Random poll:

If you have pets, do you own a cat or a dog?

A colleague has a personal statistic that says most developers have cats rather than dogs.
Just checking her data!

    Cat owner here

None, but her data kinda makes sense. Most devs are introverts and most introverts own cats.
  • 1
@NoMad That is simply not true. Prove me wrong if you have data
  • 2
@yehaaw which part not true? Intrv owning cat or devs being Intrv?
  • 2
@NoMad That majority introverts own cats

Had two cats and a dog but lost one cat at 15 about two years ago and dog at 16 about six weeks ago.

Now just the one cat now, almost 19.

@yehaaw afaik there's no concrete study done tho. No peer review, etc.

However, wouldn't it make sense that people who want to stay at home and not interact with strangers don't have to walk their pets? Common sense, man. 😛

@NoMad "Gosling found that dog people were generally about 15 percent more extroverted, on average, than cat people."

    So, yeah..
  • 1
@NoMad Most of my friends who are introverts own a dog and I, for example, own 2 dogs, so my experience is quite different.
  • 2
@yehaaw that's absolutely fine. However, you don't make a population. You could easily be an outlier. Or, it could be your culture at work. Afaik, in some culture extroverts don't even own pets. You know, big city, so much to do, etc etc.

Now that's a study I want to read; Do extroverts in megacities own pets? 🤔
  • 0
@NoMad By the way, desire to stay mostly at home is not a trait of being an introvert.
  • 3
@yehaaw a) there are different kind of introversion. b) that is literally a sign of being an introvert. They enjoy staying in their own zone "more than" extroverts. Doesn't mean they all like to be locked down. c) such personality traits change during life.

Idk why you're trying to keep find a loophole. A social rule doesn't mean 100%, it barely covers 90%.

I think I like dogs more. Cats are fine, it's just that when we got one she almost never wanted to interact with me :/. Now she lives with my brother.

    I want a pug lol

None :( but would love to have 2 cats and a dog someday..
  • 0
    Both

one asshole cat who really likes tuna. But only in salted water - he can't stand the oil version. Asshole.
  • 2
Dog person here. A team member w/ 2 cats, and a team member with a dog. Side question, do kids count as pets? Asking for a friend...
  • 3
@NoMad I have another theory: Devs like getting into fucking arguments and when proven wrong will most likely argue to find a loophole on shit.

Because being petty is associated with being a dev.

    Source: dude...trust me.

I don't have pets, but if I did I would have dogs.

I would prefer cats, but I’m allergic.

    Girlfriend loves birds.
I prefer lizards. They’re so cute and lazy and adorable! And quiet!

@Root like hairless cats? .....aaannnnnd banned

Cat, she can be soft and cute sometime, but otherwise she is annoying
  • 1
Cat, you have to walk dogs. Doesn’t fit into the lifestyle very well

    So far:
    10 cats, 12 dogs, 4 both.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, counter argument: your sample (on dR, a very public and open social network) are mostly extroverts. So, I'd say this platform is not a real representation of the dev population.

Currently 1 "cat", although it's not what others would consider a cat. It's a cute, viscous, lovely, bat-catching, mud-loving, burrowing, gently biting European wildcat.

Have owned/cared for many felines, including two caracals, a serval and a cheetah.

    @bittersweet Tell us the stories!!!!

@NoMad Not that much to tell. Had a job for a bit babysitting for rich people, among which the two kids and cheetah of a Microsoft exec (where I worked as a junior developer/translator).

The cheetah was eventually moved to a wildlife shelter (she was not mistreated, but it's illegal here to own them without a license), where I got to visit regularly as I knew her quirks and she responded very well to me.

Cheetahs are actually quite friendly, not domesticated but easy enough to manage and care for if they have enough space and are kept on a proper diet. I don't think people SHOULD own them -- but they aren't particularly dangerous, even around kids, if the conditions are good.

That shelter called me 6 years ago to adopt my current buddy, as they ran out of budget/space and had to put her down in favor of more threatened species. So I got a license to own a Felix Silvestris now. 🤷‍♂

@NoMad The other cats were just on loan for a while, as they got impounded from people I received them in "foster care" while the people from the shelter looked for a more suitable, permanent place. The Caracals were amazing animals, but they did completely wreck my house -- they love to shred fabric and wood at about 100x the rate of a normal house cat.

@bittersweet amazeballs 😍😍 I don't want to own any, but I do find it fascinating when they can interact and find people non-threatening.

    I have a cat and a dog.

    No pets :P

Taken care many stray cats + their kids so about 30 in total have passed through my house over the last decade. Got another 3 newly born kittens in a box in my house right now.

I don't have pets but if I'd get one it'd be a cat.

Two cats. Don't really wanna make time to walk the doggo

    @rutee07 thats... disturbing.

One cat in a box :)

@Root Birds are sooo friendly, I love them! Never had a lizard though, maybe one day :)

Love that some people started posting pics of their pets! Here's Matilda :)

Dog, but I’m more of a cat person
  • 0
@Chea mythbuster for ya. It's not the hair that causes allergic reaction. There are no hypoallergenic cats. It's just a sad selling technique.

@NoMad here there are more cats than dogs in general (although most people are dog persons) mostly because cats are more practical (in this culture) and take less care.
That will fuck up any study.

Though I don't have one, I like dogs

Cats because we are at work the whole day and can't walk a dog thrice a day/give it enough attention. I guess a dog will come in the picture when I retire at 70 lol
