My router is behind my bed so I have an Ethernet cable running through the house from my computer. When I'm drunk I can just follow the cable to bed. it works out pretty well.5

Not my mom, but my wife's whole family. I'm a software developer.
So we're invited to her grandmother's 85th birthday celebration with pretty much every family member they could think to invite. 100+ people, and we all sit down in a circle in a huge room to watch a video that my wife's father and aunts/uncles put together.
They start the video and there's no sound. I'm a software developer, so I'm not an expert in hardware issues. I try to turn invisible, because every tech person knows what comes next, and this is in the center of a room of people I don't know.
After about 15 minutes of people struggling to get the audio working, one of the people remembers I "work with computer". Soon I have a dozen people calling me to the center of the room.
I begrudgingly make my way to the computer and projector. Upon inspection, I find that the computer is connected via VGA to the projector.
Me: "This cable only carries video. You need a different kind of cable, or you can hook up an AUX cable--the kind you use for headphones."
Other Guy: "I used this cable earlier and the audio was working."
Me: "...that's weird. Well, can we try plugging in an AUX cable?"
Yet Another Guy: "Will this help?" Holds up an HDMI cable
Me: "Oh, yeah! That should do it."
Other Guy: "I tried plugging that in, but it didn't change anything."
Me: "Hmmm..." Quickly unplug VGA and plug in HDMI, then click play.
The sound comes out in its full cheesy music glory. Everybody cheers, and I walk back to my seat. Throughout the rest of party, I'm approached by various other family members who ask me if I can fix X since I'm a "computer guy". Isn't it great to work in tech?12 -
Went to a shop to buy bubble plastic envelopes (gotta send something carefully).
Walked out with a new Bluetooth music headset, couple of charging cables, Ethernet cable and a music input splitter and also those envelopes.

My girlfriend lost her hair band at my house. Today I found it and finally solved the problem of tangled cables!

We moved to a new office floor and got a brand new set up. My new extension monitor died just after 4 hours of use, it was showing a black screen a with couple of colourful lines running down the screen.
Got the IT guy to come and replace it. He says he must test it with a display cable even though the screen was dead without any input source. (Ok fine cbf arguing with you, just do it.)

Realising I was right, he gave the ok for another guy to replace my monitor.
Second guy comes to my desk and realised he forgot the electric screwdriver. (Sigh, how long must I wait...) After he finally finished installing the new monitor he plugged the display cable into a random display port without looking.

Since the monitor wasn't displaying anything, he jumped into asking me to restart my computer. I gave him "the wtf are you stupid face" and just said "NO". I looked over to where he plugged the cable and asked why he plugged into the "dp out" port.
I plugged the cable to the correct port and monitor was working.
Felt like I can do their job better without any experience in IT support.
PS. Don't play the "please restart your computer" card on me. I also work in technology.2 -

University dorm admin story:
One guy had a problem with his ethernet cable. He broke RJ45 and wanted new one, so he asked on dorms group what to do. He was pointed to admin. So he grabbed a knife, cut the cable as close to wall as he could and walked with it to the admin guy. He said that he had problem with his cable and want new RJ45, so admin applied it on the both sides. Then he asked how to plug it back to the wall :D19 -

Until suddenly... the Internet was gone. Like completely gone.
Out of nowhere the head of network administration appears right beside me, yelling completely over-pitched straight into my ear "WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ALL SERVICES ARE OFFLINE? WTF HAPPENED TO THE CONNECTION?..."
He disappeared as fast as he had arrived. With my ears still bleeding I got myself a cappuccino.
Several hours later the Internet was back. At the construction site infront of the headquarter the Internet cable was cut.
Wait. What about a second backup cable? It exists. Unfortunately both cables split only after the construction site.

A roommate said he didnt have internet on his laptop. Wifi wasnt working for him and the cable doesnt fit because he has a new ethernet port and needs another cable for that.
I told him that there is no new ethernet port or new ethernet port standard, I would have heard about it.
But he insisted that it was true.
So I grabbed the ethernet cable, pulled the clamp on his ethernet port down (as most new laptops now have) and plugged the cable in.3 -
1. Buy a connected armwrist that tells you the time, how good your sleep is, your heartbeat and stuff like that
2. Manage to loose the cable that charges the device
3. Get mad
4. Finally decide to buy a new one after digging in your 50 m^2 flat in vain
5. Your stuff is coming in 12 years, I mean days. Have a lot of advertisement of this particular cable wherever you go for the next two weeks
6. The thing finally gets delivered. Let's not be stupid like before and put it in a logical place, like permanently plugged in the usb port above my computer tower.

