My company relocated us to the UAE. They said all hotel expenses till we get our apartments will be on them. In addition, they will be giving us a 4k relocation bonus to furnish our apartments.

After the first batch was relocated they were like, ok so we will be deducting all expenses / hotel fees from your relocation bonus. You will also not get the salaries until we get residencies and are able to open bank accounts.

Sounds like they moved you to a place where they control you ...

That's not an uncommon story when it comes to moving folks to those kind of countries.

That would be a funny story if it wasn't so horrifyingly dystopian.

In UAE unfortunately employees never say a word against abusive practices of employers. Either you do something (e.g. say loud and clear that you demand what was agreed earlier) or get your passport and leave.

Waiting for things to get better on its own NEVER WORKED.

If you won't do anything, next thing you'll see can be working 12h a day without extra pay or delayed salaries... and so on.

As soon as it said UAE I knew someone was getting fucked over.

I was offered to move to Dubai, fully paid bonuses etc etc

    Told them to stick it.

    @sleek anything new happened?

@heyheni the co-founder removed the post and psted saying we are all being ungrateful. They worked so hard on moving all 50 of us. a feat never done before. (their words). our complaints are considered toxic. we should be greatful for the opportunity that they believe very few would offer us. They pulled a lot of strings to get u there (we are lebanese and UAE has some restictions on us lately). Our toxicness will not be tolerated anymore.

yeah basically we are all pissed but have no other options because we are desperate to leave the country

@sleek what would happen to them if all 50 of you left?
  • 2
@electrineer they would not survive. Guess thats why they are mass hiring now

@sleek but you still got your passport on you do you right? And you could leave the UAE anytime?

I would advise to get remote side job on freelance sites like upwork, toptal, freelancr. To keep you afloat and if it musst be to flee.
Dubai is known to be build on modern day slavery and Indentured servitude.

As a lebanese do you speak french?
If so Quebec the French speaking part of Canada or the French overseas departments like French Guyana, La Réunion, New Caledonia could be places you could maybe start searching for a job.

@seraphimsystems what was your main reason to reject it?

Sounds like someone actually sat down, did the math, and realized they fucked up, and now they are back peddling.

@bzq84 horror stories of having your passport confiscated and essentially disappearing into slavery
