It's so much more effective to simply refuse any kind of support for Windows. Let them learn hating Windows on their own.

Wait until they want to play an AAA game. I honestly don't see today's situation in this regard changing much in the following 10-15 years.

I am a dad, gor linux on my work laptop, linux in my small home server, wife has a mac, and gaming PC has windows.

I can't tell anyone to hate anything except iPhones.

Btw, windows 10 is all right, except you can't control their fucking restarts, it keeps rebooting at some point of the day and stopping my fucking miners.
I had an epiphany yesterday, dual boot and put the miners in sn OS that actually listens to what I want to do.

There are legitimate reasons to hate windows, but to do it just because it's cool is kind of cringe.

A lot of kids like things their parents hate out of spite. Best thing to do is when asked about windows is shrug your shoulders and seem bored/uninterested.

I don’t teach hatred, just truth.

Linux is a tool you need to study and learn; it’s hard work, but it does what you tell it to, and only that. You can also customize it in any way you desire. You own and administrate the device, and take responsibility for how it works and what it does.

Windows and Mac lock you into set ways of thinking, do what they want, and give you significantly less control. Mac much moreso. Windows does many things you do not want, and you cannot stop it from doing them. Part of why Windows is cheap is because of data mining, for example.

The risks are different, too: on Windows, you risk data loss and spreading infections from viruses. With macs, you risk these less, but expensive repairs too. On Linux, you risk unsupported hardware, or breaking your system and needing to reinstall.

Linux is free in many senses of the word. Neither Windows nor Mac are in any sense of the word.

This is what I teach my children.
No evangelizing, no absolutes; just simple demonstrations and explanations in words they can understand and relate to.

@Root OTOH, if you just want to use Linux, you don't even have to learn it. You just need someone to set it up, but that's the same for Windows and macOS where the vendors usually have done that for you when you buy the device. In case of Windows, often with additional crapware that you'll neither need nor want.

Also, breaking the system is a solved concern - you just play back the system config via Timeshift (all application packages included of course), without need to reinstall.

The one system where reinstallation is common, that's Windows. It's the second most frequent tip that you get in Microsoft's forums - after "did you try to switch it off and on again".
