Count me as a fan of the no GUI camp. Depending on the type of work you do, not using a GUI at all can be a viable option.

Of course, if your work is graphic design it's probably not the best choice, but for certain workflows you totally can have a GUI-less environment and be perfectly productive.

You have mail clients, instant messaging, web browsers, lots of tools.
