I used to love me some Yanni songs when programming. Especially World Dance, Santorini, Nostalgia, Standing in Motion, Rainmaker. It's also easier to concentrate when there is no strong vocalist interrupting your train of thoughts.

Of course you can always go to rock music or screamo if you're trying to stay awake but it's harder to concentrate on the code.

    Two words: Pink. Floyd.

I listen only good old music, including (but not limiting to) Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Motörhead, Iron Maiden, RATM, SOAD,... during coding sessions.

It really depends on the person what music will be nice when programming. For me its Nujabes, pink floyd, sigur ros, even rave music mixes sometimes :-D.

@rant my ability to focus on a task is directly proportionate to how mental the music is. Dissonance and odd time signatures help me focus for some reason. Anything nice or calm just annoys me and I end up coding in silence. Surely I'm not the only one, right?!

One exception is IBM 1401, a user's manual. The instruction manual for an IBM 1401 set to music. It's awesome!

    Give this a whirl:

No matter what you listen too, listening in form of albums is the best for maintaining focus :)

I also use YouTube for this. Lately I've been typing queries like "deep house mix". I used to listen to psytrance/goa but that has been too intense lately. (for coding)