- Prologue
I'm renting at a place that looks good af. But the fking wifi is so slow, 80% of the time you can't even send an empty http request.
- Chapter 1
Okay, maybe it's my laptop. *plugs in cable*. Now the requests fail 10% of the time. Better than nothing. 2 hours later, gets a text saying other housemates are having slow internet because of me. FUCK. Unplugs, LAN cable, uses mobile data and cries to sleep.
- Chapter 2
Tries again after a few days. Barely uses the internet (I'm only using it to play games, not even download it and I used more than this with a 2mbps internet). No videos, no music, just small data exchange with a low ping. GETS A FKING TEXT AGAIN
- CHAPTER 3
My sis comes over and complains that the net is slow af. Plugs in LAN cable while no one is around, everything is fine. Sis leaves, I roll up my end of the LAN cable in my room but leave the cable plugged in on the outside of the room. Next morning, it's unplugged. Plugged it back in before I go to work and when I come back, guess what? ITS FKING UNPLUGGED. AGAIN. AND IM NOT EVEN USING IT.

I am fucked.... 😫😫😫My new custom build pc is not starting up after lighting strike 😭😭 ... I had unplugged all the plugs from the socket but i forgot to unplug the wifi from the broadband cable.... So when lighting hit my building the current came through broadband cable and burned my wifi then through there it got to my pc... My motherboard, gtx1070 graphic card, ram everything is gone.... Except my hard drive and psu...

I come back and my colleague has my charger, the converstaion goes as follows.

My cable company imposed a data cap on us, then offered an unlimited plan for 50/month. So total would be 150/month for only internet. Unfortunately, they are the only provider.
Until now. I got on the phone with their competition for around 3 hours today and talked them into rolling out to our neighborhood. As of Tuesday, we actually have competition. It feels so good to screw over the cable company like this, especially after how they approached data caps.5 -
Am I the only one who hates cable management like this with zip ties? When one cable needs to be replaced you have to cut a bunch of zip ties and re-zip tie everything! Use Velcro!!!!!!

Tripped over the LAN cable in my corridor, almost fell. Went to bed only to notice that I left my phone on my desk. Phone is my alarm clock atm, so stood up to get it. Went well until tripping over that damn cable again. Stubbed my toe hard on the bedframe, still cursing now.

That moment when you overamplifiy your speaker, the speaker can't handle it, and the negative side of the aux port gets way too much energy delivered.

Spent an hour trying to figure out what was wrong in my socket disconnect detection code because it was constantly reporting disconnects when it shouldn't have... Only to find it was a pinched cable causing the problem. Meaning it actually did work the entire time.1

Working on my Lenovo x1 carbon. Akku warning "less then 6%" appears. No problem, I will connect the cable just after I finished this function... "Will shutdown in a view moments" message appears. Ok, I connect the cable. Nothing happens. Maybe power adapter is broken or something more worst. Panic. So at the end of February, my 8 year marriage met it's catastrophic end and I had to immediately relocate, with nada, to a state I've never before set foot in. I was hoping to find an entry level tech position, as I am largely self taught and don't have any certs. So far nothing. I spent 7 years as a cable tech, have to wait another few months to apply at the cable company, but everywhere else tells me I'm overqualified, or need certs/experience in the field. It's a bit discouraging. That's it. Rant over.4

I hate vodafone with all my heart..
Somehow our internet connection is being "disrupted" every night at 2:30 for one hour. Also occasionally during the day. They seem to be having "technical difficulties" with their cable connection, WHICH IS LITERALLY THE ONLY JOB THAT WE PAY THEM FOR...11 -

Yesterday I spend around half an hour 'debugging' why a screen wasn't working. Checking cable connection, drivers and so on. Then the system admin pointed out that the extension power cable box was turned off... In my defence, I only slept for 4 hours that night..2

When you live in Rural America and both the cable and DSL suck... you buy both and combine them. Went from speedtesting at 11.5mbps/2mbps to 18mbps/3.5mbps. Also have a nice VPN setup for when I'm out and want privacy on public wifi. Winning!

Today I was at the store because I needed a Usb C cable. I grabed one of the shelf that was 40€. It wasn't even particularly fancy, it was just 1,5 m long and not very special. I asked an employee if they had a cheaper option and he recommended me that I should buy a micro Usb cable instead. Yeah, it would be cheaper you idiot, but it would also be USELESS!!!6

Fuck me sideways. I work for a small business doing most of their IT work, a lot of which is in-house software development. Today I was working on a feature of our employee schedule system that I wrote and for the last couple of hours, my laptop (which is my dev machine) kept freezing up on me every ten minutes or so... 😬
Well, I finally found the cause, but only after running apt-get update/upgrade to see if updating fixed the issue. I haven't updated in a LONG time... Productivity is not on the agenda for today I suppose.

