Because... today's cords haven't been around for seven years so you can't exactly compare them? Just buy a good quality cable and take care of it, it'll last.

Ok, gonna flip that around. Apparently cords of 7 years ago will expose their insides while none of my 'modern' cords have done so.

So what's truly better?
