Manager: You use linux? Why?? I’ve only ever used windows and it’s the best of all the computers in my experience. It contains everything anyone needs: email, meetings and the internet.

    Well, they are not wrong

    1. Their requirements are met by Windows
    2. They don't need anything else or want anything else. So, the Human Mind automatically concludes it is the best

I agree with what @asgs says.

I only use Chrome on my Windows these days.

And even in Chrome, I literally use 6 apps
Outlook, Slack, Zoom, Confluence, Jira, and Figma (read only).

While for first 3 I have apps installed but if needed, I can run my entire day to day business via Chrome.

However, I don't conclude Windows as best OS for everyone but for me.

But yes, projecting something that I find best onto others is just being an asshole.

Personally, I prefer Windows for everyday work / pleasure. (I don’t even know if you can play 4K HDR (or even harder “ Dolby Vision) video from Linux on a compatible TV. Windows does it without even thinking about it. Fuck it even simulates HDR for every video.

But now I choose OS based on how easy it’s to achive what I want.

Here is an example : I always worked with MS SQL servers. From like 15 years ago to now. So I don’t want to learn MySQL.

The catch : Have you ever tried to Install MS SQL on windows ? it’s a fucking nightmare !!!

On linux ? 1 command line,. 5 multiple choice questions and you are up and running.

So now my Dev serveur for SQL is on linux.

Simple because it’s so fucking easyu to manage compared to the same SQL server on windows.

A bit ironic if you think, MS SQL is easier to use on less user friendly system.

They’re not wrong: it really is the best in their experience — they haven’t used anything else.

Also, as a nontechnical manager they really won’t need anything else. A locked-down chromebook would be good enough for them. And if there was ever a PDA with video chat capability, that would also be enough.

It does have all they need, though most are just web browser things and can be used anywhere

@abdilahrf I’ll just change my desktop image. That’ll be enough to convince him

A computer is a tool. Some people are artisans and need advance featured from their tool, while others get by with a cheap one.

Just like a craftsmen vs a home owner, a handle on a wood plane not being varnished is important for feel for a craftsmen, but a homeowner would just hit it with a grinder using a flap disc...

    Which tool is better?

This is why we need managers who are good engineers first.

to all these comments supporting the “i love windows” idea… i’d like to state, this IS DEVrants right? not “manager” rants?

@fullstackchris Without managers there’d be nothing to be sad about