So my school's wifi doesn't support my TV or something, all I know is the wifi doesn't appear as a potential connection for the TV. (Even then, when I plugged the TV into the Ethernet cable, it still gave me an error message.) Well I figured out a loophole Saturday night.
I plug the Ethernet cable into my laptop. Then activate the hotspot on my laptop. Connect to the TV through the laptop's connection. Problem solved.
Loopholes are one of the best parts of life.1 -

I have a friend that keeps his phone on "Battery saver" all the time... It's painful to always see that notification with "your phone is on battery saver mode".

And before when I was switching cables behind the computer below desk I was just blindly feeling around, it didn't even occurr to me to actually check what connectors are used..just knew both monitors had the same connector (and not aure why I thought HDMI :/)...so yeah, I'm the idiot who is not paying attention to stuff.. My Beats In-ear earphones just died, after 3 years of pretty frequent use. The cable is broken and one side is dead and the other side is flickering. Now I am looking for a replacement. And I hope that someone here can suggest me something that fits my needs :s
First question would be wireless or cable. I am not to sure yet, I think I'd prefer cable because I don"t need to charge them and the possibility of loosing them is not as big. However I am open to wireless earphones as well, since they are pretty good to listen to music during workout.
I want my earphones to have deep bass and clear highs.
One of the most important aspects is durability. If its a cable earphone, I would prefer something with strong durable cables, nothing flimsy that breaks again in a short time.
Oh yeah and the price shouldn"t break the bank, I am thinking about something <100 euros.

So I get to work this morning and find one of my monitors has been moved and my HDMI cable and Display Port adapter are missing...
I've since found the cable, it had made its way onto another desk. When I asked if anyone had seen anything one of the guys said he found an HDMI that's not his on his desk. Still no sign of my adapter though...
So for now I'm back to one monitor like some kind of peasant1 -
I got told I lift my mouse a lot and I noticed, I actually do, does anybody else here lift the mouse to reset to the center of the mousepad, to a more neutral position or to just soften the drag from the cable often?10

So I started to hear a noise on my headphones which I didn't know where it was coming from. It wasn't much of a noise but a regular sequence of "beeps", seemed like 8bit sfx. So I started moving my cable around and it turns out that if I put the headphone's cable under my phone at a specific spot I can hear the noise. Seems like some kind of interference, so the first thing that I thought of is the NFC sensor. So I remembered that an app would detect my credit card (which has NFC) if it was close to the back of my phone, so I put on my headphones and put the cable between the phone and the credit card and voila, the sound changes. It only works if the headphones are be plugged in though.
Idk why but it think this is really cool. Just wanted to share :)2 -

So my day started well.
I come in an the DVR monitor is not working, ok lets turn it off and on, nope. Lets turn the DVR on and off, nope still nothing. Played around with the VGA cable, nope. I cant replace the cable because its hard wired into the monitor....
I grab the spare screen next to me and connect it all up and it works!
Boss tells me to throw "broken" monitor out, I say I want to test it just to make sure, connect it all up to my pc and now it fucking works!

today, within moments, quickly scrolling on eBay i found 2, new to me... which is quite rare, perplexing 'wtf's.
1. a laptop clearly stating, multiple times, reiterated, not copy\paste... that not only was it lacking a hard drive... but "no hard drive cable"...
my mind briefly tried to figure that one out
... even considered searching yheir several other lots to see if they typically included the "hard drive cable" or if they were often denying customers of this clearly standard component.

Spend 2 hours migrating my old NASs ubuntu zfs pool to the new freeBSD NAS, which has new fancy stuff like a crossflashed raid card new hyper efficient psu and so on. Sadly, the pool just wont import, many drives are missing. I debug. For hours. Trying to test cables. Interesting. No matter which SATA cables i switch, this one drive always starts... Hm... Must be the controller then. Maybe the controller doesnt spin up the other disks, because i removed the boot rom! That must be it! Wait... Why is this cable lying in here... Wait, this is the power cable attached to all missing driv ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! I WASTED SO MUCH FUCKING TIME ON THIS SHIT HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!
Unfortunately, one power cable become loose (i dont know how, these cables have plastic thingies to prevent this...), but it works now. And its better than before. -

I feel accomplished. After arguing with my family for a month or so, I finally solved the WiFi issues in my room! (We live in a flat. And the thick, concrete walls eat the signal super well)
I used to have 2 MBs downstream at most, with very common disconnects and general connection issues.
Now, just yesterday, I laid about 50 meters of ethernet cable all the way from my room to the other end of our house. Laid the cable along the top of our walls so that mom did not have to constantly whine how bad it looks.
Biggest issues were doors (Parents refuse to drill into the walls here, they tend to crumble a lot), but ended up running it under the door just tightly enough that the doors don't squeeze it in any way.
It works great! The cable is almost invisible, and now, my downstream is 30 MBps!
The only downside is that I used an old wifi router in my room that supports only 802.11b/g/n, not ac.2 -
Hardwares guys help a dumb dev out. Got my work station finally set up at home. This cord is attached my Dell Thunderbolt docking station.
If I lightly bump the cable the laptop or the desk I loose connectivity to my displays.
What can I replace this fucker with?

