... -

Front-end web development is like a fucking cancer to me right now
I need the following behavior from my development environment if I don't want the webdev experience to destroy my sanity and tempt me into suicide by making me waste my valuable lifetime configuring shit that is ultimately meaningless to the software I'm trying to create:
- I should be able to open the webpage in the browser at localhost:<some-port>
- the page should refresh immediately as I save my files
- I should be able to import node modules installed with npm without using a script tag linking to some CDN (for instance, I want to do a get request with axios instead of the fetch API)
- I should be able to do this without spending more than two minutes reading the documentation for a tool that would enable me to do it, ideally without ever coming even close to touching a configuration file
Right now I know about browser-sync and webpack, or webpack-dev-server or some such fucking shit fuck fucking fuck.
browser-sync seems to fulfill most of these needs, except that I can't seem to bring npm modules into my application and import them. Webpack seems to be able to do this, but at the cost of slowly throwing my life away reading documentation for over-complicated configuration files that do not aid me in actual software creation and therefore do not interest me and never will, all in the hope that I *may* at some point dig out enough shit to find how to do such a use case (i.e. seamless, smooth web development) that to me feels reasonably common and expected.
Is there some tool that enables me to do *seamless*, pleasurable web development without the hassles of over-complication and over-engineering? Is there some hidden command for webpack that allows me to run such simple shit without ever needing to edit some pointless configuration file?
Please, I beg of you, let me know.8 -

How on earth can you have a good relationship with your client if he can't tell the difference between an App and a website.
Seriously, wtf.
Were not in the "I didn't realize it was an app-looking webpage on Chrome" case, which is fairly common and even normal, if the webpage is designed to behave and look like a native app.
We're in the "I didn't know apps and browsing webpages were different things" case.
Seriously, some people have the ability to fucking use, breathe and even master some technologies without getting to know even the most basic fundaments.
We might stop bettering our UXs. We need to make things more complicated and make users figure out things by themselves. -
Thank god for Git. I fucked up my webpage beyond repair and I am not an expert in html div alignments. I pulled in a commit I did an hour ago and at least got the page back to normal. I don't even want to imagine what devs did before the days of source control. D:
Tomorrow will be spent learning how to better follow closing </div> tags. :(4 -

Hm, this example is very complicated.
Aw yeah, I'll never need Android Studio again!

Oh for fuck's sake, why is everything working except displaying a webpage in non-fullscreen dynamically and implementing it in my widget tree? It is unusable for me if this doesn't work but I want to use it! >:(2 -
Anyone know a good open source web page builder? If there's a laravel integration would be better.

How many of you use FTP everyday to work?
Well today the whole GoDaddy FTP server for EVERY website I manage was off.
Had to work through the webpage editor (a notepad provided by godaddy/cpanel), it kinda works, but I can't even use ctrl+s to save since it's in the browser :/9 -
I worked 2012-2016 for a big telco company in my country and there was this HTTPS webpage with an iframe rendering any url you passed over the ?url query param plus a header with the company's logo.
I was on a meeting with some friends in charge of social media and they found it for a user report.
Unbelievable 🤷🏻♂️ I remember I tried the page's url itself and it rendered a loop of the header with the company's logo 😂 -

I’m so sorry if this is the place for questions. I’m terrified of stack overflow and have been searching for a week for a solution and can’t find one. This is for React.js people.
I was tasked to create a webpage with react. The limitation is, they did not wanna adopt the node.js dependency. I said ok, I’ll figure it out. You can inject react, material UI, and babel with script tags in HTML, then put ur lil components in it. I did that and it works beautifully.
However, now I have to write tests for this. I think it’s actually impossible without a way to render React, so I have to use the browser, or node, right? I convinced my boss to allow me to use a node.js container just for testing, which I thought would make my life easier.
I don’t know how to render this thing with node. It’s just an HTML file that pulls react via script tags, and idk how to serve html with node. Additionally, none of the React testing libraries seem to support testing a system that wasn’t designed to be served with node, at least not easily. My gut tells me that the complication with how things are imported contributes at least a little to this (dependencies pulled via script tags in the HTML file and made available to react through global const variables).
I could be wrong about any of this — im fairly new. But how tf do I go about testing these react components? For reference, if you go to Reacts docs, there’s a section called “add react to a page in one minute” that’s pretty much what I did.20 -
!rant, more of an incredulous/cruelly amused "you had ONE job..."
so: biggest IT/PC/electronics store in my (and neighboring) country. their webpage, of course with the function to buy online, because of course.
the big green "Buy" button does nothing. doesn't work. doesn't react. I keep clicking it multiple times, shorter, longer, etc, because maybe their JS scripts are just shit so they slow.
nope.
okay. open devtools, JS console.
hover over the button: "Error: isMobile is not a function".
click the button: "Error: isMobile is not a function"
WAT.
search for isMobile in the script.
173 occurences.
fuck this.
console: isMobile = function(){return false;}
because I'm not on my phone.
click the "Buy" button.
works flawlessly.
...HOW?
THE WHOLE PAGE IS AN ESHOP YOU COMIC RELIEF INCOMPETENTS! =D
173 uses of non-existing function that blocks business-critical feature, THE ONLY CORE FEATURE FOR WHICH YOUR SITE EVEN EXISTS, and NOBODY, not the dev who fucked it up, NOT EVEN QA, noticed it??? =D =D
if I was the boss of the devs, or even boss of the whole company...
git blame
...and then i'd go the whole chain from the dev who caused the bug, through all of the QA people who "tested" that version before deploy, and I would personally, on the spot, fire each and every single one of them.
mainly because of who knows how much money this stupid not even a proper bug lost them.
but secondarily, because clearly none of those people give a single shit (n)or have an idea how to do their jobs.
=D =D
yeah but I was a good guy, filed a bug report in the "Complaints" section of their Contact form.
it goes to some call-center-like peon, so it starts with a sentence "forward this to your site's dev people outright to file as a bug, thank you".
but... HOW.... =D
HOW can you let something like this through? =D
the bottleneck of your whole user interaction, which forms first of the three steps OF THE MAIN AND MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTION of your whole business... =D

