IIRC there was an experiment where folks took ram out of a PC, froze it, and somehow was able to pull out data from it.

luxe0115654yI mean the burnt down computer may be realistic. Silicon which is used in computer circuits is very tolerant to heat. Also after burning the computer it would be more likely that the contaminants that enter the case would damage the drives.
-
@luxe011 yeah, but why plug the power cord (along with other ones) in before removing the PCI components... :D

Tonnoman6224yRemind me of a movie that I didn't seem but just in the premiere already they used hard disk and server interchangeably. Love it.

stop68024y@N00bPancakes that is not an experiment, thats an attacksource. but the froze it before taking it out. to be sure that the data is still there.

@stop AFAIK analysing DIMMs after poweroff is a RE technique. I came across several articles explaining that - back in the day when I was curious about Intel's ME; they used this technique to RE parts of the ME logic.
I don't recall them mentioning anything about freezing... I do recall them mentioning that DIMMs hold charge for a short time after poweroff and restoring the current should preserve the data in there for further analysis.
Don't have those refs atm

DRSDavidSoft28Found this in our codebase, apparently one of my co-workers had written this
Watching a piece (a Belgian TV series) about hackers
- Police IT dpt takes a burned down computer (literally burned down -- black from the smoke), plug it into the mains and remove a graphics card. To collect evidence from.
- A policeman from IT dpt is browsing some company's website (while at the police station), looking at their clients. Address bar says: 127.0.0.1.
- The police hacker is browsing some forum. She got the post author's IP and MAC addresses from that forum post metainfo.