I found out why my local server kept going offline.
Due to living constraints, it has to be connected to the network via wifi. The cable connecting the wifi card to the computer appears not to work when bent in a specific direction...

For the past 5 hours I’ve been backing up my pc, reinstalling windows(full wipe of every drive) and, reinstalling programs to my fucking pc. I can now say I’ve been to hell and back, because fuck everything, now I need to rebuild it because 2 years ago “oh cable management is optional I don’t need to do that.” So fml. And especially fuck apple and windows. Fucking windows with having to reinstall once a year and Apple with overpriced bullshit lightning to 3.5 adapters, $10 for one because they removed 3.5 jacks. @linuxxx I understand why Linux is a good alternative although it sucks for gaming due to no support( I know about wine but I don’t want to use it due to it having problems half the time)5

The cord gets caught in the chair when standing up, the cord gets twisted so you can't hear anything, not all devices have headphone jack anymore.

It's hard to really appreciate how set and forget Linux distro's actually are, I have no internet at the moment and have to use a USB wi-fi dongle, windows rerquires I install a driver yet and so does a USB-C cable (Don't ask why a fucking cable needs a driver to transmit power but hey), I connect both up to my Linux install (Elementary OS) and boom, straight out the box they both work perfectly .-.6 -

Has anyone else found that not all USB C inputs are the same? You can't just buy an cable and expect it to plug into any socket.
1. I replaced the cable for a power pack, but the new one didn't fit my OP6 socket well, no clicking and have to push it in very hard to get it to charge, and still eat to fall out
2. The pixel 2 cable fits it nicely and all cables are ready to plugin and work
3. I tried charging my new Pixel 4a with ur though but very hard to plug in. Had to install the charger and cable that came with.
4. Amazon Fire takes all of them nicely and send all the others can use the cable that came with it too8 -

My unidirectional type-c cable. Essentially is a Type C to Type A-female adapter with a Type A to Type C cable plugged in, but with the plugs bypassed with a soldered joint.
Useful for devices that have Type C but refuse to implement protocols, just using 5v bus. They only work with Type A to Type C cables. Usually, they’re vapes and other low-cost devices.
I made this cable to charge my heated tobacco device. Now, since I quit smoking, I don’t need it anymore, but I’ll keep it nonetheless because it’s kinda neat.

Finally, my height-adjustable desk frame arrived! I even ordered from a vendor who ships from my country and not from the other end of the world to have it in a week and not in 12 months.
But alas, the vendor sent me two left legs, with the result of the cable being too short to set it up with my desk board. :(
So either I send the whole thing back to the vendor or I find an extension cable, luckily it uses molex connectors and not some crude proprietary plug type.

So it's basically impossible to install Arch Linux on a MacBook without an Ethernet cable.

Is it hard to write a kernel module to expose information to usee space ? I need smartctls abilitytl to specify sata being transported over. USB cable to a sata drive to pull Information like make model serial but it requires root and lsblk doesn't have the functionality to grab info on the device on the other end of the usb to sata cable

Office manager just mandated that our standing desks would have a "cable pouch" installed at the rear for cable management. My cable tray **was** the neatest of everyone in dev, now it's unscrewed on the floor and all my cables plus the laptop charger are hanging loose, because notmyjob.jpg and contractors generally DGAF.
Oh, and they didn't install it flush with the rear of the desk, presumably because they didn't want to take off my laptop stand. So it's right in the way of my feet when I'm sitting.
Nothing that I can't fix with a screwdriver in my own time, fortunately. -

This is my iphone charger. I have to charge my phone 32 hours per day because the battery is dogshit.
U can see how fucked it is from charging so much. The cable itself ripped apart and u can see the wires inside but no wires are sticking out.
I get ZAPPED when i touch anything in my environment. Anything i touch electrocutes me. Like im the fucking Zeus.
Could this cable be the reason?

This is the weirdest thing that have happened to me related to computers... When I connect an ethernet cable to my computer and I use the iex command (Interactive Elixir or elixir console, whatever) on my terminal it takes about 6 seconds to load but when I disconnect the cable and use iex again it starts instantly, like, what the fuck. This happens with any Elixir command. I've had this problem for several days and honestly I didn't know why it was taking so long to load.4

Why are controllers awful, it seems like I have to custom each different controller manually to the game. Why can't the the A button on one controller be A on all controllers.
Why can't there be a universal built in controller script that would convert all of the different types controller inputs into a generic controller input that can be translated by just one script instead of writing a script for every common controller... 😠3
