TIL: There are phones with 512GB and even 1TB internal storage... WHO THE FUCK NEEDS THAT MUCH STORAGE IN THEIR PHONE?!! Your phone becomes an external 1TB SSD with a touchscreen at that point...

But seriously, unless your phone is your external hdd (I do this with my iPhone - yes, iPhone can do this too 🙃) I honestly don't see how 1TB for a phone would actually be of use.

My fucken notebook has a 256gb ssd and 8gb ram..

@xaero this, as use cases of phones expand so do their requirements. Many people use phones as their primary devices.

Technically you can get by without a high end phone too, you simply have to not buy it. I really don't see why manufacturers making better and fancier devices is an issue.

Have 64GB and its pretty much full now.
Spotify takes about 25 GB, Apps 11 GB and if I could, I would just put 500 GB of BluRays on it.
If I hadn't compressed my Photos/Videos, they would take about 125 GB alone.
But 1TB is still utopian to me. At that point the phone really is a external SSD. For such stuff SD cards are also great.

It's probably cool to habe 1TB, but then I still wouldn't put any critical data on it (like Photos) since the internal storage is most likely inacessable when the device dies.
It is also a problem, should I reset my phone for rooting purposes.

@xaero @RememberMe @LinusCDE you see... with higher capacity NAND memory either the price has to go up or the number of read/write cycles before it breaks has to go down and since the phone does not cost 2700€ but 1700€ I would say the second thing happened

People used to only need 1mb, then tech changed, things got bigger and more complex (and people got lazier)

My phone has 256GB of storage in it. No SD card, all internal. Blazing fast too. The reason why I bought it is mainly for MultiROM or equivalent. And while I do have a file server already, 32GB or even 64GB didn't cut it to store my music, pictures and movies. I don't always have access to the file server and don't want to always have to stream from it either. Hence, a shitton of local storage.

I'd buy it if the RAM size was big enough (and if I had the money), root, then use as a low-power cruncher for super long operations

@irene why not? With that RAM, processing power, and storage I can do stuff I can't on cheaper phones eg. high end video editing, which definitely does require a ton of oomph. Heck, back in 2012 I was absolutely blown away at being able to make music on my iPad with Garageband and great sounding virtual instruments (voice synth, Magellan, etc.). Seven years later I can do the same in FL studio mobile on my el cheapo Samsung phone. Without the iPad being relatively powerful all that wouldn't have gained traction so early. As a hardware manufacturer you generally want to stuff as much as possible into a device and let people figure out how to use it (also, good for marketing, but eh, why not).

I can edit in class, in the metro, when I just want to chill, when I'm out in the cafe and my friend's taking too long in the bathroom, in the airport and on flights...the list is endless. Moving the process to a phone allows me great convenience. I have a decently specced desktop which would of course perform way better but then, phone apps aren't really filling the same niche anyway. Compare a RED Helium based Hollywood level camera to a pocket cam/phone. Similar idea, both have uses.

Also, music production on the iPad is a bit more than that. You have software that offers tons of tracks, a standard way to communicate between multiple virtual instruments, tons of effects, some admittedly limited routing, a bunch of really cool instruments which operate close to realtime, and support for high quality recording via high quality audio interfaces. Not bad for any device (in some ways it's arguably more natural than desktop) and a bit more than what you can do on a PSP.