...does not compute =D

Any SUPER AWESOME patient... JS PRO that wants to help me with a few problems it would be appreciated..
Okay so I'm having trouble with JavaScript and this can apply to other languages but for now focus on JS. so I'm learning how to manipulate the DOM and I don't really know how to start I picked out a tutorial but I'm afraid I wont learn a lot from it. here are my concerns and yes they don't all have to do with the DOM
> I don't know how to learn without mimicking what the person is doing and when I try something that's related I cant use the related information and techniques because I either don't remember, dont want to do the literal same thing for something slightly different or dont know how and somethings not working even though it should be.
> I do it one way and when people offer to help its just me getting responses of how it could be done completely different and I dont understand why either way should be used
> Why should I have to generate a webpage or div if I can just use HTML5
>whats the difference between JSON and Arrays???????????
>I am not good with arrays, lists, dictionaries, (I'm stretching to python with lists and dictionaries)
>I recently tried the basic quiz project and it was more complicated and fun than I was giving credit for but I want to do it a different way to show myself I learned but I cant because I dont understand how the person managed to loop through the entire array printing the individual questions and answers to the div. like I understand the parts that use the html tags in the code but I dont know how when or what to use it all
>any good javascript/dom resources?
At this point Im just stressing because all I want is a basic skillset with JS but I dont feel like Im learning anything and I dont know how to apply my knowledge or improve upon the programs ive been learning from or trying to make. and arrays have been tripping me up to especially since I have no clue what the difference is between them and JSON and why I should use one over the other and dont get me started how shit I am with manipulating them. FUCK IM STUPID10 -

So I am redeveloping a website I made for work when I first started all this a year and a half ago. Part of the project was integrating with a marketing automation suite through an OAuth2 authenticated API - compounded by the fact that no one has heard of the thing, so there aren't plugins (wordpress last time, Drupal this time) or the ones that are there are woefully out of date/have no functionality.
Anyway, I've been dreading doing it. Last time it took me over a week (maybe two), and the solution was a total cludge fest - I had to do a load of stuff manually and it constantly broke anyway.
This time? Took me half a day, maybe less. All the user has to do is click a button and give the webpage permission in the automation suite (as you'd expect) and everything else is automated. It doesn't break, it doesn't fall over and it works very nicely.
It's the first time, apples to apples, I can see how far I have come, and I love it.
Now if only the API itself i am connecting to wasn't shite!2 -
I have to download 500 images from bookreads to help a friend out. Thought I'd use this opportunity to learn about web scraping rather than downloading the images which'd be a plain and long waste of time. I've got a list of books and author names, the process I wanna automate is putting the book name and author name into the search bar, clicking it, and downloading the first image the appears on the new webpage. I'm planning to use selenium, BeautifulSoup and requests for this project. Is that the right way to go?9

My apologies, Mistaken WK177 for "Last Successful project"
Now my least Successful project:
It was in the summer of many years ago.
I created a social network site for a camp site where I used to go. People were able to upload their own profile picture and adding some text to their profile page... with google analytics I was able to see what pages were used the most:
the webpage about: the opening and closing hours of facilities
after a year we shut it down because it was not being used.
And of course facebook started getting popular. -
why i decided to be a Fullstack web dev?
i see this website in my childhood and it left a mark on me very deeply :)

Support for Windows 7 ended this week which means that security or software updates will no longer be provided by Microsoft.
Windows 7 will continue to run however it will be more vulnerable to viruses and malware. The best way to remain secure is to use the latest operating system available.
Microsoft have a dedicated webpage for user questions, next steps and detailed advice. 👇

It was compulsory to study logo at the school, class 4. Was around 10 at that time. Love what I could make the turtle do with commands. FF 2 years, learnt HTML in school. As app developer I know, there is a 30-40% fee according to the platform for selling this.
Then I tried on the webpage, my thought behind was, your getting the full money. No possiblity there.
Is that because of tax reasons? I would be glad to support you.10 -
Printer shit continued: So we got this great Lenovo Ideapad with a Windows, so why not print from there? Installed driver from webpage and really printed nicely.
Then I removed ton of Lenovo's crapware + McAfee (leftovers luckily were cleaned by McAfee's tool), so that this shitty device could be used reasonably - device would deserve rants on its own. I heard I should not allow users to inject arbitrary text into my webpage without sanitizing it. Is it a clean solution to just eval it on the (node) server, and if it runs not post it because it's obviously JS and not just text?

I am building a side project to build a recommendation system for research papers. Since it's my first attempt, any tips? Also, my plan is to get it in the cloud, build a separate webpage to summon data from it. Honestly, most of it is three-fourths imagination, one-fourth google queries. The cloud idea is solely to provide it means to train real time.
I plan on using Python for this, other than the html/css frontend.
As someone who is very new to such a project, what should I know before I start?

YAYYY! I MADE IT!!
After several nights of playing with my new and very first custom mechanical keyboard, at last I could successfully get my long-time-dreaming keyboard!
I read the guilds, tutorials, even youtube videos to get walked through the process:
- I started with building my own layout on different websites, since they said that it would be easier to use online tools than to write codes by yourself in order to build your own keymappings, but the UI/UX of the first one I tried was so bad that it took me a great deal of time to understand how to use it and working on it is even more time consuming. Later I found another webpage which was less recommended, but could help me to do that a lot easier.
- Then, the result was compiled to a firmware file, which would be flashed into the kb's controller. Loading the file into the board was also tiring and got me exhausted totally! I tried all the "lazy" recommended ways (using Windows softwares) but received the same error all the time. When I almost lost all the hopes, I'd come to the least recommended way: typing a few command lines on Linux. And it worked! The keyboard just do what I want it to do miraculously.
What I learnt: never do complicated things on Windows, because they are suuuuuper simple on Linux!
P/S: Sorry for the bad lighting in my room and the tiny spacebar (the spacebar size is 7u which I don't have one right now). I just need a beautiful keycap set to make it perfect.5 -
My previous job was Engineer ( Ops part of DevOps), supporting the devs with VMs, configurations, dev and test environments, CI maintenance, DBA, DB-dev and such, it was sexy.

I'm making a distributed system for my exam project, but the client have a weird idea when it comes to the webpage, that we havent learned about...

This is a question and a rant
I have to get temperature readings from an andriod app written in ionic angular to a webpage written apache wicket... No, I don't have any control over either stack.
The kicker is the wicket app isn't even run properly attached to a domain, it's just run from a box at the client and then the client machines connect through <server ip>:8080/appname
Which means I can't solve my problem by simply having the website and app on the same domain and then use local storage...
I have tried
Ionic
window.postMessage({ type: 'temperatureData', data: tempFormatted }, '*');
Test it from this page
<!-- index.html (web page) -->
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<title>Web Page</title>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Temperature Data</h1>
<p id="temperatureData">Loading...</p>
<script>
// Listen for messages from the Ionic app
window.addEventListener('message', (event) => {
if (event.data.type === 'temperatureData') {
// Update the temperature data on the page
document.getElementById('temperatureData').textContent = event.data.data;
}
});
</script>
</body>
</html>
Which does not work, the page fails to pick the data.
So my rant is the situation. M question is does anyone have any ideas?7 -

I am trying to find a post where someone asked for an analogy of Javascript to something in the home. I want to get the comment I made and save it. I was particularly proud of that comment.6 -
Whenever I try to copy any text from any webpage & create a list, there are a lot of things to do. Switching multiple windows, ctrl+c, ctrl+v, then again do the same for the next selected text.
Is there any Chrome extension out there to solve this exact problem? Less action to copy-paste texts?
Or should I make one? How many of you are likely to use something like this? -
I need an idea for a JS coding challenge for a job interview that a poor unlucky person is going to take after me, 'cause i'm leaving..
Requirements: it must be simple, but not simple enough for my other two colleagues. Aka no webpack, no framework, plain js inside a webpage.
My other two colleagues don't even know how to do an array.forEach() or literally how to code in general. They are copy-pastah programmers.
How can i do that without offending anyone?3 -

I want to make a web development and software development freelancing business. I had a great idea of a portfolio website for that business with a blog but the best way to make it it's using WordPress. I'm determined in making my own theme but I had a very dynamic and solid idea like adding some Easter egg videogames inside the webpage but with WordPress I can't do that. Another issue it's the time it would take to make this super website. Should I make the website as simple as possible and deploy it or wait until it's mostly done and deploy it?6 -
So I a using the ssh installed with git on Windows.
I am trying to forward a port on my internal network server which is also my ssh server. I have exposed my network server on a forwarded port on my router. When I try to forward using this command I get a connection reset on my web service on my server.
ssh -nNT -p <port on router> -L 8000:192.168.0.22:8000 <sshuser@router>
I can log into ssh normally. So I am really confused. the 192.x.x.x address is the internal ip of the server. On a browser I try to connect to the 127.0.0.1:8000. It says the connection is reset. I assume it is being refused. So it tries to connect to something, but it fails.
I can connect to the web server from within the internal network via 192.168.0.22:8000. Really confused as to what is failing here.5 -
Should I switch to Chrome Headless/Puppeteer for webpage header+footer scraping or stick with Express+Cheerio?1
